the amount of free sugar or added sugar someone to consume in one day should be no more than 25 grams in a single day which is about that now the average American consumes about 75 grams of free sugar added sugar per day which is almost half of a cup basically that but despite knowing this most people can't overcome their sugar addiction but if someone is determined it's certainly possible the very first step to quitting sugar is awareness in order to determine success you first have to be aware of two things one is that people should eat less than 25 grams of added sugar or free sugar per day and two is at 75 percent of the foods in grocery stores contain some form of added sugar and some kind of hidden or not so hidden form for example just about every condiment and cereal has added sugar in it so you have to look out for the hidden sugars that are listed under various names on the ingredients label things like high fructose corn syrup dextrose or maltose in about 250 others food companies do a fantastic job of coming up with these clever names for sugar like pineapple extract so if you're able to know for sure that you're eating less than 25 grams of free sugar per day you know that you have successfully quit sugar step number two is recognizing that you have a sugar addiction and understanding the negative impacts of excessive sugar consumption on your health something to talk about in many of my videos including this one right here now step number three is to never quit sugar cold turkey can it be done yes but for most people it ends up backfiring because the withdrawal symptoms are so strong that they end up binging on even more sugar than they would normally eat so to quit sugar you want to gradually reduce sugar intake in order to avoid suffering severe withdrawal symptoms now start by cutting back on added sugars in your diet especially sugar that comes in the liquid form so things like soda juice and coffee that contains syrup or other sugar that's added liquid sugar is the worst because it's highly concentrated and it's rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and this causes the pancreas to release massive amounts of insulin liquid sugar is the fastest way to develop insulin resistance so after cutting out the liquid sugar you can then move on to the next step which is satisfying your sweet tooth with healthier Alternatives meaning whole fruit for example this means eating an apple and not a processed Apple like applesauce or apple juice the more that the apple is processed the more fiber that is taken out of it which means sugar is absorbed faster causing a bigger insulin Spike step number five is managing the cravings when sugar Cravings strike try to distract yourself with some kind of engaging activity so when we're sitting down or when we're bored or anxious or stressed or when we're tired our sugar Cravings they go up so doing all the other stuff that is healthy for you ends up helping to reduce your Cravings so this means getting good sleep exercising stress reduction drinking plenty of water and eating regular healthy meals that include vegetables and so forth sugar Cravings start in the hypothalamus part of your brain now there's different hormones that affect the sugar Cravings in the hypothalamus this includes things like leptin insulin ghrelin and glp-1 glucagon like peptide one when you live a healthy lifestyle the hypothalamus gradually decreases these Cravings in fact that's why these new glp-1 drugs like ozampic wigovi and Manjaro they actually eliminate or at least reduce Cravings in the brain and that's why they cause people to lose weight and lower their insulin levels we're seeing people who take these drugs have less sugar Cravings even less of a desire to drink alcohol which by the way alcohol is another reason why people gain weight as the ethanol molecule is very similar to the fructose molecule and they both cause many of the same health effects including damage to the liver regardless most people are not able to quit sugar but it can be done now based on what I've seen by far the easiest way to do it if we're being honest here is with these new glp-1 Agonist drugs it's the reason why it improves type 2 diabetes it improves obesity in other diseases that stem from insulin resistance such as fatty liver disease it's because people they end up eating less sugar when they're on these drugs just remember to be patient and persistent because overcoming sugar addiction it does take some time and there might be setbacks along the way our taste buds they have a natural turnover rate meaning the cells within them are constantly being replaced now on average it takes a couple weeks for our taste buds to adjust once you're able to hit that two to three week Mark of reducing the sugar you're much more likely to have significantly decreased cravings and if you want to learn more about why people can't quit sugar I'm actually making a video on that which is probably right here by the time that you're watching this

  2. How am i supposed to eat less than 25 sugars if apples and other fruits have 6 to 10 depending on their sizes ans such?

  3. I just want my choccy milk every day that’s all

  4. I've seen multiple other doctors on here saying to go cold turkey, but set aside time to do it.

  5. Umm your thumbnail creeped me out so much I clicked. It worked.

  6. I have never had sweet tooth, but due to perimenopause I have observed my sugar cravings going up. Especially particular foods, like jam, ice creams, tea, coffee, pastries, cakes, dough nuts…😶 and if I don't have it, I feel agitated 😪 really fed up of these cravings. No idea how do I stop..

  7. I’m going to cut down my sugar intake after realizing eating 2-3 chocolate bars a day for 2 weeks wasn’t a good idea 🫠🫠

  8. At the moment, I am on a low-fiber diet due to my first diverticulitis flare-up. Thus no whole apples for me yet. And when I do eat them again, I’ll likely have to take off the skin first.

