hi I'm Dr Santos GAA head of Department of medical oncology at Mazuma Cancer Center narana Health City February 4th is World cancer day we all know that on this occasion I would like to convey a strong message about cancer awareness which is the key in fighting this deadly disease cancer what is awareness what awareness do we need to raise about awareness about the existing preventive measures that we can take to reduce the risk of cancer about screening for early detection that way we can cure the cancer at a very early stage the cutting a treatments that's available currently and survivorship what to do after cancer treatment is done and also holistic Cancer Care not just looking at the patient but caregivers and giving a holistic care as well let me share some of the preventive measures for reducing the risk of developing cancer the first number one killer modifiable risk factor is tobacco please avoid tobacco in any form it may be cigarettes it may be electronic cigarettes it may be cigars it may be smokeless tobacco chewable tobacco or any other form of tobacco tobacco is bad 30% of cancer deaths are because of tobacco if you are currently using tobacco you need to quit if you have a hard time quitting please seek the help of a medical professional immediately the next one is to either limit alcohol intake or completely avoid alcohol intake alcohol has been linked to many cancers in women breast cancer it's linked to breast cancer we know that so best is to either avoid or limit intake of alcohol in moderation healthy heating is very very important you have to consume a lot of fruits and vegetables five servings a day should comprise of fruits and vegetables either three servings of fruits and two servings of vegetables or two servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables it is proven to improve your health and prevent risk of developing cancer if you are a non-vegetarian void red meat and processed meat like sausage bacon because these are proven to be probable carcinogens means they can cause cancer avoid fast foods and also avoid sugary and fatty foods maintain a ideal body weight for your height because that is very important in reducing the risk of cancer exercise at least 20 to 30 minutes even a brisk walk will do a day either from 5 to 7 days a week that is very very essential to be active avoid excess sun exposure which can increase your risk of developing skin cancer so use hats and sunscreens judiciously to prevent skin cancer get vaccinated for Hepatitis B so that you can prevent this deadly liver cancer and also if you have someone known to you between ages of 9 and 26 between 9 and 26 you can get them vaccinated for HPV human papilloma virus this is a new vaccine that's available when both boys and girls it can be used to prevent the risk of infection with HPV which causes vaginal cancer which can cause cervical cancer which can cause oral cancer anal cancer and several other uh infection related cancers practice safe sex this is very very important and breastfeeding is very essential for at least 6 months not only to boost the immunity of the child but also to prevent breast cancer risk do not use Herbal supplements or hormone supplements or other dietary supplements without consulting with your doctor because these could interact with the treatments your on or it could cause cancer itself get regular Health checkups and screening tests that is very essential in detecting the cancer at a very early stage to cure this deadly disease thank you
