one of the best ways to get through a personal crisis is through journaling and here's a therapist's guide on how to do just that love it's yanto holistic dietitian and stress therapist specializing in cancer and chronic conditions so that you may thrive in remission and prevention so if that sounds like your vibe be sure to subscribe and join the tribe when you're going through some especially difficult times journaling is such a great way to get your thoughts out it also helps to bring up emotions for more clarity and it helps you to come up with creative solutions to the situation that you're dealing with now the general idea of journaling may not appeal to everybody but that's why i'm going to share with you various ways that you can journal and one of them is bound to appeal to you so that you too may benefit from its therapeutic effects one great way to journal is through a story book type of journal human beings are natural storytellers and keeping a story journal can be an excellent way to help you if you're going through depression struggling with a sudden crisis or unresolved tragedy or living with a chronic illness stories have a beginning middle and end right so writing a story journal is basically writing like you're telling your story and this doesn't have to be through handwriting it but it can also be done through a personal blog you can do photos as a story journal and even videos and some experts advise writing about the same episode several times because the retelling of the story can often bring a new perspective the next type of journal is a worry book this format can benefit those suffering from anxiety stress or insomnia first it helps to have a journal that you like looking at one with some pretty color something that represents you and you take one of the pages and you draw a line in the center of the page on the left you write some of the issues that are upsetting you and on the right list some of the steps you've taken to address the problem or some solutions you plan to try use this space to plan organize and strategize for the future and to help you get and stay organized you can also use a daily log journal a log is useful if you want to build and maintain daily healthy habits you can use this journal to keep track of anything from how much water you're drinking in the day the amount of exercise you're getting as well as writing down your sugar levels and how you feel after a meal this type of journal can help you understand your body's rhythms and help you chart your recovery from a chronic illness in this type of journal you simply record the facts but you may also want to write down some narrative to go with those facts so for example if you're keeping track of your chemotherapy days it may also help to jot down how you felt after each session doing this really helps you to see what your daily progression has been like and it also helps keep you accountable if you notice that there are certain things that are not serving you another type of journal that is one of my personal favorites is a couples or a family journal this one is not done often enough a shared journal with your loved ones helps to enhance communication deepen emotional bonds and enhance trust and intimacy it could be as simple as having a journal that you leave in the same place for everyone to be able to be free to access anytime each person is encouraged to write record their thoughts or feelings and even respond to another person's entry and it's especially important to write compliments and encouragements as well as writing through your misunderstandings and your issues this is an example of a couple's journal that i absolutely love and highly recommend it was a gift from my mom to my husband and i and it is such a fun journal to go through as a couple it has some simple prompts to encourage us to write about and it is a three-year journal which is really nice because then you can go back and reflect on what you have written in the past and see how far you've come together as a couple and this next journal is one that we so often hear about but has been one of the most therapeutic ways of journaling and that is a gratitude journal a gratitude journal is especially helpful for someone who has the tendency to be over stressed depressed or even pessimistic throughout a crisis and it's a type of journal that can bring anyone joy you simply make a list of what you are thankful for from the smallest to the greatest from the personal to the global every day you can write anywhere from five to ten things that you are grateful for and it doesn't matter if you repeat yourself and a fun bonus type of journaling is through a sketch journal and you don't have to be an artist to have a sketch journal there are times where it's easier to illustrate how you feel as opposed to expressing it in words and just the act of drawing can work as a mindfulness technique because it helps you to put focus into something that is outside of the things that have been fogging your mind and if you're not a great artist it makes it even more amusing as you can see from my drawings they don't have to convey a deep emotion or any emotion at all just doing it can evoke some laughter and we all know that laughter is such great medicine journaling can also serve as a record of what you are experiencing and it helps you to see what you have learned from it and when you go back and read through the experience again at some point in the future it may shed some light on something that you may take away from the experience and it can also be a boost of confidence to look back and see how far you've come so there you have some of my favorite therapist approved ways of journaling was there one that peaked your interest hit that like button and let me know in the comments below which one of these you'll be trying next and remember you and your body are unique and beautiful there is no one size fits all so silence the standards because you are more one of the best ways to get through why am i moving so much thrive in revision revision oh me and i love you all right go go [Music] you
