What's one of the absolute biggest wastes of time in the gym? Ab workouts. It's the typical “six pack ab routines” you see all over social media where you cycle through a bunch of high rep body weight ab exercises for 10 to 15 minutes. Keep in mind that it's not possible to spot reduce fat, and so these six pack ab workouts won't do anything in terms of specifically leaning down your midsection. All they really do is work the abdominal muscles underneath. But since the abs are a muscle just like any other (no different from your chest or quads or biceps), they should be trained for strength and hypertrophy in exactly the same way. That means selecting abdominal exercises where you can apply enough resistance to get within a few reps of failure, taking a proper rest period in between sets and applying progressive overload over time. This will increase the development of your abs, causing them to pop out a bit more noticeably assuming your body fat levels are low enough for them to visible. But just remember that having sufficiently low body fat is the ultimate key to a “defined” midsection, and that is achieved through a calorie deficit rather than ab exercises.

should you be training abs every single day if you want to have a visible six-pack well in my opinion no first of all you need to be aware of the fact that if your body fat percentage is not low enough then you're not going to see them anyway no matter how hard you train them second point my recommendation would be to actually treat them as if they're any other muscle group so train them maybe once twice per week that's actually one of the biggest mistakes people make in the gym they think that doing some 15-minute ab shredding workout they saw online is the key to a lean mid-section when in reality you can't spot reduce fat and it really just comes down to being in an overall calorie deficit the only purpose for ab training from an aesthetic standpoint is to build the actual abdominal muscles and since the abs are a muscle just like any other they should be trained for hypertrophy in the same way not through some high rep circuit style ab routine but by selecting exercises where you can get within a few reps of failure taking proper rest periods and applying progressive overload so i do agree with mike here subscribe for more no bs fitness tips

  2. So yes, ab workouts are pointless, so you should work out your abs?! Love the clear language👌

  3. agree with mike… so the whole point of making this video was to show that everyone except athleanX is correct.

  4. Do what ever works for you brothers, you don't need to suffer just to have abs, as long as you are doing something for yourself you should be happy, we are not fitness influencers, we are regular people, we train for ourselfs 👍👍👍

  5. I never saw him agree with anyone before

  6. He his just jealous because the guy he is reacting too is more handsome 😂😂😂😂

  7. don’t know why but there is reeeeeally a lot of genetics in how much your abs pops out!!
yes… everything about bodybuilding is genetic…. but abs visibility is insanely determined by genetics!! i would say it’s more important than fat. meaning: someone can see a sixpack at 17/18%; someone cannot see at 11/12%

  8. The way you presented this sounded like you disagreed at first lmao

  9. Why the fuck did you make this video when you pretty much repeat exactly what the original guy said lmfao

  10. Almost EVERY exercise, if done correctly, is an abdominal exercise! Even walking! 😎

  11. Meditate and listen to metabolism subliminals and you eat whatever you want. Your subconscious mind listens to your commands.

  12. Mike uses special juice and you do need to workout the abs as it is a muscle group – p.s. stay away from special juice

  13. What do you mean treat them like, they are a whole different muscle group

  14. Love your common sense vids.

  15. Ab circuits are the high rep, high intensity counterpart to lower rep, higher resistance training. Which has been shown to create similar results, as long as you're taking the high reps to literal failure.

I would say that the recovery time of abs is much shorter than larger muscle groups, so training them every lift day is okay and ideal. Although arguably, not needed.

  16. RECORD SCRATCH
Sean: "Let me interrupt this guy to agree
    with this guy."

  17. Mike Thurston is one of the most decent gym influencers
Been following his content since 2017
He is genuine and I have rarely seen him give a bad workout tip.

  18. Never have I heard some1 saying don't train your arms because you can't see them since you are overweight, why is it though people say it for abs eventhough core might be the most important muscle group for humans

  19. he said the said things you estrogen induced miss biology prof

  20. been thin for decades by nature, 3 years of working out no abs still, until I started doing 500 situps a day my build was not cool and i had no abs.

  21. the record scratch transition and leading off with “this is the most common mistake people make” made it sound like he was disagreeing at first

  22. i have visible abs and my body fat percentage is 25%
so not expecting them to pop out if your body percentage is not at a certain point is BS

  23. Bruce lee trained his abs daily.

  24. its a lie, i have been training my single ab for many years with multiple meals a day, its still growing strong

  25. The problem with ab training is , if you dont have low body fat, training them and making them bigger under the fat makes you look fatter

  26. Actually it's good to train them. They'll show through at a higher body fat. And even if you're too fat to see them, you'll have better core stability.

  27. More muscle and bigger muscles is good why? Because it burns more fat leading to becoming leaner faster, I know this from my own experience, I eat more protein and built new muscle which speed up getting leaner, I just really wish I cut out alcohol completely much sooner, that really was a game changer for me

  28. Sean haven’t always agreed with everything you say but you’ve been sharing some great information and advice lately. Kudos for you for helping the up and comers.

  29. So whats the best ab workouts?

  30. Makes sense, you and Mike both talk sense, keep up the good genuine content dude 😎 💪🏼💪🏼

  31. Personally I just run. It counts as core training to me at some point. In fact my legs rarely get tired. It's my core and heart that fails me

  32. It's kind of weird that he opened up with "here's a common mistake people make" but he was actually referring to the question Mike posted, which meant not only Mike was right, but all the clips shown in there were not wrong.

  33. Just love the low key jabs at VScam and Jeff Cavaliere 😂

  34. Good to see the return of resident clown Vshred

  35. Abs are a supporting muscle however, if you do certain sports you want to have them strong. You can do them every day if you like or once or twice a week

  36. to look great (including having a 6-pack) – train all muscles more or less equally, and get/stay lean. Start with something like 3ish sets of 10ish reps until failure or close to failure for all muscles, twice per week – shimples

  37. Being that I have had a lot back problems and a massive back surgery I started doing exercises that prevent the spine from bending and flexing, and I’ve gotten insane abs from that. Much better results than from training them like any other muscle group. Doing side planks, dead bugs, suitcase carries, around the world with a kettlebell, bird-dog, farmers walks with uneven weights etc have given me great core stability and great abs. So do what works for you🤷.

  38. Lose weight and abs will show by themselves 😂

  39. Im not a guru, I'm not a coach, I'm not a fitness expert. All that said, this is what seems to work for me regarding an ab workout. This is part of a calisthenics routine I do on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays:

    5x 15 sit-ups (I use a 12lb med ball)
5x 60 Russian twists (also use 12lb med ball)

I do have a 6 pack from doing this, but I'm also 6'1, 160 so my musculature fills pretty naturally

I also do a good deal of push-ups. Push-ups don't inherently work abs, although they do engage the core and help you train to keep it tight

  40. Who the fuck to believe? Everyone’s a damn expert!

  41. My experience. Yes you cant spot reduce and need bf to be low enough to see abs. But I’ve dieted with no ab work and dieted with doing abs every day and there was a huge difference once my bf went down mid section was 10 times better looking with doing ab workouts.

  42. I did jeffs 7 min beginner workout for abbs the last year and my abbs are showing. I also do 30 min cardio a day with kicking a knees but thats all i do for abbs.
