[Music] Hey everybody, Jack Scalani. It's the Cooking with Jack show. My friend, I met you at church. Yes. Sher Texler. And as soon as I found out she was uh into nutrition and health and wellness and all that good stuff and I'm not, I thought I'd bring her on the show to help me out with um what are we doing? Like healthy snacks. Healthy snacks, right? For work and on the go, right? Yep. Okay. But I'm going to have her explain her title first cuz I couldn't memorize it. I seriously tried. Um so your title and training. Okay. I have a master of education in health promotion and I'm a personal trainer through ACE American Council on Exercise and also I have a nutrition specialist through AASDN. Cool. So you would be like do you do like physical training too or only? I do. I do personal training, health coaching, wellness workshops. Yep. Wow. Okay. So this is the person and here's what we're going to do. Uh we're going to discuss just some healthy snacks. Any questions you have, leave down below and she'll be perusing all the comments. Okay, but I want to get into this. We have a lot to cover. Uh the first thing I want to do is talk about um vegetarian and vegan. Are you're obviously familiar with both those categories. We have a huge audience and a lot of them don't know the difference. Oh. Um correct me if I'm wrong. Okay. Vegetarians don't eat meat, right, or skin or flesh or none of that and that's it. But they will eat byproducts of animals. Yes. Okay. And vegans don't eat anything have to do with meat. Don't wear leather. Don't anything that harms an animal or uses any part of the animal they have nothing to do with. Correct. Okay. And that's it. That's basic, right? That that's the basic two categories. Yeah. All right. Did you guys get that? Stop saying butter is not vegetarian. Stop it. It's just stop. Okay. And then healthy snacks. What determines a healthy snack? because everybody has a different opinion. Okay, I try to keep things really simple with my clients. Two basic concerns with healthy snacks. One is if you are noshing for the sake of noshing and you are not hungry, oh yeah, then that would not be health. I mean, carrots, if you're not hungry, aren't healthy because your body's not calling for them. And then the second basic to keep in mind is a snack is a mini meal, right? So, you want to eat variety. You're not going to just have chips or just have celery. You're going to have a mix of proteins and carbs and fats all in a mini meal. The other thing that I was told is never sit down with the container. Always portion it out. Yes. Unless some people, right, because most people don't have the ability to stop when, oh, I've had a few bites of this and a few bites of this and now it's two hours till dinner. I'm full enough. Mhm. Next thing you know, it's the bottom of the the container. Where did all the nuts go? Where did all the chips go? So, put it out on the plate because, you know, you can always go back for seconds, right? If you finish what you put on your plate and you're still hungry for more, go back and get another handful. Cool. And then also another tip I want to throw out there is, and I know this one, never shop hungry, right? Never shop hungry or you will come home with all kinds of processed foods and somehow broccoli doesn't look appealing when you're famished. All right. All right. What do we got here? Nonfat Greek yogurt. Plain. Plain. We don't get the other stuff like the strawberry or not not the kind that has all of the goodies on the bottom already because you're looking at lots of added sugar and it takes away all the healthiness of it. So, what we want to do is learn how to doctor it up so it doesn't taste plain, but it's still healthy. We're going to show you now what we have to flavor the yogurt with. We have pudding. We have Jell-O and we have some natural peanut butter. These are your least healthy options, but they're still a heck of a lot better than the pre-made stuff that you would get. And then your natural peanut butter, you can go natural organic. If you have a fresh ground, it's going to be a better option for you as far as messiness. However, the pre- jar that you have to stir around, it works, but it's a little bit messy. We also have dried fruit, cranberries, raisins, any type of dried fruit that you like. Almond extract, and then zest of a citrus. You can use lemon, you can use lime, or we're going to try orange today. Okay. So, we're going to try these. It's a taste test. Yum. All right. And we we put all the flavors in the yogurt. So, first one we're going to do is what? The pudding. Yes. Let's try the pudding first. All right. Go ahead. You grab yours. Very very good. Very good. That's the chocolate pudding. That is the chocolate pudding. And it actually tastes more like chocolate pudding than yogurt. Oh, and the yogurt glands are going. You feel You feel that tang pulling. Uh-huh. Yep. All right. What's the next flavor we're doing? This is the black cherry jell-o. It's so beautiful. It's It looks like It almost looks like yogurt. Oh, it is yogurt. I meant like frozen yogurt. Sorry. Actually, would make a pretty dessert almost. Mhm. And Oh, wow. That is good. Okay, that's amazing. I thought I liked my chocolate, but this is amazing. That was very good. Okay, I I might have a favorite beyond what I thought I was going to. That's the black cherry. That is black cherry. Okay, that's great. Now, this is this is going to be a test for me after the black cherry because peanut peanut butter and yogurt is usually my favorite mix, right? But I'm I might be leaning to the black cherry now. Wow. I like it. Mhm. But