Jan Reilly, a mammographer at Southampton Hospital's Ellen Hermanson Breast Center (located in Southampton, NY, USA), shares information about the latest technology available for early detection of breast cancer. [Music] hi I'm Jan Riley from the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center I'm one of the mammographers here and um we're just here to introduce our new piece of equipment so this is the Tomo synthesis machine uh we're thrilled to have this it's state-ofthe-art and you know once again um Julie Ratner along with the Ellen run came up with the money so that the hospital was able to purchased this for us and for you know all the women here on the East end so I'd like to explain a little bit on how this works it does a 2d Imaging as well as a 3D image okay with the 3D imaging this tube above which is the um x-ray tube will pan across the woman's breast and it will take images at various levels of the breast tissue and right after that um leaving the woman's breast compression it will switch into a t 2D mode and then taking just the standard 2D projection so the woman is in the compression only once for each image and the both exams are done together um this offers the um radiologist a great deal of information a bit more than they used to be able to get especially for women with the very dense or Fiber cystic breast tissue it helps to see through those densities and it helps to separate them um it is also now reducing the amount of callbacks that we have which are anxiety producing for many women uh you don't want to hear a phone call from the facility where you just received your mamogram um the first thing of course that crosses their minds is that oh no you know I have breast cancer but this reduces the the need for calling back women um because the information that the radiologist is obtaining between between the 2D and the 3D combined together it's October so I would just like to remind you it's Breast Awareness Month make sure you schedule your annual mamography um just call us our schedulers will be very happy to put you into our schedule make your appointment come in and see our new piece of equipment here just remember that early detection is the key thank you
