Does CBD Improve Mental Health?
CBD is so hot right now. The compound is being added to everything from gummies to lattes, attached to claims about how it can improve health in any number of ways. But what do we really know about the validity of those claims? And what are we actually getting in consumer CBD products?

#healthcaretriage #CBD #cannabinoid
cbd is a big buzzword in health circles these days and survey data indicate that people are using it for a variety of issues including mental health but how much do we really know about cbd and mental health that's the topic of this week's healthcare triage cannabidiol or cbd is one of the most well-known components of marijuana and is not psychoactive like its thc counterpart it has been touted as a treatment for almost any mental health condition you can think of but the overall evidence for this in humans is pretty scant beyond that the evidence we do have suggests that effects are isolated to doses far higher than not seen in commercial products but to the research a systematic review and meta-analysis published towards the end of 2019 was only able to find a small handful of studies examining the effects of pharmaceutical grade cbd on mental health and the majority of the evidence was rated as low quality the authors were unable to find any rcts in the effect of cbd on depression adhd tourette syndrome or ptsd they did include two studies on cbd and anxiety finding no reduction of symptoms in individuals with an anxiety disorder in the realm of mental health the bulk of cbd work has been conducted in relation to anxiety and there is a small but not robust amount of evidence in favor of an effect in a 2017 study a total of 60 participants were randomly assigned to either placebo the anxiety medication clonazepam or one of three doses of cbd 100 300 or 900 milligrams anxiety was then induced by a public speaking task and subjective and objective measures of anxiety were taken at baseline before during and after the speech subjective anxiety scores as well as heart rate and blood pressure were all increased by the public speaking task compared to placebo the clonazepam group had lower subjective anxiety scores during and after the speech and the same was true for the 300 mg cbd group but only after the speech this has led some scientists to conclude that cbd dosing may be subject to what we call the inverted u-shaped dose effect curve or what some researchers like to call the goldilocks effect too little or too much in this case the 100 or 900 milligram doses doesn't show an effect but somewhere in the middle in this case the 300 milligram dose is just right while that could definitely be the case we think these results suggest that we need more studies with way more participants to understand what it all means besides they're only being around 12 people per group there's a lot left to speculate about here cbd even at the goldilocks dose didn't alleviate self-reported anxiety before or during the speech and unlike clonazepam it didn't alleviate objective measures of anxiety like increased blood pressure there are a few similar human studies but with many of the same caveats and many don't include a plasma measure this is a big one because it tells us how much of the drug entered circulation and was thus able to have an active effect cbd has pretty low bioavailability especially when taken by mouth meaning very little of what you take actually ends up being able to do anything so now coming back to that meta-analysis we started with it did report evidence that a 1 000 milligram dose of cbd helped to alleviate some but not all symptoms of schizophrenia when taken alongside existing antipsychotic medication however a very similar trial found no effect at a dose of 600 milligrams looking at the effect of cbd alone a 2012 randomized controlled trial compared outcomes between schizophrenic patients taking cbd or amisulpride a medication commonly used to treat schizophrenia finding that treatment with 800 milligrams of cbd led to the same improvements as amisulpride but with fewer side effects this is great but the trial is far too small only a total of 42 patients to draw any grand inferences so the data we have in humans so far is mixed and though it appears to lean in the direction of little to no effect of cbd on mental health most of it is pretty low quality so we're in no shape to come down on either side also note that a 300 milligram dose of cbd the lowest amount shown to be effective in studies with positive results can be hard to come by in a commercial product for example a bottle of gummies may list 500 milligrams of cbd but this is per bottle so a bottle of 50 gummies gets you 10 milligrams per gummy meaning you have to eat 30 gummies in one sitting to get a possibly effective dose giving you less than two doses per bottle for cbd oil a 1 000 milligram bottle containing 50 milliliters translates to 20 milligrams of cbd per milliliter so you'd need 15 milliliters for a 300 milligram dose meaning that bottle would only provide you around three doses this can get pretty expensive pretty quickly and that's assuming you're actually getting the amount of cbd