OSHO: Meditation Needs No Technique

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MEDITATE WITHOUT ANY TECHNIQUE?
“…the question you have asked is certainly of great importance because meditation, as such, needs no technique at all. But techniques are needed to remove the obstacles in the way of meditation. So it has to be understood very clearly: meditation itself needs no techniques, it is a simple understanding, an alertness, an awareness. Neither alertness is a technique, nor awareness is a technique.” Osho

Is it possible to meditate without any technique? The question you have asked is certainly of great importance because meditation as such needs no technique at all. But techniques are needed to remove the obstacles in the way of meditation. So it has to be understood very clearly meditation itself needs no techniques. It is a simple understanding an alertness, an awareness. Neither alertness is a technique
nor awareness is a technique. But on the way to be alert there are so many obstacles. For centuries man has been gathering those obstacles. They are needed to be removed. Meditation itself cannot remove them. Certain techniques are needed to remove them. So the work of the techniques is just to prepare the ground, is just to prepare the way, the passage. The techniques in themselves are not meditation. If you stop at the technique you have missed the point. J. Krishnamurti in his whole life was insisting that there is no technique for meditation. And the total result was not that millions of
people attained to meditation. The total result was that millions of people became convinced that no technique is needed for meditation. But they forgot all about what they are going to do with
the obstructions, hindrances. So they remained intellectually convinced that no technique is needed. I have met many followers of J. Krishnamurti, very intimate ones, and I have asked them, “No technique is needed – I agree absolutely. But has meditation happened to you or to anyone else who has been listening to J. Krishnamurti?” Although what he is saying is essentially true, but he is saying only the
positive side of the experience. There is a negative side also and for that negative side all kinds of techniques are needed, are absolutely needed because unless the grounded is well prepared, and all the weeds and wild roots are taken away from the ground you cannot grow roses and other beautiful flowers. Roses in no way are concerned with those roots, with the wild plants that you have removed. But the removal of those weeds was absolutely necessary for the ground to be in a right situation where roses can blossom. You are asking, “Is it possible to meditate without any technique? It is not only possible it is the only possibility. No technique is needed at all as far as meditation is concerned. But what you are going to do with your mind your mind will create thousand and one difficulties. Those techniques are needed to remove the mind from the way, to create a space in which mind
becomes quiet, silent, almost absent. Then meditation happens on its own
accord. It is not a question of technique. You don't have to do anything. Meditation is something natural. Something that is already hidden inside you and is trying to find its way to reach to the open sky, to the sun, to the air, but mind is surrounding it from all sides; all doors are closed, all windows are closed the techniques are needed to open the windows, to open the doors and immediately the whole sky is available to you with all its stars, with all its beauty, with all its sunsets, with all its sunrises. Just a small window was preventing you. Just a small piece of straw can go into your eye and it will prevent you from seeing the vast sky because you cannot open your eyes. It is absolutely illogical that just small pieces of straw or sand can prevent you from seeing the great stars, the infinite sky. But in fact they can – they do. Techniques are needed to remove
those straws, those pieces of sand, from your eyes. And meditation is your nature, is your very potential. Hymie Goldberg was visiting his friend Mr.Cohen, who was dying. “Do us a favor,” said Hymie Goldberg, “when you go to heaven could you find a way of letting me know whether they play baseball up there?” Mr.Cohen said he would certainly try to contact his old friend if at all possible. Only a few days after Mr.Cohen died Hymie Goldberg had a phone call. “Hello, Hymie,” said Mr. Cohen. “It is your old friend here.” “Cohen? Is it really you?” asked Hymie. “Sure,” answered his friend. “I have some good news and some bad news. First, there sure is baseball in heaven. And the bad news is that you are pitching next Sunday.” Life is a complicated affair. There are good news and there are bad news. Good news is that there is no need of any technique. But the bad news is without any technique you are not going to get it.

