from ice baths to saunas i'm trying it all finding the best ways to live a healthy and cheerful life and in this video i'm going to explain the benefits of infrared saunas i used to work for a company who sold infrared saunas and one year i worked at a home exhibition and in return for my work i got this sauna and it now sits in my mum's living room so the first place we're going to start is the difference between a normal sauna and an infrared sauna a traditional sauna whether it be a wet one or a dry one heats the air inside using a heat source whether that be woods an electric stove or steam and an infrared sauna uses infrared light to heat whatever is inside the sauna but don't think microwave it uses far infrared light and the frequency of that light which is invisible to the human eye is perceived in the body as heat and if you're thinking core blimey that sounds exactly like a microwave some massage therapists use infrared light prior to treatment they primarily use near-infrared and mid-infrared light to warm the muscles relax the body and increase circulation to the area before treatment you'll also be familiar with infrared light that's used in lamps in pub gardens and gardens infrared saunas have all the same benefits as a regular sauna as it's a way of warming the body so let's cover those benefits first and if you're here watching this video to find out the benefits of infrared saunas specifically then jump ahead in this video i'll put the time stamp up here this is probably an important point for me to say i'm not a doctor or anything remotely similar i'm just a regular person looking for ways to live a healthy and cheerful life and i've done the best i can to find the most accurate information possible for this video that's that bit out the way let's talk about the benefits saunas have been used for thousands of years with the earliest thought to be from 2000 bc with heat penetrating the body and relaxing the muscles it's great for achy muscles and joints and conditions such as arthritis we all know that wonderful feeling of stepping inside the sauna and as soon as the heat touches our body it's instantly relaxing it's now known that stress is a contributing factor towards disease being in a sauna not only provides relaxation for the body but also provides a calming environment for the mind with that relaxation comes a reduction in stress hormones it's kind of a holistic approach not looking directly at the benefits of using heat on the body but more so looking at the entire process of using a sauna when using a sauna it helps stimulate heat shock proteins in the body which in turn increase the amount of lymphocytes neutrophils and basophils in the blood and these are all types of white blood cells that help protect against infection and as we age the proteins in our cells may start to dysfunction or become damaged heat shock proteins which are stimulated with sauna use help prevent that damage to the cell and there's a fascinating video over here on youtube by dr rhonda patrick and i'll add that up here i really recommend watching it it's also been found that people with increased levels of heat shock proteins have a greater chance of living to 100 if that's your kind of vibe and this thing of heat shock proteins it's similar to that of having ice baths where having cold therapy stimulates cold shock proteins and if you want to learn more about cold therapy i'll add a video of me sitting in a wheelie bin of ice cold water up here the next point is a bit of a tricky one because there's various thoughts on detoxing it seems that the word is thrown around quite a lot these days and also there's a number of conflicting articles online to suggest that sauna use is either good for detoxing or it doesn't detox us at all i'm not qualified to give you the correct answer so i'll do my best to give you a good one the body is detoxing all the time with the liver and kidneys doing most of the work sweating however has the primary role to cool the body down when it's hot and some studies show that sweat does have toxins heavy metals and chemicals in but with so many conflicting articles online it's hard to know what's correct here are some statements that i found on the internet this one suggests that sweat has no toxins in but then i also found this one saying that sweating does help us detox from heavy metals and eliminate chemicals it's really hard to know what's true but you know what there's loads of other benefits so for the word detoxing i think i'll leave that one with you guys getting warm in a sauna mimics cardiovascular activity increasing plasma and blood flow to the heart and increasing the heart rate it's been said online that using an infrared sauna for an hour you can burn between three and six hundred calories and that seemed like loads for just sitting here doing nothing so i did a little test i sat in my sauna for an hour and i monitored my calorie burn and i burnt 80 calories and that's really far from 300 to 600 calories so if you are looking to get a sauna exclusively for calorie burn then i'd say you're probably looking into it for the wrong reason but that is just my personal opinion saying that past lt maybe using a sauna could be really good for someone who leads an inactive lifestyle whether that be out of choice or not out of choice at least using a sauna will gently increase the heart rate and just give a little bit of mild cardiovascular activity it has been shown that sauna use has been linked to increase longevity and therefore living a longer life and i'm going to have to read this one from my notes a 20-year study was conducted on men aged between 50 and 65 and it showed that those who had four to seven saunas a week had a 40 decrease in mortality and that mortality wasn't linked to any accidents it was just linked to diseases such as cancer and heart disease so