[Music] hey everyone welcome or welcome back if you're new here my name is nina i'm a life transformation coach and here at this channel we talk all about mental health personal development and understanding our own psychology so if you're not yet a subscriber please go ahead and become one we definitely want you to stay connected so today we're going to be talking all about how cleaning and decluttering can improve our mental health and really the psychology behind decluttering and getting organized today's video is one in a whole series that i have made on this topic because it is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart this is something that i used to struggle with greatly and actually caused me a lot of suffering i had no idea how to get organized or to really clean up my mess and it took me years to not only understand what was happening psychologically but to actually correct the problem so i like to offer as much support as i can in this area because i know it is possible to change if it's something that you desire to do so i will go ahead and link that playlist down in the description box below just in case you need that extra support so let's start at the very beginning now we know through research that living in a messy and cluttered environment can really start to extend into our emotional environment and certainly begin to affect our mental health this type of environment even when we feel that we are used to it is overwhelming it is causing our brain to take in so much sensory information that it is very likely we are going to feel anxious and stressed out think about what happens when we enter a room that's really really loud and chaotic the first thing that we want to do is leave we want to get away from that but the same thing happens when we are in our homes and we have too much visual stimulation around us our brain is going to be reacting to this chaos because it craves order it's like we can't really relax we cannot rest we never feel really settled but on the flip side when we start to address this issue and we begin the decluttering process it is amazing how significant the benefits of doing so can really be so let's go ahead and talk about the six different ways that cleaning and decluttering can improve our mental health number one decluttering boosts self-confidence and self-efficacy living in clutter and mass can make us feel like we have no control over our lives and can lead us to feel like we are hopeless or helpless or even feel like a failure which is of course never the case but decluttering and cleaning does the opposite it actually helps us to feel empowered we become the ones that get to decide what we should keep and what we should give away where things should go in our household we work on our problem solving skills and our decision making skills and we realize that we really are in charge of our own life we prove to ourselves that we are competent and it gives us a sense of accomplishment and self-trust and in addition to that we can feel proud of our space we no longer have to be embarrassed when other people stop by number two decluttering decreases stress so science has shown us that there is a direct link between clutter and the stress hormone cortisol remember in the back of our mind when we are seeing all this mess and clutter build up somewhere deep down we know that we are just piling on more and more work for us to do in the future decluttering greatly reduces our stress level because it's like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders it actually causes us more stress to avoid a problem than to really start attacking and addressing a problem so once we even just begin on that process we are going to find that we are a lot less stressed out number three decluttering reduces anxiety when things are scattered and out of order it is natural that we feel anxious because again our brain is just craving that order it is craving that clarity it wants everything to be in its place and finally when we start to clean and declutter it greatly reduces anxiety now this is something that i never would have believed in the past because for me just thinking about cleaning and organizing really caused me a great deal of anxiety so it wasn't until i really put this into practice that i could see that it was indeed the case and a big part of the reason for this is that outer order greatly contributes to inner calm so when we start to declutter and clean our home can feel cozy and warm and inviting and a lot less threatening to us so it can start to feel like a sanctuary and as someone who has been through this transformation i really understand what it's like to have a home that really makes you feel on edge that makes you experience a lot of negative emotions or makes you feel insufficient or overwhelmed all the time but again seeing the end result of cleaning and decluttering and really changing our lifestyle to support that it's amazing what it feels like to come into a home that makes you feel relaxed and happy and that feels safe and warm and secure number four decluttering can improve family or relationship tension just on a practical level when our house is messy or disorganized it is hard to find things we lose things all the time and we spend so much time frantically searching for necessary items and when this is happening it's easy for us to lose our temper or to feel anxious or to snap at the people that we love and also when we live or we are in a relationship with other people who can't really understand why we are messy or disorganized it can cause a lot of arguments and a lot of hurt feelings on both sides when we declutter these types of stressors are really eliminated from our relationships because there's simply less conflict there's less things to get upset about and in addition it enhances our relationships because we are more comfortable having other people come into our space number five decluttering helps fight depression living in an overly cluttered or messy space can also be linked to negative mental states because on some level we equate our living space to our inner self studies have shown us that people who describe their home as being cluttered or messy tend to say they feel fatigued or depressed much more often than people who describe their homes to be restful or restorative cleaning has been shown to improve our mood and give us a sense of satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment whereas when we are feeling depressed and we are looking around at our messy house we are going to feel worse and it's going to start to feed into a very negative cycle but studies also show that if we can disrupt this cycle by starting the cleaning and organizational process even if we are just taking baby steps it's been shown that it can energize us and improve our mood and our outlook and number six decluttering makes it easier to focus of course we are going to feel like we can't concentrate and we can't focus when there is so much visual stimulation all around us we are living in complete chaos again even when we are used to it our brain really translates it as chaos we feel like we can't focus on the things that are important in our life that are necessary in our life a lot of times many times we can't complete tasks even when we are very interested in them because we are so overwhelmed and because we really do lack that focus but when we are finally able to create a space for ourselves that is clean and organized our brain and our body is able to relax and when we are relaxed we are able to focus and we are able to create that mental space for the things that really matter in our life because prior to this all these other things we're really competing for our time and attention even things that really didn't deserve our time and attention but they were right there in the front so they were always receiving it but when we have that mental space to direct our focus to the things that really matter to us we're going to find that our life also becomes a lot more meaningful so it is clear that cleaning and organizing can certainly offer so many benefits to our mental health it can help us to feel happier more at peace more rested and certainly much more in control of our life and i know if you are watching this and you struggle in this area you may be thinking well that's probably all true but i will never be able to change so what is the point i want you to know that you can change if i can change you can change and i would love to offer you further support in that area so please do check out the playlist that i have put in the description box below it is going to walk you through a system that will help you in a very non-threatening way to start to work on this issue first by figuring out why we have the issue to begin with which is really key and then how to take baby steps to making really significant changes in our behavior so i truly hope you find that to be helpful and i hope today's video was interesting and insightful if you enjoyed it please like it share it with anyone else who may need to also see this video today and i thank you so much for spending time with me today i truly hope the rest of your day is extraordinary take care guys you