listed on the label on occasions where the fda has had reason to test the chemical content of these products they've often found that many do not contain the level of cbd being claimed on the label and of course the amount of cbd absorbed by your body may vary based on many factors like diet and the form in which the drug is administered beyond this because these products aren't generally regulated by the fda some can contain a fair amount of thc or even other contaminants making it hard to know where any perceived effects could be coming from but a lot of people insist that these products make a big difference while we can't say for sure it is reasonable to suggest that some of it might be placebo effect a study published this year found that participants who were given cbd free oil but told they were being given cbd showed improvements in heart rate variability and subjective sedation and participants with previously held beliefs about cbd being effective for anxiety self-reported anxiety was significantly lower the trial was small it didn't have a cbd condition for comparison but there you have it we certainly aren't against any placebo effect that makes someone feel better but we do recommend talking to your doctor about taking cbd especially if you're taking other medications because evidence suggests that it can inhibit some drug metabolizing enzymes this could mean that like grapefruit and st john's wort it might be dangerous in combination with certain drugs so that's where we're at with the data on cbd and mental health join us next week for a look at the data on cbd and other ailments including seizures pain addiction and sleep issues page enjoy this New strains of cannabis are harmful and responsible for an increasing wave of psychosis. Those in this industry are OUT OF CONTROL. The highest incidence of psychosis in ERs globally is now CANNSBIS induced- not tik not opiods not crack – weed.
Who funded this so called research 😊 .
You need to take at least 100-300 mg per day for good results
Bull crap, cbd is God's wonderdrug
I am not an MD but do hold an MS in Psychology. While I am a CBD fan and have experienced some improvement in acute anxiety symptoms, we know that personal anecdotal experience is the least defensible data. I believe you have over generalized your statements here. There is actually very little to no “quality” research (including the one you mentioned around public speaking which had a pitiful sample size). Many “studies” get published but as a person of science, we must critically examine the methodology of the research. Much larger studies need to be done around CBD. Having said that, the evidence around cbd and epilepsy has been sound. We need to be cautionary as professionals not to buy into the “snake oil” effect and avoid catchy research headlines. As you probably know, real science isn’t as sexy as a these “initial research” articles. Thanks for posting this. Lets keep the convo going 🙂
The government got to chill the f out and let people really figure out if this stuff helps.
I’m thinking of starting this to cure my stress and depression Luis my back pain. Can u take it everyday or is it like one gummy or pill as needed (every other day.. every 2 days)
Just asking
CBD is the only thing that helps me with my back pain. And also inner stress, It's the best! I highly recommend it. 🙂
I have sciatica and take 70mg per day, it definitely helps with the inflammation, but hasn’t cured it.
However, it does seem to help my ADD, which is a nice bonus
Were and how do Life Long schizophrenic patients go for volunteer research collages institutes how do you find clinical research facility's
studies are fake
so I'm 23 and have severe spinal nerve pain , aside from the strong opiates I take I have just started cbd
again after a long time. I vaporize some pretty potent cbd hash. does not kill my pain but it's definitely relaxing.
I have taken full spectrum cbd, (isolate doesn't work for me) on and off for years for anxious depression. Im significantly better with it. I was taking many supplements, so I didn't know what was helpful. It is definitely the cbd and curcumin. Hope this helps someone.
25mg prevents me from getting butterflies before and during public speaking and helps me stay asleep longer. I don't care what any study says because I'm that guy who is always trying things and being like "i don't feel anything". With CBD I am certain of these effects for me.
WRONG!! CBD Isolate is what the doctors use which is inferior or way less effective compared to the whole plant or the complete genetic code of the plant.
CBD Isolate is 1 compound
Hemp Paste has 550 compounds.
God or Mother Nature created the whole plant and CBD Isolate or CBD oil is incomplete. HempPaste is the ONLY way to go. This video is not helpful as Doctors use Isolate.
Cbd works great for my anxiety and ocd I get intrusive thoughts and it helps ease my mind
Navigating the regulatory landscape in the CBD industry can be complex, but it's reassuring to know that companies like MidnightCBD prioritize compliance and transparency. Their adherence to regulatory standards instills confidence in their products' safety and efficacy.
