now y'all know i'm an iowa girl through and through i was born and raised in iowa i grew up there actually worked on corn fields in the summers growing up uh i'm a meat and potatoes girl even though corn was our vegetable but yes a meat and potatoes girl i love a good steak oh my a burger i always say i'm the cheapest date ever because like a really good burger and fries is really all i need to be happy and guys those things are still true and that's why this video me making this video is almost a little surprising to me if you had told me a few years ago that i'd be making a video about why i'm going plant-based whatever i've been like plant who plant what because i love meat oh bacon all of it so let me tell you why i'm adopting a plant-based diet um and also what the benefits of a plant-based diet are because there really are a lot guys i'm dr jane carl practicing family physician on air health expert and video creator drop me a comment down below let me know first of all are you plant-based tell me what you do what you don't do what you're open to what you're not um because again i come to you not only in love but in openness that this is actually a surprise for me all right so let's talk about what plant-based is when we say plant-based now depending on the source you read you might find different things some people say a plant-based diet is a diet that contains no meat at all which by the way is not what i'm doing and then there are many other sources that say a plant-based diet is a diet that has minimal meat which is what i'm doing so i'm going to focus on the minimal meat option in terms of what i'm doing but the benefits are really applying to both types of plant-based diets if you will okay so basically you're like well what do what i eat on a plant-based diet well the good thing is it's going to be pretty simple because the plant-based diet that i'm sort of following which is minimal meat is just that minimal meat so what does that mean for me it means that you know two-thirds of my plate is veggies and vegetables and fruits and you know um whole grains and stuff like that and then maybe a third is lean protein if that at all like chicken or fish now what that also means for me to be honest with you is i'm actually going meatless on certain days i'm trying not to eat meat every day that's something i'm trying to do and when i do eat meat i eat smaller quantities than i used to and i'm also minimizing my red meat so that's sort of how i'm doing it but guys generally that's what plant-based means to some degree now there's varying you know sort of different options again some people do know me but let's talk about the benefits and by the way some of the foods you can eat okay fruits no-brainer right you got that veggies no-brainer root vegetables love root vegetables because they fill me up that's potatoes that sweet potatoes that's beets things like that butternut squash yum also legumes you say what's a legume uh things like chickpeas um lentils kidney beans black beans peas as well i love peas also seeds don't forget seeds so like pumpkin seeds chia seeds um flax seeds there's also nuts pistachios almonds uh peanuts uh cashew cashews ah um healthy fats that includes things like avocados olive oil healthy healthy healthy oils healthy fats uh and then also whole grains okay so rather than the white rice we're doing things like brown rice quinoa quinoa yeah it's kind of messy i think but quinoa is a great option um for any diet really but especially for a plant-based diet to give you some variety uh rye barley whole grain uh bread etc so those are some examples of what comes uh in this diet where you're doing sort of plant-based and the truth be told is these are options for any diet that you're doing like any diet or not diet right so these are just great food options to include for healthy stuff all right so what are the benefits because that's what we're talking about this is what sold me this is why i'm doing it number one uh many people who adopted plant-based diet studies have shown are able to keep a healthy weight okay so if you're one of your goals is a healthier weight this could be a way to do it for you obviously before you start any diet or anything like that you want to talk to your doctor but just keep that in mind many people are able to maintain a healthy weight with a plant-based diet the other thing is lowering risks for diabetes cholesterol and high blood pressure also improving those indices that fall within those as well people who adopt plant-based diets tend to do better with things like diabetes hypertension hyperlipidemia okay now once again i'm not saying this is a one size fits all and that this is everyone but these are these dietary changes are healthy changes that's going to positively impact your overall health in these ways the other thing is risk for heart disease cardiovascular disease a plant-based diet can be very beneficial to your risk for cardiovascular disease that means risk for heart attack and stroke that's what we want to see right uh the fourth thing is actually adopting a plant-based diet can actually lower your risk for certain cancers guys i've done videos on remember that video i did on um the foods that can increase your risk for cancer yeah there are some foods um certain meats etcetera prepared meats at different types of meats that can increase your risk of certain cancers etc so yeah by adopting a more plant-based diet you may actually lower that risk of cancer and the fifth thing guys this is something that i really feel strongly about and as i get older i am more and more and more committed to which is trying to protect the environment in whatever small or large ways i can do on an individual level now eating less meat in particular beef actually helps the environment this was something i didn't quite understand when i first heard it so if this doesn't make sense to you let me just sort of explain so beef comes from cows and basically cows