Having your bones deteriorate from osteoporosis is a scary thought, but preventing osteoporosis doesn't have to be difficult.

Step 1: Get educated
Learn if you're at risk. Women are four times as likely to get osteoporosis than men, but men can still get it.

Step 2: Get plenty of calcium
Get enough calcium. Recommended daily intakes are: 800 milligrams for children, 1,300 milligrams for teens, 1,000 milligrams for adults up to age 50, and 1,200 milligrams for people 51 and over. Calcium helps our bones stay strong.

Tip
Good sources of calcium include dairy, sardines, fortified juice and cereal, and leafy greens.

Step 3: Take supplements
If you can't get enough calcium through your diet, take supplements. Be aware, however, that your body can only absorb about 500 milligrams of calcium at a time.

Step 4: Get vitamin D
Get enough vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. Children, teens, and adults up to age 50 need 200 international units per day, while older adults need 400 to 600. You can get vitamin D through sun exposure and certain foods.

Tip
Foods high in vitamin D include salmon, tuna, mackerel, egg yolks, and fortified milk, juice, and cereal.

Step 5: Get lots of exercise
Exercise regularly. Weight-bearing physical activity is especially important, such as walking, jogging, tennis, and dancing.

Step 6: Get tested
As you age, get your bone density tested. Even if you do everything right, genetics also play a role, and early diagnosis is always best.

Did You Know?
The term osteoporosis was coined by French pathologist Jean Lobstein.

  1. Dairy will ruin your bones!!

  2. Hello everyone, wonderful points , i have heard about to prevent osteoporosis please try Renkarter expert osteo report (search google it).it is awesome i have heard from my mate but i forget the exact link so google it .

  3. I like your video! I found Renkarter Expert Osteo Report. It's really helpful!

  4. I very recently was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Have suffered with R.A. for 25 yrs. Also bad back..for abt 15 yrs. Lower lumbar. Only the most painful of my medical problems.

  5. Supplementing with calcium and vitamin d can be dangerous because you GET TOO MUCH CALCIUM IN YOUR BLOOD, and it can't get into your bones so IT GOES INTO YOUR SOFT TISSUE like blood vessels, joints, bone-spurs grow on heel, calcium builds up on heart valves and damage them, you get alligator skin, etc..

If you do take a calcium supplement along with a vitamin d3 pill, then YOU HAD BETTER TAKE Vitamin K2 along with them or you will end UP giving yourself heart disease in say 15 years.

  6. Follow that video and you'll get osteoporosis and HEART DISEASE!

To prevent osteoporosis: eat green vegetables daily like lettuce so that you can get minerals like magnesium which make bones strong and increase BMD, take vitamin k2 so that calcium can end up in your bones and NOT your blood vessels or heart valves…..To see how crucial vitamin k is to bones and heart, google: 'warfarin osteoporosis' or 'warfarin heart disease'

    Note: warfarin Inhibits vitamin k.

  7. funny, people eat a lot of cheese, milk, yogurt, pills, still osteoporosis. But NO, don't eat broccoli/celery/kale/banana/etc. cause they don't do anything. We need to get our calcium from cow titties and pasteurize and homogenize it

  8. You have to distribute your calcium intake and not eat the whole daily intake of 1000 mg at one time, but lets say 500 mg in the morning and 500 mg in the evening.

  9. The approach is very limited. In addition the suggested vitamin D dose in not large enough to raise the circulating vitamin D levels to sufficient level. Adults need about 75 mcg (3000 IU) of vitamin D3 daily.

  10. too much protein in the diet causes calcium to leach out of the bones

  11. it says it at the beginning? HAVING YOUR BONES DETERIORATE

  12. wow a video about Osteoporosis but they dont even tell what it is?

  13. I agree. You can blame the American Dairy Industry. They planted this bullshit by paying off Congress and changing the pyramid. They also got Congress to brainwash our children into providing milk to our kids in our schools. Again as always it's money from special interests that perpetuate this myth. Read the book and NY Times Bestseller, "The China Study" by Campbell it's awesome. It refutes this nonsense.

  14. Look it up, people! This video is perpetuating the myth about calcium. The US has the largest average calcium intake and the HIGHEST rate of osteoporosis in the world!

  15. sigh..my parents have it, time to drink more milk now. 🙁
