The Art and Science of Forest Bathing with Dr Qing Li
Shinrin-Yoku or forest bathing is the practice of spending time in the forest for better health, happiness and a sense of calm. A pillar of Japanese culture for decades, Shinrin-Yoku is a way to reconnect with nature, from walking mindfully in the woods, to a break in your local park, to walking barefoot on your lawn.
Forest Medicine expert, Dr Qing Li's research has proven that spending time around trees (even filling your home with house plants and vaporising essential tree oils) can reduce blood pressure, lower stress, boost energy, boost immune system and even help you to lose weight. In this video, filmed in Blackwood Forest, Dr Li introduces forest bathing, why it originated in Japan, and explains why you need to get out into the forest today.
Along with his years of ground-breaking research, anecdotes on the life-changing power of trees, Dr Li provides the practical ways for you to try forest bathing for yourself in his book Shinrin-Yoku: The Art and Science of Forest Bathing.

(calming piano music) – My name is Dr. Qing Li. I'm a physician at the Nippon Medical School Hospital and I'm the president of Japanese Science of Forest Medicine and I have studied the forest medicine of shnrin-yoku for 30 years. Shinrin-yoku directly translates to forest bathing. It is simply spending time in forest to promote good health. In fact, the shinrin-yoku originates in Japan in 1980's as our national health program to help the stress of the workers to reduce their stress. Now, there are about 62 forest therapy businesses of course in Japan and those businesses provide service with blood pressure check and some aromatherapy course. Also some work with forest therapy guide to work together to get some beneficial effect from the forest bathing. A lot have been fascinated and looked into leisure especially into forests. 2/3 of Japan are covered in forests. There are two major religions in Japan. Shinto and Buddhism. Both relate to and see forests as the realm of divine. We even have the word karoshi which means death from overwork so it makes sense for people to turn to forest to help. There are many, many beneficial factors on your health. For example, seniors who can't reduce blood pressure, seniors who can't reduce stress hormone and the stress situation. Shinrin-yoku will look at reducing blood sugar levels. The shinrin-yoku lifts depression. Shinrin-yoku can improve the quality of sleep. Shinrin-yoku can also boost your immune system including the increasing of natural cure cells and the activity of natural cure cells. Shinrin-yoku can also increase the proteins. Shinrin-yoku also improves concentration and increase your memory, yeah. You can visit city parks to enjoy shinrin-yoku. In fact, in my research, two hours of shinrin-yoku in the city parks also can get many, many benefits. In fact, like shinrin-yoku can improve your positive feelings and reduce your negative feelings. In my personal experience, I always visit some park near my office almost everyday during lunch time. So if you have a small park near your home or near your office, you also can enjoy the city park during your lunch time. You also can put some plants or flowers in your home office to enjoy it for itself. You can also produce some aroma by using essential oils to produce some smell and you will enjoy the sense of smell of the forest breathing. In this book, I show you how to practice shinrin-yoku. I also show you lots of data on the benefits of shinrin-yoku so if you want to find the health and happiness, please read my book Shrin-yoku.

The video needs subtitles as I can't understand what he is saying.
There is a Scandinavian place in Portland Oregon named Nordic Northwest which has forest bathing sessions on its land. It is wonderful when people learn positive customs from other cultures.
❤❤❤❤forests are oxigen givers❤❤❤
i'm reading studies about this topic every day and everything Dr Qing Li says is proven. It is actually proven that even 5min in a forest are already beneficial. Already by thinking about visiting the forest later, one relaxes. But it was not possible to find huge differences between doing anything "special" (like he might promote in his book) comparing to just sitting or walking or even doing an activity one has no interest into at all in the forest – one will still have the health benefits.
That's why we need to plant more trees instead of cutting them. Is our breath
Beautiful, since i was a child, I need the forests to health myself and always look at the trees instead of people, i used to feel them so much.
I go to the jungle or woods everyday . hugs some trees, kiss some flowers, play with the dog
I went to Vermont spent five days immersing myself in the forest and was able to completely stop taking blood pressure medication now I know why… I'm actually heading back right now to spend another five this guy is dead on great work and I hope he enjoys his retirement
Smart work
Thanks for introducing us to this wonderful effect of forest bathing and immunology (Shinrin-yoku, Prof Qing Li).
I will dig more into it definitely, I have been always felt walking in forests is highly beneficial for spiritual and mental well-being. Also see, https://youtu.be/9jPNll1Ccn0

GOD strictly forbids occultism and spiritism! Please don't worship nature, worship our CREATOR! Accept JESUS CHRIST as your Lord and Savior today!!! Please read the Bible, listen to real theologians like Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. David Reagan and their guests – also on end times events.

