Keep in mind that the subject of workout volume is highly nuanced and there are a ton of different factors to consider, and there isn't a single “right” or “wrong” answer that applies to every person. I'm just speaking in broad over-arching terms here for the average natural lifter trying to build muscle.
There are way too many people in the gym aimlessly bouncing around from bodybuilding exercise to exercise with 4 sets of 5 different movements for a single muscle group… obsessing over the mind muscle connection yet not training anywhere near muscular failure… not tracking progressive overload… and simply lifting until they get a decent muscle burn/muscle pump and then calling it a day. If you've got upper percentile bodybuilding genetics and/or pharmaceutical enhancement on your side then this can still be effective, but if not then it's a fantastic way to spin your wheels and significantly stunt your progress. Most people would be best off to focus more on their effort level per set vs. how many total sets they're performing during their muscle building workouts. A large number of low effort sets is typically going to be much less effective than a smaller number of higher effort ones. The former turns the session into more of a conditioning/endurance based workout versus a hypertrophy focused workout. If you want to maximize your muscle gains then you should probably be getting within at least 2 reps of failure on the bulk of sets. And if you're truly doing that then those super high volume workouts won't even be possible in the first place since you'll run out of steam way before you're able to crank out your normal 20 sets for a given muscle.
Around half that amount would probably be the upper limit per muscle in a single workout most of the time if you're genuinely training hard. If you think you fall into the category described here then try simplifying things a bit. Fewer total exercises and sets… but then really dialing up the intensity on the sets you are doing.

high volume workouts for muscle growth or absolute trash okay and the only reason you think you're doing something is because your favorite instagram or tic toc influencers doing it if you are capable of doing a high volume exercise where you're doing five six seven eight movements with more than four or five sets on each movement you're not doing anything yeah people really need to get out of this mentality that more is automatically better when it comes to building muscle more sets more exercises higher frequency if there's anything the majority of people in the gym actually need more of it's more effort on the sets they're already doing not aimlessly running around the gym like a headless chicken cranking out a bunch of low intensity pump sets on a million different fancy movements they saw on instagram but instead narrowing the focus down to a smaller number of key exercises dialing in the technique training close to legitimate muscular failure and progressively overloading in a structured way high volume workouts can still produce results but they won't be ideal for most natural lifters

Slow paced move 65 sets of 65 push ups two times day for 26 years it's worth trying out for yourself, high volume calisthenics with High intensity training is the way to go.
High volume training and Low Volume is good for endurance training, i used timer on my phone 📱 splitting my workouts three 60 minutes workouts using Hybrid Training calisthenics using Prison style workout/military Boot camp workout, if you want to get bigger have eat more and shredded your nutrition your diet.
True , before i hit the Gym as Daily Routine , i saw that i had the Most Growth , by doing the most simple Barbell only Workout . I mean those Machines help in some Isolation , but for Growth , keep it Simple like Golden Era 😉
I’m just confused.
But then again I think everyone is to be at war with one another because we are not wanted to be our best.
I’m under this impression that we are not to know about nutrition or physical activity, because these seem like simple concepts to be taught just like pregnancy or math skills. But it just seems education systems fail to do this. And I think their meant to 😢 I don’t think we are wanted fo be our best.
Good I agree .
Quality volume 👑
I like doing lite weight and lil high reps focusing on contraction when im in a lazy day I don’t want to go heavy
So you guys know more than Arnold lol wasn’t he doing like 4 or 5 different exercises For chest
Can someone explain the new york calisthenics dudes to me then? Thousands of reps and some of the best physiques ive ever seen.
Philippians 4:13 (NIV): "I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
Lol….I only do 18 sets per session for 3 muscle groups😂
Sean, i know its an older video but let me say this, i get a program from your page like 1 years ago, and i saw the set numbers and said "hell nah man, its impossible to build muscle with full body and 2-3 sets per session only!" And i suffered with 0 progress like 9-10 months. And i was in the same weight and strength. Then i remembered your program in october, then i applied the same logic and write a program to myself with your mindset of training method by looking at your program you sent me 1 year ago,(full body, 2-3 sets, 1 exercise per muscle, close to failure) only changed some exercises like lateral raises but with cables. And just in 7 weeks, my compounds and isolations blew up, and im in a fat loss ,i always counted my calories, obsessed over my workout in bulking but never got progress, progressing weights in calioric deficit is surprised me, That reminded me how i stayed in absolute begginner phase for like 1 year just bcs of that nonse information around
Says the home boy gangsta wannabe on roids!
Is 25 sets overall in a day, 6x a week good?
Mike Mentzer talked about high intensity training some 50 years ago & now people are starting to wake up 😂
What about high volume low intensity workouts?
hey what if i just want to keep going with my 50k lbs of volume and high intesity so i can beat my body up enough to forget the sh!t that's wrong with my head
I didn't hear a word he said. I was mesmerised by the uncanny valley filter.
Okay all you lifters. The most important things are consistency, intensity and for me variety (which keeps me interested). Just fucking go. As long as you have intensity in your workouts (be smart, do tried and true exercises), it really doesn't matter if you do the perfect sets or reps. Did you work hard? Yes! Then you're good to go.
Planet fitness has people who will sit at the ab machine for 45mins doing unlimited sets and have zero results… it’s trash
K-keep
I-it
S-simple
S-stupid
Ok so i need to get in shape.. I'm going to listen to some guy in his motor….
Is that michael b jordan?
High volume workouts are great it’s called endurance! Get you some 💪🏾
Um. Low and high volume both work… It doesn't really matter as long as you are between minimum effective volume and maximum recoverable volume.
Faze Booya if he whent to the gym:
Most, I blew up benching 135
I disagree partially everything. He added was correct then hou apply that to a high volume protcal high doesnt have to be 50 sets per muscle it could be 15-20 but if we are pretending 5 sets per muscle per week is optimal we are day dreaming mike mentzer style
what is the definition of high volume?
Well this video didn’t age well.. seeing as your new open class champion of 2024 does high volume sets..
Hey boo 💜💙❤️🇺🇸
I need more sleep.
Agree and disagree. In most cases, fewer exercises, greater frequency, but higher volume and a better understanding for what an effective intensity would be most useful for most people.
Many people simply don't understand that it is a balance: more reps=more endurance, less reps=more strength.
That means a person is balancing how much strength and endurance gains that given person wants to achieve.
I do 40 working sets for every muscle group I train. 30 sets and below seems like not enough. All to failure, obviously