it doesn't compete with that one over there. No. From a sweetness standpoint. Now, from a savory, if I was having this, you mentioned Triscuits earlier, right? Having this on crackers, having this on a shortbread cookie would be really good. But by itself, the black cherry is the winner so far. Yeah. But and if you're a peanut butter fan, go for it. Yes. All right. What's next? Let's do the almond dust track. Let's wait on the cranberries. Here you go. It needs something else though. Yeah, it needs It still needs sweetness. It's got a great almond flavor, but something I would put it with fruit. Yes, I would use the almond extract in with like the dried fruit one we're going to try next. Or that would be amazing. I'm taking over, Jack. Sorry, I'm taking over. I'm going to do a drop of the almond extract on the peanut butter. Remix that and see how the peanut butter with the almond does. There you go. Okay. That helped the peanut butter, did it? Mhm. All right, real quick. Still not still not my favorite, but it helped it. All right, so the next one is the orange. The orange zest. This is the orange zest. And can I show them how much we used? Yeah. Yeah, go ahead. So, not the whole orange, just half the half half the outside. Kind of like the almond extract. It needs a little sweetness. I love the citrus flavor in it, right? But it needs a little something to sweeten it. Okay. And then the last thing is what is the dried fruit. And we're saving it for last because really to get the best flavor with the dried fruit, you want to let it sit for a while. That way the natural sugar oozes out into the yogurt. So if you do raisins, even letting it sit for a couple of hours or overnight. We did cranberries. Mhm. And make sure when you're eating this, make sure you're getting a cranberry in every bite. Mhm. Make sure you always have that cranberry in there. Very nice. That is good. Wow. Nice job. All right, you guys ready? We're moving on in the next topic. All right. Okay. So, now the next thing we're going to talk about is uh packaging up vegetables, right? Yes. Okay. And I'm I'm just going to throw us out here cuz I'm just a lazy guy. No, you're pressed for time. Okay. I'm a press for time lazy guy and I buy this that's already pre-cut. That's how lazy I am. But it's it's probably half the price, right, to prep it yourself. Absolutely. Ziploc bags are what keep you away from the vending machine because if you're all you have to do is grab your Ziploc bag, throw a variety in, and you're set. All right. What else? If I don't like this packaging, okay, if you are so pressed for time, you don't have time to put that into a Ziploc bag, grab one of these puppies that's already bagged. have these at work. When you're done snacking on it, clip it. You're done. The one thing I have trouble with is what do I dip this in? Good question. We've talked about variety. And so, if you sit down and have this by itself, it's going to be bland. So, you do need to have a dip. And the other is this by itself is not going to keep you full. So, you think about what can I have that has a little protein with it. Beans have some protein. So, a hummus dip of some sort. Hummus you can buy pre-made or you can make it yourself if you want to take the time to do that. Uh it's cheaper obviously to make it yourself, right? Uh but it is much quicker just to buy it pre-made. You can also dip this if somebody's not opposed to ranch dressing, something like that. Now if you do it in ranch dressing, you need to add protein source in another place that we'll be talking about later on. Okay. So I usually snack on mixed nuts. Okay. And uh usually like watching TV I'll have a little bit of them even though I'm not supposed to but I do. Um I tried the raw ones and they were just I just couldn't handle straight raw. Too plain. Yeah. Okay. So what do you suggest? Well, one of the things that folks do if they're watching salt and wanting to cut back on the salt is simple. Take a handful of one, take a handful of the other. Oh, mix them together. Seriously, it's that simple. It's that simple. And then as you get used to the flavor, it's a handful of this and two handfuls of this until you get used to not having all the salt. It's so simple. It's actually simple. Sorry. And the verdict is you can't even tell good. Wow. They're salted so heavily they spread. Yes. Yeah. Yes. We talked about the protein. So, if you have vegetables or you have whatever it is you're snacking on and you want to have a protein source and you're traveling on the go, grab it in the car, Nick sticks it are a wonderful, they come in turkey, they come in uh beef and a couple of different flavors. For processed food, it's about as healthy as you can get on that stuff. And the flavor is great. Open it and try it if you want to. And they're nice size, too. Mhm. Yep. All right. I'm going to open this. All right. Well, you know what? I'll taste this in a minute. Let's talk about that. All right, chips. You do not have to give up chips with healthy snacking. It's all about a little of this and a little of that. So, you're not going to have a full bag of chips. You may have a handful of chips plus a handful of vegetables, plus some hummus, plus some nicksticks, whatever. And this particular brand I like because the type of oil that they use is a healthy oil. They're organic. It's a good route to go. Okay. Now, this category is why I'm diabetic. the bread category. Okay. And I and I I now this brand here is like Ezekiel bread. Food for life. Food for life and Ezekiel are pretty much the same. Yes. And explain to the people watching what's what is this