Thank you for this film! Just a little sugesstion: I think when Dr Qing Li talkes about efects of shinrin yoku, he mentions increase of natural killer cells, not natural cure cells as it appears on the subtitle.
There is an upward rush of energy rising in every tree-trunk, which can be used to draw negative energy from your system, and is the reason for "Tree-Hugging."
It works equally well if you lean your back against a tree, and is less conspicuous …
I live amongst trees, some of which arose naturally, where underground water seeps down the mountain, and others, fruit and nut trees, planted by the previous owner. Those I have to water.
Every Monday morning I divert the two water courses which cross my land, and create a pool of spring water around the base of each tree, and this brings me even closer to the trees and the environment in general, since I am a part of the process. The water comes from the tops of the Sierra Nevada — so you could say my oranges are full of snow !
Thank you for putting a name to something that connects me to the numinous.
Thanks for sharing 🌈
Imagine… allowing and empowering forests to regenerate will expand the capacity for humanity to regenerate – individually and collectively. May we all more clearly see and more deeply feel our vital connection with Earth – in time to thrive together. Thank you Dr. Qing Li for helping guide us back to nature… I hear the forest calling… time for a bath!
Will read it too but unsure where to find forest to bath in here!
Dear Sir, Thank you for nice video.
HI Dr…go barefoot
Digital Forst therapy brings me here.

Thanks Doctor. "The country is the world of the soul, the city is the world of bodies." ~ Baha'u'llah, from Bahá’u’lláh and the New Era, Baha'i Faith
This is exactly why Japan is ahead of the world . Here in America they prescribe medication for issues like this 🤦🏾♂️
Wonderful person, wonderful book
THIS BOOK WAS EXCELLENT! and I also combined it with forest therapy by Sarah ivens and like FOREST BATHING HAS BECOME MY FAVOURITE ACTIVITY!!!!!!

When it occurs in the Amazon it is a forest fire caused by man, when it occurs in any other part of the world it is a wild forest fire. It is pure prejudice of the traditional media against Brazil. The fire in Amazon is cyclical as it is in many other parts of the world. We have a dry season between May and September when it is common to occur fires everywhere in Amazon…
Nature heals
Very nice book, Dr Li. We have just published our Ecosystems album, which talks about other aspects of nature through images https://environmenteurope.eu/ecosystems-complexity-diversity-and-natures-contribution-to-humanity The book has received letters of support from many academics from all around the world, former heads of DG Environment at the European Commission, IUCN, Nobel-prize winning climate change economists, founder of Schumacher College, Sir David Attenborough, Prime Minster Macron, Prime Minister Rutte, HH Pope Francis and many more.
Ok. So tl;dr since I stumbled across this trendy thing. Get into nature, focus on life in the moment and in nature, slow down, and do what people have realized they needed to do for thousands of years. Tree hugging, holding, fondling not necessary. That’s it. That’s all it is.
el es japones o chino?
Amazing. I have known for years that I always needed a walk in the woods to re-set. It is where I feel best. Now Dr. Li you have shed new light on things for me. Thank You! I also wanted you to see what we are up to at my company – the first and only LIVE Moss Walls – http://www.MossWalls.com We are now adding essential oils with hope our misting system will potentially provide a phytonocide effect to the indoor air space and boost killer cells for the inhabitants. If nothing else, our live moss and water feature are pretty mesmerizing on their own. Be well and thank you. Al Benner – President Moss Walls
So, go eat 3 pot 🍪🍪🍪, and spend all day in the forest!
j'adore 🖤
And it is better to practice qi gong in nature rather than on a dojo.
@ 2:10 : "For example Shinrin-Yoku can reduce blood pressure" , etc. The subtitles read "senior" instead of "Shinrin -Yoku" in which the syllables are run together.
keep doing what you are doing!
