you've probably been hearing a lot of Buzz about anti-inflammatory foods so we asked one of the leading experts Dr Andrew W about what foods to look out for and how to change your body from the inside out how does the inflammatory process affect the average woman we all know inflammation on the surface of the body it's local redness heat swelling and pain uh that's actually the Cornerstone of the body's healing response it's how the body gets more nourishment and immune energy to an area that's injured or under attack if inflammation persists and it serves no purpose it causes disease describe the basics of an anti-inflammatory diet so the first step of an anti-inflammatory diet is to stop eating or drastically reduced consumption of pering process that manur food and replace that with whole real natural food so what's your take on carbohydrates you know I generally recommend that people eat 40 and 50% of their calories as carbohydrates but most of it should be in the form of this slow digesting low glycemic load carbohydrate that's beans uh sweet potatoes winter squashes and whole grains whole grains mean a grain or something that's cracked into big pieces it's whole wheat bread is not a whole grain food it's made from flour and it will promote inflammation so how do specific Foods calm the inflammatory process and how much of them do you have to consume well a lot of it is avoiding the foods that are pro-inflammatory all the refined process and manufacture food and the more you get them out of the diet the more you moderate uh inflammation then you want to add healthy fats olive oil and omega-3 Rich fish uh fruits and vegetables have a lot of protective compounds so you want to have plenty of them in the diet and then there's specific anti-inflammatory agents like ginger turmeric the yellow spice also and so do we have to consume bucket loads of this to actually make a difference no I think in terms of U of omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil somewhere around 2 GS a day is a good beginning dose of that uh with spices like ginger and turmeric if you can get a teaspoon into dishes uh that that would be great and in terms of Omega-3s what's your take on supplements versus eating fish I I eat fish and I also take supplemental fish oil the omega-3 deficiency is so widespread in our society I think it's a good idea for everyone to take a fish oil supplement 2 to 4 gram a day and I also eat fish maybe four times a week so what are your overall tips to maintain a healthful lifestyle learn the principles of the anti-inflammatory diet get regular physical activity get good rest and sleep uh learn some method of stress reduction my favorite are simple breathing techniques teach us how to breath we're ready start with deep slow quiet regular breathing that'll take you a long way okay take a deep breath now thanks so much for being with us today a pleasure thanks for watching fit sugar TV