essentially that tells us that using a sauna can help us live longer how mega is that and just to let you know that study was done using a traditional sauna but i would imagine that the results would be pretty similar to an infrared sauna because both are increasing body heat increasing circulation and also stimulating heat shock proteins and all that jazz so that leads me nicely to what are the benefits of infrared saunas specifically unlike traditional saunas infrared saunas operate at a lower heat a regular one is about 160 to 190 degrees fahrenheit whereas an infrared sauna is about 110 to 140 degrees fahrenheit and just because there's less heat it doesn't necessarily mean that there's less benefits the lower temperature may be good for people that can't tolerate heat plus the lower temperature means that you can sit in here for far longer without getting that suffocating feeling of the hot air around us in a traditional sauna the time to stay in is around 10 to 20 minutes maybe longer if you're used to heat and in an infrared sauna you can sit comfortably in it for an hour maybe even longer it's common to think that the hotter the temperature the more benefits we're experiencing but that really hot temperature for some can be really stressful and there are many benefits of that gentler infrared heat the infrared heat can penetrate up to 10 times deeper than a regular sauna with a normal sauna the heat will penetrate the skin about three millimeters but sitting in an infrared sauna the heat will penetrate up to 30 millimeters which is 10 times more that's three centimeters and that's because we're using light to penetrate the body as opposed to direct heat i hope that makes sense a joint like the elbow or the knee for example with three centimeters of heat penetration that means it's going almost all the way through the entire joint and with that heat comes an increase in repair to the area i'll add another great video up here of a great explanation of how infrared heat can really help with pain in the neck and the back unlike a traditional sauna there isn't any plumbing or special fittings required for an infrared sauna and this for me is the biggest benefit it just plugs into a regular household socket and away we go each of these carbon panels are essentially energy saving light bulbs so they use very little energy and one of the best things about this is this sauna only costs about 30 pence to use for one hour there's only about five minutes until it heats up but as soon as you turn the unit on you can jump straight in because the light will start working on your body and i've been told that these panels last for 10 000 hours which means that if i was to use the sauna every single day for one hour it would last 27 years and this sauna comes flat pack and slots together easily and it can be moved if i move house one of the downsides of this is the amount of space it takes up and my mum really wants her living room back so i'll be selling this one soon but i am going to try an infrared blanket and do a video review on that which i'm really looking forward to so if you want to see that then look out for that on my channel and before this video ends here's just a few neutral points that i want to add in about infrared saunas i have read that an infrared sauna induces a deeper sweat than a regular one because the heat penetrates deeper into the skin and this is said to be seven times more effective at removing toxins and heavy metals from the body i'm not entirely convinced about this only on the fact that our sweat glands are located three to five mil underneath our skin and that three to five mil then a regular sauna will hit that area any deeper than it's just going into the muscle and you can't sweat fire your muscle or at least i don't think so if you know any different and you're qualified to say then please add it in the comments box infrared light is said to be antibacterial antifungal and antiviral but from the research that i've done it seems that near and medium for red light has those properties and not necessarily the far infrared light that's coming from these saunas i really wish i had access to a doctor and a laboratory and we could put all these things to the test detoxing heavy metals seven times more effective antifungal antiviral who knows maybe one day we can do it it's what dreams are made of the recommended time to sit in an infrared sauna is between 30 and 45 minutes three times a week some infrared saunas come as pods and others are cabin styles like my one and the same infrared light is used in lamps blankets and other devices and some of these devices i really look forward to reviewing on my channel soon i really like my infrared sauna mainly because i can use it at home and sit in it for ages i really feel as though i get many benefits such as relaxation and pain relief and if you're looking to buy an infrared sauna and you're based in the uk then i got mine from a company called the wellness tree and their units are really well made the customer service is excellent and the emf which is the electromagnetic field on this device is as close to zero as it can be if you're into stuff like that if you have any questions about infrared saunas or you're experiencing benefits yourself then i would love to hear from you in the comments box i've got lots more videos coming up i've got product reviews and i've got challenges all things about living a healthy and cheerful life so if you're into stuff like that then consider hitting the subscribe button and if you've got any suggestions on what i want to make a video about then please put that in the comments box i really hope you found this video useful thanks for watching and hopefully i'll see you at another video again soon okey-dokey that was a bit of a hot one wasn't it [Music] nice though i haven't broke my other camera