  9. I have a question…i do want to stop sugar and be healthy… but then when i imagine that means no more chocolates or icecream… i back down, i want to stop sugar but i cant imagine not ever again having chocolates or ice cream.. how do i fix this thinking? Thanks

  15. Now I eat sugar-free for 4 weeks now. Im very proud 🙂 🎉 I akready had several sugarfree periods in my life but always fell back sooner or later. I quit cold turkey, because for me gradual exit is not working, cravings remained very strong. If cravings remain then eventually they will win over your willpower!! Impossible to say no forever. Now almost no cravings for me. I eat onky very small fruit and no artificial sweeteners to reduce the sweet regime and it helps me with reduce the cravings. I hope this time i can last for at least 6 months!

  16. Thanks dr Mike Handsome!

  17. My grandma ate 10 sugar donuts a day and she lives till 90s.

  18. The names for sugar are helpful. Obsessively read ingredient lists (and again since they tend to change formulation). I have found that cutting out sugar means cooking for scratch since it is in almost all convenience foods. For a bit of sweet, I use mostly allulose.

  19. There seems to be a lot of doctors on YouTube named Mike lol

  20. I’m 22. Always had a huge sweet tooth. Although I am at an average weight, I started to cut out sugar, carbs, and sodium to reduce my face fat. Been having fruit and sweet potatoes for my sweets (I no longer even need to eat them with brown sugar!). I have my burgers with no buns and now I prefer them that way. Tastes more like steak. I get a rotisserie chicken and can meal prep with it. No more fast food, no more cookies, chips, etc. This weekend I thought I’d treat myself to a tiny bag of nerds clusters. I was repulsed at how sweet it was. How did I ever like stuff like this before? Made my teeth hurt too. Starting this diet has changed my taste buds completely. I do need to be careful with my fruits because of sugar but so far doing great! Next thing I need to implement is my veggies. So far I only have salads and it gets boring. Also need to work on my coffee! That is my main source of sugar intake. I can’t drink black coffee but I can find sugar free alternatives. But overall I’ve noticed some weight loss and my mood is great because of all the nutrients I’m getting

  21. Its been 2 weeks since I decided to do the 30 days no added sugar challenge and so far its been great! What I do is just eat whole foods and make sure i'm not starving, drink LOTS of water, and replace the sweet snacks with fruits. I have a cheat day once a week but of course still in moderation and still eating mindfully 😊

  22. You DO need some sugar. Go for less sugar not cutting it out for good.

  23. Why does everyone demonize Sugar? What's so wrong with brown sugar or cane Sugar?

I have 1 teaspoon of brown sugar everyday in my cup of tea; is that really so bad?

  24. I’ve been 22 days without sugar, processed carbs..bread, pasta, rice, crackers, chips etc, no fruit, no dairy just grass fed butter, no beans not nuts, no white potato, no corn, no nightshade vegetables, no alcohol and I feel ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! Also many ailments I had disappeared.

    I also run 15 to 20 miles a week, 38 years old🙌🏽

  25. Well, well a doctor pushing pharma!!! sickening

  26. I went cold turkey. Have successfully been off sugar 99%. I am sure there is a hint of sugar in my 3 cups of coffee creamer in the morning. The weight drops off fast and stabilizes at a healthy level. Lost a total of 17 pounds over 6 months. It motivated me to add 25 minutes of exercising every morning before work. I get tested around sugar all the time but I am ok to say no. I’m good. I quit chewing tobacco cold turkey. Been off nicotine for 13 yrs. I do eat a cookie or two around a holiday or two but that’s it. Been off sugar 98% for 6.5 years now. It’s doable if you really want it.

  27. Dr. Hansen. Thank you so much for your Relevant and Concise Precious information encouraging ud to get rid of this addictive white poison they put in nearly everything. And hidden under so many synonyms….Many thanks again🙏

  28. So the easiest way is get on meds. really!?
Where is common sense and self discipline then?
If something is harmful we need to avoid it by not consuming.

  29. Take it from someone who's cut almost all added sugars out of his diet: once it's done, it feels amazing, and added sugars start looking more disgusting than tasty.

  30. Could you please recommend vitamins to reduce sugar cravings?

  31. A powerful way to quit sugar is to buy yourself some premium expensive cake or some other sweets, then throw it away without eating even one bit.

  32. That really didn’t help. I know most of that what can I do to stop the craving I’ve been trying for a year now
