Menstruation is cleansing process. During this time of the month, a woman is not only eliminating an unfertilized egg, but eliminating lots of toxins and debris, and dead skin, etc. from her body as well.

As your body builds up for that release, your get a build-up of all this stuff and that’s why we get symptoms like bloating, constipation, lower back pain, break-outs, sugar cravings and that’s why PMS feels as bad as it does.

You also go through a lot of natural hormonal changes that get exacerbated during this time. A woman’s body and delicate hormonal balance is especially affected by the foods that we eat and even things like our thoughts can become powerful enough to cause fluctuations in our hormones and our state of mind, leading to things like anxiety and mood swings.

We get lots of OTC remedies for it but in most cases, they don’t deal with the underlying cause of the issue so they can provide very little relief.

The truth is that crazy PMS “monster” that some women face every month is not normal and not what nature intended. I’m talking from experience. I had horrible PMS for years but as my diet became cleaner, my body had a lot less toxins to contend with and my periods got shorter, lighter and less painful. Now I rarely suffer from cramps and PPMS is a thing of the past!

So the key is to fighting and beating PMS is to incorporate tools into our daily routines that help us the hormonal fluctuations and the pre-menstrual process

So instead of “dealing” with the PMS every month, I can give you things here that, with time and consistent use, will help you manage and eventually kick PMS right on the butt:

1. Eat Clean, whole foods
The less synthetic hormones, harsh chemicals and toxins you have in your body, the less of these will build up during the days before your period and the lesser will the PMS symptoms will become. Warming foods that are nourishing and nurturing like sauté leafy green vegetables and root vegetables will help you feel great.

2. Bye Bye Sugar
Stay away from refined sugars and refined foods at least the second half of your cycle. It’s too harsh on your body and the crash after the sugar high is not worth it. If you need a sweet treat, get some fruit or try dark chocolate.

3. Forgo Caffeine
Caffeine stresses your body and is a known inflammatory. All it will do is it will cause you to feel more bloated, stressed. Statistically, women who drink lots of caffeine are 4X more likely to have PMS. Do yourself a favor and stay away from all caffeine (including tea) at least a week before your period.

4. Use pad when possible or organic tampons
Regular cotton is bleached and have harsh chemicals in them. In addition, using tampons will stop that naturally occurring eliminating and cleansing process of the menstruation and can cause you to re-absorb some of the waste your body is trying to get rid of.

5. Supplement
Most of us don’t eat enough nutritious foods and are particularly deficient in iron. Having a multi-vitamin/multi mineral fortified with iron can help us balance our levels after losing a lot of it during menstruation every month.