  1. Hi Laura! I love all your videos. I'm a 2nd year medical student (w/PhD in biomedical engineering) and wanted to share some info about your question regarding heat depth of IR and sweat gland depth/function around 10:20. As you noted, your body sweats to cool itself down (also sweating is an emunctory action by the skin, hence detox component). It's not so much about depth of sweat glands vs depth of energy penetration. The mechanism is: IR energy penetrates tissue deeper > thus energy increases temperature in more tissue > your body has to work harder via sweating/circulation to regulate temp vs if using less penetrating heat, where less tissue is above homeostasis. The more you are sweating/increasing circulation to cool down, then this inherently results in greater removal of toxins via circulation/liver/kidney and sweating. As you noted, higher temp doesn't mean better or safe for some, so always good to consult w/your doc. Proper functioning of emunctory organs (e.g., lungs exhale CO2, liver/kidneys filter blood, skin excretes sweat, etc.) helps your body maintain health by removing toxins (many of which are natural byproducts of our daily cellular functions). Hope that helps! I enjoy all your content, positivity, and well informed videos… keep 'em coming!

  2. I thought infrared saunas don't get hot enough to give the same benefit as regular. Rhonda Patrick makes a point to talk about the temperature needed and from what I read infrared saunas can't get that hot

  3. Some people use the "woods" in their sauna. Wow you sound so expert.

  4. thank you I been looking for a sauna I just don't understand when they say :clear light I feared sauna or just infra-red sauna .is that different or the same I'm confused don't know what to get .please explain ❤ yr video

  5. 🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:

00:28 🧖‍♀️ Infrared saunas use far infrared light to heat the body, which differs from traditional saunas that heat the air directly.
02:34 💆‍♂️ Saunas induce relaxation, reduce stress hormones, and stimulate heat shock proteins, aiding in cell repair and potentially increasing longevity.
07:13 🔥 Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures than traditional saunas, yet penetrate deeper into the body, offering pain relief, relaxation, and potential detoxification benefits.

  6. Does the living room gain moisture?

  7. Infrared saunas stimulate the release of toxins from fat too 😊

  8. Did she ever try the blanket ??

  9. I think you know how to pronounce the word sauna, but you don't pronounce it correctly. Is it British arrogance? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRtxq2qug7w

  10. 🔥🔥🔥thank you

  11. I love you more, than before. Every video makes me love you more.

  12. Assalamualaikum I am dr nazrul lslam and also fine by the Grace of Allah May Allah bless you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  13. Love your videos! So full of great info, well made, well explained. Thank you!

  14. We have to share the video which helps the algorithm. Some more people will see your video. You’re very good at presentation, etc..🎉

  15. Your videos are brilliant. Thank you for making them 😁👍

  16. Can infrared saunas reach high temperatures like normal saunas?

  17. Hi there. I liked you video however why no mention of the EMF risks?

  18. Also – "Smartwatches and fitness trackers provide an estimate of calories burned based on factors such as age and workout regimen123. However, studies have shown that they are not accurate enough to reliably determine calories burned145. They can be off anywhere between 40% to 80% of your actual energy expenditure5. While they are accurate enough to be useful for most people for most purposes, it varies by what it is you’re trying to measure2 "

  19. My understanding from a chemist who made a video on 'where does the fat go' like any chemical reaction when fat is broken down to burn as energy, the waste products leave in our sweat, faeces, urine and breath. So Sweat, can be evidence of burning fat. It can also just be water released to keep the body from over heating though. It doesn't contain 'toxins' per say. Heat increases lymphatic drainage, which IS one of the ways our body removes toxins, as well as through the liver. The liver also enjoys heat therapy, I believe. So I don't think that sweat always = fat loss. But it can be, depending on the situation. In this case the research suggests infared light does break down fat, so it probably aids, along with a healthy lifestyle, in fat loss.

  20. Hi! Why not take a drop of sweat and test 😅

  21. Hi Laura, very enjoyable and informative video, thankyou

  22. How did you measure your calory burn????

  23. I have tested my infrared sauna many times to see if it removes THC and I most say that it works extremely well at it.

  24. I love the thought of being able to bring in a book which would get soggy in my steam sauna! 📖✨

  25. This has to be the law of attraction. I just finished a novel last night in which the beautiful heroine kept saying “Cor!” – and I haven’t heard anyone else say that in decades or more. Thank you! I just got a portable steam sauna but am getting signs for infrared now too and wanted to know the differences in benefits. 💖 A cheerful life is the best way! Wishing you all the happiness in the world! From here in Canada, eh! I just noticed another Pohl was the last comment so this really is the law of attraction. Synchronicity is always a good sign from the universe. 💖♾🧘‍♀️🌸🦋✨

  26. Wo bekommt mann den einen Aufheitzbaren Schlarf sack den her für im Bett die Sauna zu machen ?

  27. I sweat a lot. There is a big puddle under me at the end which I lift out and pour into the bathtub while rinsing out the catchment. How do you get these nicer wood FIR saunas rinsed out and clean without taking it outside on a hand truck and blasting it with a garden house while tipping it over?

  28. The gym I belong to got one recently. I really like it. I stay in for half an hour at about at about 140 degrees.
