MY BEST ANXIETY RELIEF ADVICE
Anxiety is worsened by thinking. The more thinking we do when we are anxious the worse the anxiety gets. To get anxiety relief you need to direct your attention away from thinking and into sensation or feeling.
probably the question that I get asked the most is what's my biggest single tip to help people get over anxiety and I'm gonna give that to you in this video so let's get into it [Music] hi and welcome to the anxiety MD a channel specifically designed to give you expert advice if you're struggling with anxiety now the channel is pretty unique in that it's designed by a medical doctor and a neuroscientist me and it's also designed by someone who's struggled with anxiety most of his life also me so I combined my experience as an anxiety physician anxiety specialist and anxiety patient and I blend those two together and I try and give you the best advice that I can from someone who's actually been there I'm not sitting here saying you should do this and you should do that I'm saying these are the things that have really helped me and my patients get better over the course of time from anxiety so if you're new here please like and subscribe now in this video I'm going to talk about the single biggest thing that people do to make their anxiety worse and that is to think people start thinking and believing that they can think their way out of anxiety now a lot of what anxiety is is this sense of alarm in the body it has very little actually to do with the alarm thoughts so when we get alarm in the body that alarm goes up to our mind in our mind being a compulsive make sense machine it makes sense of this uncomfortable alarm feeling in our body and starts creating all these negative thoughts these worries warnings and worst-case scenarios that just make us worse so what we need to do is discipline ourselves that thinking is not helping and in fact I had a guy come in to see me years ago and he had just lost his wife and he was really distraught he said dr. Kennedy I'm so anxious I've got to dig myself out of this hole and I said well you can't dig yourself out of a hole when you're in a hole you have to stop digging and thinking is digging so what I tried to get him to do was to get into his body to get into the feeling find a sensation breath touch and in fact what I try and get most of my patients to do is create an intention when they feel the anxiety by putting their fourth finger and thumb tip together and create an intention to sit in the sensation of just those fingertips touching nothing else as best they can because what that does is it takes all that mental processing power away and it focuses it on this feeling of sensation and you're also creating an intention you're giving your mind something specific to do that is not ruminating on your negative anxious thoughts because no matter how much you think that thinking is going to help you thinking is digging when you're anxious when you're anxious you lose a part of your brain called the prefrontal cortex this is part of you that does your rational thinking for you and you start thinking with your survival brain so if you imagine being chased by a lion you're not going to be chased by a lion and look over at a tree and go that would be a great tree for a tree fort over there I think I get some two by fours you're not going to do that that doesn't happen so my biggest single tip and I'll expand on this with my youtube series and how to do this is to move away from thinking and into sensation by first creating an intention that you are going to move away from thought and into feeling so this is kind of what it looks like you feel anxious you determined that you're feeling anxious your alarm is up in your body you're starting to think compulsively and then you recognize that and you decide hey I'm gonna make a different program I'm gonna make an intention by putting my thumb and my fourth fingertip together to focus on that sensation I'm gonna take my attention away from these compulsive thoughts and actually make my own intention draw my own path to create this intention that I'm going to stick with sensation and that does two things it calms you because now you're not caught up in this repetitive endless thoughts because your thoughts are endless and you've created a program for your brain to follow because your brain loves programs and if you don't give it a program it will just default back to this compulsive thinking again so you feel yourself tense you feel yourself anxious you put your thumb and fourth fingers together you focus on that sensation and you try and get into that sensation as much as you possibly can now your thoughts are going to try and pull you back but if you can focus on this and this takes some practice over the course of time and that's why I say this is my number one tip is that if you can start learning how to do this learning how to move away from this compulsive thought which is only gigging and it's only gonna make you worse and into a different Avenue a different arena if you change the course of the ship then you can start getting better from anxiety so question of the day what do you do to move into sensation of your body some people do yoga some people do chi gong tell me that in the comments below if there's something you want me to cover as far as your anxiety goes tell me that in the comments below if you like this please like and subscribe because the more subscribers I can get the more I can get my message out there so in the meantime this is dr. In 2011 it was discovered that arthritis strength Tylenol helps it. I had light withdrawal from lortab which would hardly ever take. Trust it it works.

Wow, yes I get the wriggly squirmy tummy sensations and shallow breathing and my mind finds all the things that I am scared of [ and piles them up – don't forget this and don't forget that – it might happen today……. then I get whooshes of fear through my body….Wow! I've never dissected it before. – Ok finger and thumb together – easy to remember. thank you.
I just found you on Mel Robbins. I am looking forward to conquering my anxiety.
I've been suffering from anxiety and panic attacks for about 3 years now, I absolutely refuse to take medication. I was completely anxiety free for the first 25 years of my life. I believe there's a remedy that doesn't include drugs. Thank you for the tip, I will try this next time.
Its easy if im not hurting.. my Digestion problems triggers
I have a panic Attack
I use the mammalian dive reflex exercise to derail sudden, overwhelming anxiety in a situation that is NOT actually dangerous. I know I am actually safe but I FEEL threatened, sometimes even when awakening from a deep sleep due to a dream or I feel anxious for some other reason, which happens to me often. I am not a scientist, but I have learned this technique from professionals. I keep a large ziplock bag of ice in my freezer. If anxiety strikes, I place the bag on my face and hold it firmly in place, leaving room for nostrils to inhale to a count of four, bear down and hold the breath several seconds, then slowly exhale to a count of eight or longer through pursed lips or closed teeth, making a sound like the hiss of a deflating balloon. Repeat ten times, focusing especially on a long, calm exhale. It works to calm down the vagas nerve, which extends from brain stem to lower abdomen. It is amazingly effective for calming down in a crisis. If you don’t have a bag of ice, stick your face in a basin of cold water. The anxious person should control the application of cold, the inhale and the exhale. Never force it on someone else or “dunk” someone else. The mind shifts from the anxiety to counting and breathing. It’s amazingly effective at calming a panic attack when there is really NO reason to be afraid.
isn't it interesting that western civilization is so technologically advanced yet at the same time people are completely lost, disconnected and shaky?
Dr Kennedy – I wanted to find your step by step as Mel Robbins wouldn't let you speak! But I am interested in your heal your body idea. Does this also work for phobias?
Psychedelic mushrooms completely helped me get out of addiction and depression. It totally rewired my mind. Honestly, they worked better than antidepressants.
Why the fourth finger? Just because it's unusual to connect those two and it takes some focus?

And also was hooked on drugs at the age 14. I started with weed around 12. And the drugs was my way of escaping. And now my life is awesome. I’m still addicted to nicotine but haven’t used drugs in along time. But my anxiety which mainly stems from health anxiety. And I’m 42 years old now. And still dealing with my younger self.
