I am um going to be going live periodically throughout the month just to share a bit of information about mental health um and topics pertaining to specifically pertaining to high achievers uh managing the corporate world. So if that is you, I welcome you to uh join us for our lives as we will be going live again um periodically throughout this month. The best way to know when I will be going live is to subscribe to my YouTube channel and to turn on the notification bell. That way you will know exactly when I'm going live. Um, before we jump in, also be sure to give this video a like if you like it. That will help um with the YouTube algorithm and it'll help get more eyes on this video. Um, it also helped me to grow my channel, just to be quite honest. Um, where is that that I was looking for? Here. Okay, there it is. Okay, here we go. Here we go. Um, okay. So, my name is again, my name is Janetta Garrison. I'm a licensed therapist. My my um I'm also an EMDR trained therapist and a certified anxiety treatment professional. My specialty is helping high achieving professionals learn to calm their brain in the way. Um so today's topic we'll be talking about time management strategies for busy high achievers as we know um as a high achiever myself there is a lot to be done our minds are sort of like always going always going and um the to-do list is ever growing ever growing so I thought that it would be a good idea to start with just some practical ical time management strategies that you can use starting today. Um, if you identify as a high achiever, even if you don't identify as a high achiever, I think these tips will be helpful for anyone. So, our first tip is to be strategic. Be strategic by creating a plan. Now, a plan is going to be different from a to-do list. A to-do list is where, you know, you do sort of this like brain dump where you just write down all the things that you need to get done and the list is always growing somehow. You know, even when you check something off the list, it continues continues to grow. So, our first tip is to be strategic by creating a plan. Now, what does that plan look like? I invite you to instead of creating a to-do list, create a success list. What is a success list? So, I learned about the success list concept from a book called the one thing. And the premise of the book is essentially to to discover what is the one thing that you can do today such by doing it it will make all the other things on your to-do list either easier or unnecessary. So again let's start with the question again. What is the one thing that you can do such by doing it, it will make all the other items on your list either unnecessary or easier? Think about the domino effect. What is the first domino that you can knock down and then by you knocking down that first domino, it'll have um a lasting effect and knock down other the other subsequent dominoes. So this means again creating a plan. Um instead of just being random with I'm going to start my day and just kind of do whatever pops into my head. Start your day by creating creating a plan for your day. Telling your plan where you're going to spend your time as opposed to the tasks telling you where you will direct your time. Okay. The second tip is to be judicious with your yeses. Think about your yeses for the day as you having a limited supply. You have a limited supply of your yeses for today. That means everybody can't get a yes. Everyone will not get a yes. That's not going to be possible. So when you think about um uh who gets a yes, who or what gets a yes, you know, here are some questions that you can ask to determine um you know whether or not to say yes to something. One question, do I actually want to do this? Do I want to do the thing that I am being asked to do? Do I want to attend the event or the function that I'm being asked um to attend that I'm being invited to? Do I want want to do it? Right. Second thing is, do I have the capacity? Do I have the capacity to do this thing? If I say yes, do I have the capacity to do that? Capacity by capacity I mean do you have the time, the energy, the resources, you know, do you have the capacity, the space in your schedule? Do you have the capacity to do this potential thing that um someone is asking you to do or that you've been invited to participate in? Um and the next part of that being judicious with your yeses is is this task better suited for another person or another role? You know, you may have a lot of information in your head. You're good at a lot of things. Baseline, your baseline is excellent, right? We know that. We know that. But does that also mean that you have to take on all the things that sort of lie in front of you, right? Do you have to grab on to every single thing that comes your way? Maybe, maybe not. Right? It's just something again being judicious with your yeses means being um intentional and thinking about what you're going to do and how it will impact you before you just sort of mindlessly or by habit jump in and do it. And um the final part of that is ask yourself if I say yes to this, what am I saying no to? Right? What am I saying no to by saying yes to this? And that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. It's just a question to consider so that you can bring it to your consciousness, bring