Infrared Saunas: Boost Your Mood, Metabolism, & Vascular Function | Digging In with Dr. Kellyann

In this week’s episode of Digging In, I explore the world of saunas — infrared saunas to be exact! Originating from Finland, traditional saunas have been used for centuries for their extensive medicinal purposes. But in 1965, the first infrared sauna was born in Japan and they’ve been taking over the wellness scene ever since. Infrared saunas have been linked to improving heart health, vascular function, metabolism, mood, and more! With their unique infrared lighting, these saunas are able to penetrate the skin & affect your body on a cellular level. Be sure to tune into this week’s episode as I experience infrared saunas for myself at Restore Hyper Wellness in New York City. Do I dig them, or do I ditch them? Watch to find out!

– Bet you're wondering what I'm doing on this next episode of Digging
In with Doctor Kellyann. (upbeat music) – Dr. Kellyann, I'm Taylor. – Very nice to meet you. Hi Taylor. – Nice to meet you. – Excited to be here. You're gonna make me beautiful? You're gonna give me energy? You're gonna make me healthier? – Yeah, of course. – Okay, now we're talking. – Awesome. (upbeat music) Okay, so come on in this room over here. – Okay. – Is our infrared sauna. There is a timer right up there. The temperature is right below it. You can change the
lighting, however you want. You can get comfortable
in a robe right there or a wrap right there. You have the entire room to yourself. Just sit back and relax. – All I need is a glass of wine. Bone broth really? Bye bye. (upbeat music) – Okay, so I'm ready to sauna. And when I say the word sauna, most people are going
to think traditionally. Traditional saunas that
are heated to about 150 to 195 degrees where
the heat is around us. But today we're going to talk about something a little
different, infrared saunas. So the big differences here are, number one, is the temperature. The temperature gets to about
120 to about 130 degrees so a lot less than
traditional and the heat heats you directly, affects you directly. So how does infrared saunas actually work? They release electromagnetic radiation, which penetrates into your skin. And when this happens, it
goes into your blood cells, creating vibration and this vibration is actually really healthy for the body. So now your body temperature has risen. And that means that your
blood flow is changing. It's becoming more rapid,
which releases more oxygen and all kinds of good things happen. And so what's really
important and interesting is once this `happens, your
blood pressure decreases. So when your blood pressure decreases, this means that your body shifts from a sympathetic nervous system to a parasympathetic nervous system. Think about parasympathetic
like wine and dine. It puts you in a really relaxed stage, which eases everything in your body, including your digestion,
your rapid mind that you have. It relaxes all of that,
relaxes your muscles, which is really good for overall health. Okay, let's go. I can't wait to try this. (upbeat music) Well, I will tell you for me, the biggest benefit amongst
all of the benefits here for me is complete relaxation. Because if you're like me,
your mind is always going. Your body's always going and
it's really hard to shut down. So you instantly feel in
here this sense of serenity and your mind just
really takes a dip down. And so I think this is probably very good for your mental health
and really for your mood. For people that are feeling anxious a lot, this would be a great option. (upbeat music) Now, there are some risks
that these infrared saunas can lower your blood pressure too much. So when I first came out
of the infrared sauna, I felt a little bit lightheaded. It was very enjoyable and I've loved it but when I came out a
little bit lightheaded because I'm naturally resting at a lower, lower blood pressure. Been like that my whole life. So just be really careful,
make sure you hydrate. Hydration helps a lot with that. Helps a lot, so keep yourself hydrated before and after. That's key. If you have any health issues at all that you're concerned about,
just get a doctor's approval for using infrared saunas. (soft music) Here's a really big, wow. I had no idea that infrared
saunas actually help you lower your risk for high cholesterol because they naturally increase your HDLs. Think about it like
you're happy cholesterol. That's the good guys you want more of. And they naturally lower your
LDLs, which are the bad guys. Men who used infrared
saunas in a study showed that they had a lower
risk for getting dementia, Actually 66% lower risk when
used on a regular basis. Using infrared saunas actually helps you with your production of collagen. So that gives you
healthier, more beautiful, more radiant skin. And here's what I know
you're going to love. Using infrared saunas, they
increase your body heat and when you do this,
this is thermogenesis, which means that that
increase in body temperature is helping you to burn fat
because your metabolism, it's a bump up. We're not talking about a
huge fat burning hit here, but you know what? Every little bit, they all add up. Okay, so I'm going to give
you the quick and dirty list of all the things, all the
benefits of infrared saunas. Infrared saunas support heart health. They help to lower blood pressure. They improve vascular function. They reduce oxidative stress, which by the way has so
much to do with how you age. They reduce pain. They improve arthritis symptoms. They improve depression,
mood, fatigue and performance. They improve insulin sensitivity, which is regulating your blood sugar, which is so helpful to help. And they help with your
fasting blood sugar. So again, getting your blood sugar really where you want it to be. (upbeat music) Okay, infrared saunas. Do I dig them or do I want to ditch them? Well, I actually dig them because there's documentation showing us that they can help increase
the collagen in your skin. I love that. Also increasing your metabolism to helping you burn some fat. And also I love the fact
that it's a mood enhancer, helping you feel relaxed and
more joyful throughout the day. When I'm sitting in the sauna and I feel like I'm sweating and
I'm releasing things. I feel like I'm getting rid of some toxins and I feel like I'm de
bloating and it feels great. But I have to say there
is no documentation pointing to that, but I'd like to think if you're sweating and
you're excreting like that, that you are getting rid of some toxins. If you have any medical
conditions whatsoever, or if you're pregnant, especially
in your first trimester, please consult your doctor
before using an infrared sauna. And I'll see you next time on
another episode of Digging In. (upbeat music)

  1. If you have any concerns, ask your doctor who knows absolutely nothing about nutrition or sauna use.

  2. What the fuck is happy cholesterol? This is why people don't trust the medical community. Because you talk to them with kids.

  3. Do the housecoats or towels play a part of stopping infra from entering your body

  4. I noticed a difference in my skin looking more firm the day after an infrared sauna. The sauna that I used was full spectrum. I’m wondering if the type of infrared wave lengths matters to collagen, production. I would love to purchase one, but full spectrum is so much more expensive than far infrared saunas. Don’t know if it’s really worth the extra money for the college and production.

  5. No documentation? Dr Kelley Ann, there is SO much documentation! IF sauna also strengthens mitochondria and oxygenates cells.

  6. Dr.? how long were you in the sauna? I don't think you mentioned that. Also, can people at any age use this kind of therapy? (yes, I am much, much older)

  7. I’m sitting in one at my massage therapist’s right now, LOL.

  8. Is the vasodilation from a sauna or hot tub caused indirectly by nitric oxide ?

  9. Hi. Thank you for the video. I'm curious why no one mentions the EMF risk.

  10. I love my radiant health enfared Sauna best addition to my health journey

  11. @0:55 no! No alcohol before or during a sauna. That’s potentially very dangerous.

  12. The study that showed the 66% decrease in alzheimer's and dementia was the study in Finland which used a traditional sauna?

  13. I only did the heat blanket and I loved that.

  14. What is the difference between Infrared therapy and Red Light Therapy?

  15. The best is to have one at home – Blessed It Be.

  16. I have had several infared saunas

  17. How would you respond to the following, " However, infrared saunas do produce EMF radiation as a byproduct of heating, and these are potentially damaging to your health"? Thanks.
