working in construction is a great job you get to build something real and earn a good living however there can be a lot of stress on the job that can lead to common mental issues substance misuse and even suicide for construction workers like falling from a roof or being exposed to hazardous chemicals mental health must be addressed just like overall workplace safety construction workers are particularly susceptible to mental health issues and suicide which is a silent killer in construction in fact while approximately one thousand construction workers die on the job site each year about five thousand die by Suicide off the job and while it may not always be obvious half of all construction workers experience a diagnosable mental health problem the impact on employers is significant too when workers are less productive due to poor mental health missing work due to illness and staff turnover foreign mental health includes our emotional psychological and social well-being it affects how people think feel and act and it also helps determine how individuals handle stress relate to others and make choices good mental health is a state of well-being where you feel good and function well in the world you can cope with the normal stresses of Life can work productively and are able to make a positive contribution to your community unfortunately mental health problems like anxiety depression and substance misuse are pervasive in society and on construction job sites there are many factors that contribute to mental health and suicide and the construction industry poses high risks for physical and mental stresses construction workers are especially vulnerable due to stress due to time constraints and high risk work environment exhaustion from long hours and long commutes poor sleep habits spending time away from family and friends Financial burdens from weather cancellations are seasonal unemployment poor physical health including obesity high blood pressure and heart disease chronic physical pain caused by manual labor or injuries use of alcohol or drugs to cope biological factors such as genes or brain chemistry life experiences such as trauma or abuse and family history of mental health problems [Music] it's not always easy to identify if you or one of your co-workers is experiencing signs of mental distress such as anxiety or depression one or more of the following feelings or behaviors can be a warning sign thinking of harming yourself or others eating or sleeping too much or too little withdrawing from people and activities lower no energy and decreased productivity feeling helpless or hopeless smoking drinking or using drugs more than usual severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships yelling or fighting with family and friends and inability to perform daily tasks by ignoring or avoiding this problem we unintentionally prevent employees from seeking help for themselves and their families self-care is critical in maintaining mental health and managing stress taking the time to do the things you enjoy will help improve your physical and mental health get regular exercise eat healthy regular meals stay hydrated make sure you get enough sleep make time for friends and family members find a relaxing activity that you enjoy manage your finances by budgeting and planning call to a health care professional if you're feeling overwhelmed or are experiencing severe or distressing symptoms it's not always obvious when a friend or co-worker is struggling but they often show signs of Suicidal Thoughts in subtle ways but there are ways you can help others such as friends family members or co-workers who may be in crisis learn to recognize the warning signs in others don't ignore it speak up if you're worried show your concern and inquire why they don't seem like themselves respond quickly if you believe your friend or co-worker is in crisis offer help and support talk about it make it part of the safety conversation call The Suicide Prevention Hotline or crisis text line for ideas to help your co-worker and seek help from national and local resources good mental health is critical to healthy productive workers with education and open communication we can help provide a safe working environment for all in the construction industry if you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis help is available call or text 988 or chat 988 lifeline.org if you're thinking about suicide or worried about a friend loved one or co-worker or would like emotional support the lifeline network is available 24 7 across the United States the call is confidential and it's free foreign [Music]

  1. I want a job in construction so that if I do not commit suicide, then I may just do vandalism, because of exactly what I am learning about!. Now it is extremely right to say that I will make absolutely certain that I will prevent obesity by making it a to quit eating food completely, because that will guarantee that you will absolutely never have to worry about obesity, where you drink water, and quit eating food completely!
