5-minute meditation exercise for beginners! Sounds and breath – Flow

Mindfulness meditation can help prevent depressive episodes, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’re new to meditation practice, this exercise is a good way to start. Focusing on one of your senses will help you come in contact with the present moment and, at the same time, practice your ability to control your attention. Flow Neuroscience offers step-by-step instructions for how to practice mindfulness from the beginning. Make sure to check out the complete treatment programme for depression, including a meditation module with daily exercises.

According to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Flow Neuroscience offers a new kind of treatment for this disabling condition. The company uses brain stimulation and behaviour therapy to treat depression at home; no talking or medication needed.

Brain stimulation is delivered through a wireless headset, controlled by the app Flow – Depression. This certified medical device is the first of its kind in Europe and now available for home use. In addition, the app includes a complete treatment programme with focus on lifestyle changes that significantly reduce symptoms of depression. The Flow treatment programme is suitable for people over 18 years of age who have been diagnosed with depression (major depressive disorder).

In this channel, you’ll find some of the original video content from the Flow treatment programme. If you like it, download the full programme for free on iOS at:

This meditation is called sounds and breath.
You can do this sitting or lying down, and I suggest you close your eyes. The purpose
of this meditation is to pay attention to what’s happening right now, whatever that is. Sometimes you will lose focus and get distracted by thoughts. That’s just how the human mind
works. When this happens, try to notice which thought caught your attention, and then kindly
redirect your attention to the present moment. Start by noticing your ears where they are
placed and how they feel on the side of your head. Now, pay attention to all kinds of sounds
around you, high-pitched sounds and low-pitched sounds that come and disappear moment by moment. Try to pay attention to the sensory qualities of the sounds: are they high-
or low-pitched, short or long, instead of judging if they’re good or bad. Are there any sounds in front of you? Behind you? Are there sounds far away from
you? Can you detect the sound closest to you? Now, direct your focus to your nose. What sensations can you experience in your nose at this moment? Can you feel the
air travelling through your nostrils? Let your attention travel with the air down to your
lungs. Notice how it feels to breathe right now. Pay attention to which parts of your body are
moving when you breathe in and breathe out. Try not to control your breath;
just let it happen automatically. Notice if you feel differently at this moment
to before you started with the meditation. When you feel ready, open your eyes,
and slowly return to your session.

  1. Weird ending. Why did you add that

  2. This is a great meditation, but the background sound makes it hard to notice other sounds! It would be great to hold off on the music during the mindfulness of sounds

  3. The return to your smartphone comment seemed to negate the whole purpose.

  4. I was so zoned in i didnt even relize i was in a ad 😅

  5. really good, the accent aswell helps to relax

  6. I don't have a smartphone, but…

Thanks I had a dream that kinda traumatized me and I couldn't get over it. I was just brainwashed and I could just watch as someone went around killing my pet animals. Now you helped me to know it was not real, I still have all my pets, and brainwashing isn't possible. I was crying for like 10 minutes in a panic attack and my mom had to comfort me through everything and told me to listen to this.

  7. “return to your smartphone” 😂 I like the humorous end😂😂

  8. I wish there were another 10-15 seconds after opening the eyes were was silent and just somr gentle sounds.
Not guiding you to your smartphone straigtaway especially after encourging us to be present

  9. I m sorry but not nice… And the amazing "return to your smartphone" instantly followed by an advertisement….

  10. Why on earth would you end this very nice meditation with 'return to your smartphone'? That just brought me right back to a feeling of stress! I would edit that out.

  11. Not on a smartphone, but thanks anyway. This was good.

  12. Wonderful and helpful, thank you

  13. This was super nice, I love it.