kind of bread? It's made like how? Okay. It is made from a sprouted grain which means that you don't have just the grain by itself. It has been sprouted. It's now alive. You have more nutrients coming out of it. because of that. It's easier to digest because of that. From a taste standpoint, it's not going to be a fluffy bread. If you like grainier, heartier breads, this is going to be good. Last thing before we say goodbye, uh, I want to say thanks for being on the show. Oh, my pleasure. Um, eating healthy is always a pain in the butt costwise. There's a lot of people out there on a single income or no income at all at the moment. And how do I where do I save money? How do I cut cost? Because it's easier to eat bad and everybody hates that. Okay, two things. If you're looking at long-term, I had a friend years ago who told me you can either pay the doctor or you can pay the grosser. I've heard that. It's your choice. Y um but when you're on something fixed and tight immediately, it's a matter of time. You can either invest time into cutting up your own vegetables so that they're cheaper than buying the tray. you can make the time to make the hummus instead of buying it. Uh or if you're short for time because you are working so much, then go the the quicker route, but the more expensive route. And you can you told me off camera that you could even make your own health bars. Yes, you can. Okay. So, that's one of my goals in the future to possibly bring back Sher to show us how to do homemade health bars. M yum. That'd be a good video. Yes. All right. We'll see you guys in the next episode. Take care. Thanks. Bye-bye. For some reason, I was told nuts are an anti-depressant. I'm not That's a blooper. All right, let's try it again. If it's high in selenium, it is. Actually, this is good for your prostate, but we're not going to go there. [Music]

Really enjoyed the vid. Mashallah your vids are getting really fun to watch. And also here's a tip from me. When you hungry just grab a bag of doritos cheese flavor and live life loool that's my advice. Just don't over do it people.
Glad you went back to meat for all the normal people out there
i dont eat snacks
vegans aer way overboard and its not my thing. nice video though
I have a couple questions for the health guru:
Is it okay/healthy to take plain yogurt or Greek yogurt, and add baby food as a flavoring? Why not, if its unhealthy?
What is the good and healthier way to take plain yogurt and infuse flavor in it?
This lady knows her stuff
I like her! She gives really good tips!
How much yogurt/pudding mix and yogurt/black cherry yogurt did you mix together?
Nice video!
As I said on another post, I am trying to learn to to make everything from scratch. I think it is healthier, and cheaper. There are sooooo many recipies out there on the interwebs now on how to make things. I made homemade cheese tonight. Took like a half hour. Also made my own cream cheese and sour cream. I found a recipie for my own superduper healthy almond flour bread, takes 10 minutes to put together. My point is, clean eating is not expensive. And it is not that hard to learn. It is better for your health and your bank account. Thanks for this informative video. Thanks to all you bloggers and vloggers out there sharing your knowledge. God bless.
Planning to try the yogurt ideas, really enjoyed the video.
Hey Cooking With Jack Show one very inexpensive meal that is healthy is rice+beans+veggies a little canola oil and maybe a small portion of meat on the side.
Oh I do hope you can get together and show us how to make 'snack bars'. I really hate buying the granola/other snack bars but it's so much faster to just grab and go. I think if I found a simple recipe with basic things (no special hunt and seek items in it) that can be stored easy I'd give it a go.
I am allergic to seeds and nuts. So, it is a lot more difficult ; however, I found useful hints. Thank you.
Why not peanut butter AND black cherry–PB&J yogurt!! Also, regarding your previous quinoa burger, try adding a TINY pinch of baking soda in your onions (like less than 1/8 teaspoon). The onions will brown quicker, be sweeter and as long as you don't use too much you'll never taste it. I used this method when making your French onion soup, it was awesome!
I would think a great way to add fruit and a bit of sweetness to plain yogurt could be making a fruit compote with honey? Sort of like fruit on the top? 😛
Great video Jack! Love all the healthy snack ideas. The whole "mini meal" snack idea is genius!!
A handfull of chips, plus a handful of veggies, plus a humus and that weird stick? Those ammounts come close to a full meal and not a snack… Its why I dislike the context of making a snack a mini meal because often it becomes so much because you try to balance it it becomes a full meal and not just a snack. To me a snack is an apple or a handfull of nuts or some chips not and and and.
Just for information, healthy foods doesn't mean it's for weight loss. So be careful, not to overload.
Late July chips are awesome.
WHat about healthy snacks for someone whos allergic to fruit
Thanks for sharing this info!
Mary flak dont drink diet cola it has aspartame in it if you dont know what that is look it up its not good try zevea pop.
I noticed the lady in this video had a southern accent. I also noticed your kitchen was different, then I saw a comment that you moved to Tenn! Welcome to the south!
How about doing a segment about balanced dieting without crazy quinoa or kale, show us how a typical days worth of food should be for a normal person who likes normal food on a diet looks like. Cheap and duplicable.