Another question is how much cbd the liver can tolerate without toxicity.
This is sort of a typical doctor answer you'll get. Just like GMO's are good for you and processed food isn't so bad. It's too bad our government is in bed with the industrial agricultural factory farms and big pharma. Maybe then we'd have some real evidence of cures for illnesses, not just medications to cover up the problem (which allows a cycle of illness that big pharma loves). All I know is CBD works wonders for my anxiety and my sleep.
I have a severe anxiety disorder where it causes waves of burning electrical shocks to wave through my body in floods….. Doctors would never tell me what it was and never could help me get rid of it,, it was painful.. I tried CBD flower and immediately those things went away I still have anxiety but I don't have the pain associated with it..
I’ve been on CBD oil for a few months for refractory anxiety, depression and chronic pain and it has done absolutely nothing. Literally nothing.
I’ve tried two different oils, too. Both prescribed by a cannabis doctor.
It does seem to have perhaps slightly worsened my anxiety though, so I’m not going to continue with it.
I don’t get all the hype!
Got me off alcohol, drugs.
When use cbd only placebo. When use thc, but not heavy and clean i sleep good, eat a lot, pain lose in 10 minutes, every breath disease off. Difference are in my body. But in my Country if the people stay good is a problem.
Just smoke it. It’s pretty much legal most places now.
So what there are not enough studies. We were told that a vaccine that had only a year research would save us all so Im willing to believe that it is effective in what is being claimed to help with.
The lie….this is why they dont do any proper research…..? What does that tell you…?
In my experience the dosage of CBD has to be large in order to be effective. If you don’t buy it in it’s powered extract form then it is too expensive for many people. It does help with anxiety, inflammation, sleep for sure, but the dosage is likely 300mg a day at minimum. For good sleep I use about this much, with some reishi mushroom from real mushrooms, Apigenin, and occasionally use Ashwagandha( either KSM-66 or Sensoril is even better), along with l Theanine
I refuse to trust anyone and their findings that push vaccines or the climate change agenda , as this channel does.
Absolutely especially with a splash of thc
Good video but surprised there was no mention of the 2019 Meta- Analysis and Meta Regression analysis that actually found a larger effect than placebo.
"Effects of Cannabinoid Administration for Pain: A Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression" 2019
Results found;
"In this meta-analytic study, we coalesced results from peer-reviewed primary research articles that characterized cannabinoid- and placebo-induced reductions of subjective pain ratings across medical conditions. Our findings extend current understanding about cannabinoids and pain, taking a meta-regression approach to examine relationships between various study-level characteristics and drug-induced pain reductions. When considering reductions in self-reported pain, we observed that cannabinoid administration was associated with a ‘medium-to-large’ (Cohen, 1988) pooled effect size across included studies. Importantly, cannabinoid administration was associated with statistically significant greater pain reduction than placebo administration, which yielded a ‘small-to-medium’ (Cohen, 1988) pooled effect size"
"Finally, results from our meta-regression analysis suggested that, when controlling for other explanatory variables, drug administration conditions and sample size predicted observed pain reduction. Taken together, these meta-analytic outcomes provide some evidence that cannabinoids, relative to placebo, might mitigate subjective pain reporting among those experiencing chronic pain tied to various medical conditions."
I think this definitely should of been mentioned in the first section of the video.
A mere 30mg does wonders for me.
I've heard so many wonderful things about magic mushrooms but I can't easily get some, Is there any realiable source I can purchase from??
Half of the nation of my little Britain suffering from depression medical cbd do work but evil government do private treatment clinics open to make money around united Kingdom should be on NHS not on private
Well, I tried three types of gummies. They did nothing to me. I tried th water soluble in the morning coffee and it keeps me calm. I use the oil tincture at night and it helps me sleep 7 hours. I am using Sunmed. Expensive, but overall I am seeing that it takes the edge off my anxiety
I take CBD for arthritis and sleep and it helps there's no doubt I get a sleep for7 hours and I take a rice grain on a biscuit and that's me sorted