it to your awareness, and be intentional with your yeses. So for example, um you could say, “Okay, yes, sure. I will um I will take on that uh extra assignment. I'll take on that project. Sure, I'll take on that project and take the lead on that. Right? By saying yes to that, perhaps that means that you're going to have less free time. You know, maybe less free time in the evenings after work to do do things with friends, family, things like that, right? Or another example could be um a friend invites you to go to um go to workout with them. You know, go to workout with them, go to the gym, go to a yoga class, a Zumba class, whatever your jam is, right? Go hiking with them. And that could be something that you really really actually you want to do. You have the time to do it. You're energized by it. You really you really want to do it. So, you want to say yes. But what would you be seeing saying no to? Well, you're saying no to um perhaps uh you know taking a nap at that time that you were that you're going to spend at the gym or working out or hanging out with that friend. And that's okay. Again, the idea is simply for you to think about it and make conscious intentional decisions um with your yeses. Okay. The next tip is the next and final tip is to delegate. Delegate, delegate, delegate. You know, there are a lot of things out there that need to be done. A lot of things um you know, particularly if you're working on a team, there are a lot of things that may come up that um may need to be completed or or worked on, you know, but it's okay for you to delegate. You know, going back to that previous question of yes, things need to be done, but do they need to be done by you? Right? So, it's okay to delegate. Um, this requires trust. This requires trust in the person that you're delegating the activity to. And this is maybe a little bit of a tangent, but if there is a person, say you have an assistant, right? Say you have an assistant and you end up doing all the things because you don't trust your assistant's capabilities. Then maybe that's a uh something to look at, right? Whether it's the assistant needs more training or um you haven't clearly explained what it is that you're looking for. So that means that you always end up micromanaging or doubling back or you know things like that, you know. So um the first thought is to delegate. So you can delegate to a person right you delegate to a person and again once you delegate you have to take your hands off of it. You can't micromanage because then you're spending time doing the things that are on your plate and you're spending time and mental energy focused on the things that you've delegated out. So once you delegate, you have to take your hands off of it, right? Um so you can delegate to another person. The other piece is that you can delegate to a piece of tech. We live in an age where there is software for that can do so many things. There is software that can do so many things. There are software um tech, there's like tech, there's apps, there's so many things that are popping up weekly it seems. that um can make a task so much lighter that can give you back your time essentially. And you may not be aware of what all the all the tech that's out there. So, it's okay to ask. It's okay to ask people like, “Hey, do you know of like a piece of software, an app that can help with this?” um you know so it's okay to delegate to either a person or de delegate to tech to a piece of software um a person you know a s a story for my life at one point in my life I had a job as an executive assistant and one of my roles was or one of my responsibilities was to put together a training manual for uh my respon one of the responsibilities that I had to do so what that means this way way back in the day. So what that means is I had to essentially do screen prints of each screen that I interacted with in the process. Do a screen print in color and um type out the the steps. Step one, go to this screen, do this. Step two, click here and insert like arrows, circles, highlights, things like that. Now, there's technology out there that all you have to do is install it in your computer or a browser extension or whatever, however it works, depending on the piece of software that you have. And um you just install it, you hit go, and you do the task. And so when you're finished with the task, the software will capture everything that you did through video screenshots and it will write out the steps. Step one, step two. It will just automatically do that. So there is no extra time that you would need to devote to doing something like that. It's already done it. By the time you've done you've finished with the activity, the tech has finished with uh mirroring what you did and created its plan. So again, think about, you know, can I delegate this activity out to either another person or a piece of technology. So those are the tips that I have for today. I wanted to keep this um intro just a little brief to get a feel for it. I invite you again to subscribe and turn on the notification bell over on YouTube. Um, I'll live stream into my different channels such as YouTube, LinkedIn, um, Instagram, but if you subscribe and turn on the notification bell in YouTube, you'll get the notification instantly and you'll know exactly when I go live.