  12. I have listened to krishnamurti for some time (not always directly but via friends that were his followers and we would discuss) but something about him never fullyyy resonated with me. I am not saying he is wrong, there is some sort of peace/resonance lacking within his teachings that makes me feel like I do not have the whole picture. He is a nice stepping stone for raising those initial questions and curiosity if you come from a very tormented mind. Like his followers tend to be highly intellectual people and chronic "overthinkers." When I listen to him I find myself in deeper thought instead of the silence of liberation lol I was never able to express this sore of feeling because I could not exactly place why his talks didn't click for me and my friends were quite adamant about how fully correct he is there was no room for me to express my disconnect. They were also quite tormented still despite knowing/quoting his talks, now that I recall. I think when we have full resonance then our life will naturally reflect that meditative inner knowing (not intellectual knowing)

  13. He has no rush, my whole body cooles down as I for the first time listen to this old man talk for fourteen minutes. All words are choosen with great deliberation and concern. His voice is absolutely mesmerising. He seems to be at peace with his mind. I am very inspired after hearing this. I am inspired to try to meditate. I am inspired to talk less, but say more. Thank you, Osho.

  14. I “accidentally”, or rather unknowingly used meditation when I was a teenager, beginning at age 13. This was due to physical pain, and it was the early 1980s where we didn’t regularly take or even keep Tylenol, aspirin, or any medicines in our house, we only bought it if needed in extreme circumstances – and this was when, as I soon found out, that Advil had recently become available iver the counter (that’s what my doctor told us, it was the first time I’d ever heard of or seen Advil before).

I didn’t even tell my Mom about it, at first, she only found out because my pain affected my ability to function the first 2 days of my periods. Every month during menstruation, the pain was so severe that I’d have to close myself in my bedroom, lay very, very still, avoid noise, so I could get to a state where I could deal with my pain & nausea. This lasted 1.5 days every month. Cramps of my abdominal muscles, similar to labor, would come in waves, and when I focused, I could deal with them better.

I realized that when I kept still, both physically & mentally, I could focus enough to deal with the pain – but when I did NOT, things only got worse, I could not deal with the pain if I was distracted – if I heard a noise, like if someone opened my bedroom door, or if I lost concentration, or if I tried to do anything besides lay still in bed, I’d end up screaming & crying.

I quickly learned to stare at a spot on the wall to focus my mind – no one told me this, but many years later I heard that people would stare at a point on the wall to focus their mind.

What I was doing was removing distractions, both material (like physical noises & avoiding people) & mental (not allowing any thoughts by focusing my mind on a blank spot on the wall). These are the “techniques” he speaks about here – not a technique to meditate, but to make it easier to meditate since I had no knowledge of, no training or practice in meditation.

About 1 year into this, my Mom took me to the doctor because the pain was so severe – that’s when my doctor told us about a new, OTC medicine (that you could previously only get via RX) called “Advil” (ibuprofen), and he gave me a sample from his office.

I took the Advil, but I usually threw it up because my pain was so bad the first day of my period that I’d throw up anything I ate or drank – so it didn’t seem to work for me then, so I continued to do what I always did, but I didn’t have a name for it and didn’t even wonder, it was just a natural response- I knew that I’d need to stay home from school the first 2 days of my period every month, and that continued until I was in my early 20s.

I was able to somewhat control both my body & mind with meditation, because IF I didn’t, both my body & mind would get out of control, controlling my emotions helped just as much or more than controlling my body to make the cramps less severe, because when I gave to much attention to thoughts & emotions, it was like adding fuel to a fire, so that’s why I had to focus, to keep thoughts away (thoughts like “this is intolerable” or “I’m missing things I want to do at school like band, chorus, and track”) as those thoughts made it worse and also made me lose concentration on dealing with the physical pain.

  32. don't comment this much just listen

  33. don't comment this much just listen

  34. Forgot all about Dre

  35. Not true! J. Krishnamurti ALWAYS said that in order to meditate, you have to PREPARE the mind first: to understand fear, sorrow, desire and pleasure. If all these are not understood, meditation will be merely an illusion. These are the words of J. Krishnamurty says. There is NO TECHNIQUE to understand fear, sorrow and desire. Any technique is mechanical.