emit methane which is a powerful greenhouse gas that um is not really great for the environment okay uh so by eating less beef it lowers the demand for for beef and cows thus less methane and potentially um less negative impact on the environment the other thing is um oftentimes we're destroying really really important green spaces pastures forests etc to make room for grazing for uh cows and other animals that may be providing meat sources for us so that's also another way that our environment is being negatively impacted and if you think that it may not be a big deal to like you know if you if you think that you lowering your meat consumption is not a big deal with regards to the environment i actually read a statistic and it says that if everyone in the united states cut meat consumption by 25 percent it could decrease annual greenhouse gas emissions by one percent um and that could literally help uh protect our rainforest um people uh land air all sorts of things um guys you know and and by the way decreasing annual greenhouse emissions uh by one percent is a big deal okay just know that um you know even small changes make a big difference and these are things that all matter to me um i did a video on what i eat in a day and you guys might have seen that and i'll try to put that in the comments too um when i watched what i ate in a day i was actually a little bit like i was honest but i was also a little bit kind of like whoa we need to change our eating patterns and that's one of the things that prompted me to say maybe i need to like change this up so i'm trying to do more fresh foods veggies fruits all the things i mentioned and less meat and you know i'm okay with it i really really am so keep in mind the last thing i'll say about this is just because you're eating less meat does not mean you can say eat fried veggies fattening veggies or veggies that you're like loading up with butter and cheese and frying deep frying right we don't want that we also want to avoid processed foods it doesn't mean you can eat twinkies all day just because you're avoiding meat that's not healthy it doesn't mean you can avoid eat cakes and cookies all day because you're not eating meat or refined white carbs or salty stuffed potato chips all day remember that going plant-based to some degree does not necessarily mean that anything that doesn't include meat is uh or should be fair game for you because those things can be harmful as well so keep that in mind guys i'll do more videos on this um this is an adventure for me and i hope that this is helpful for you as a woman growing up in iowa who loves her meat and potatoes i also love ribs i love bacon i love hamburger i'm just being honest with you um this is a big deal for me but for me and i think for many of my patients i think this is probably a very healthy and good way to go let me know what you think in the comments guys i'm dr jen carl practicing family physician on air health expert and video creator for those of you watching me on facebook hello thank you so much for watching um please 😲 DOC…. I'VE ADOPTED A PLANT BASE DIET….BUT DOES IT REALLY MATTER SINCE THE MAJORITY OF THE FOOD IS GMO !!!
AND I HEARD SOMEWHERE ON YOUTUBE THAT GMO FOODS DON'T HAVE ANY BENEFICIAL NUTRIENTS !!!
😎 BY THE WAY….I LOVE YOUR SHOW !!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ !!!
I’m trying it out I like the idea of plant based. Veganism is too extreme for me and I’m glad there is a difference
As far as lowering blood pressure, when your vitamin D is low, your blood pressure goes up as did mine. I did not have any issues with cholesterol until I became plant-based. Many vegans eat a lot of starchy carbohydrates And we all know that those carbohydrates metabolized in the body into sugar, that sugar, spikes, insulin and sugar in the body. starch and high carbs and all the juicing. Juicing removes the fiber that would normally slow down the absorption of the sugar from the fruits being juiced. Veganism makes a lot of claims that are not true. I was the science experiment and it lwent all bad. I didn’t even believe that being vegan caused all my problems that’s why I stay ed vegan so long. I believed that my vegan diet had nothing to do with all the illnesses that I suffered. I have been off the vegan diet since 2020 and everything has now normalized. What have I learned? I have learned that you don’t have to go through extremes to be healthyvjust cut out the junk and be disciplined. I have learned I cannot supplement my way to good health. . I have learned cut out all the foolishness from my diet, i.e., processed meats, all high, fructose, corn syrup, cut out as much table, sugar, as well as substitute, sugars as possible, stop the sodas and large amounts of real fruit juice, no no juice drinks, cook your own food. If you don’t make it, don’t eat it. Know what’s in your food. I went through an extreme because I wanted to get healthy and stay healthy. I thought that going plant-based would be what I needed to get and stay healthy. You cannot be healthy when your nutrition is constantly in a state of compromise. Even though I made the best collard green wraps, the best chickpea and butternut squash casserole, I the best chickpea, tuna, the best plant-based gyros.
Qqq vitamins are the building blocks for a healthy body. You cannot get whole and complete nutrition just on leafy greens, plants, nuts, beans, seeds, legumes, and fruits. Even though I made the absolute best and most gourmet chickpea, butternut Collette green casserole, the best college green wraps, the best, vegan ambrosia, the best black bean gourmet burgers with a plantain bun, topped with fried green, tomato and braised, red cabbage, with brussels sprouts, roasted on the side!!!! The vegan food I made were beautiful, colorful, and what I thought were nutrient, dense, and bioavailable…..not so much, tho. Please be and stay well!❤
Don’t do it! I was the science experiment for 10 years, and I’ve made what I considered vegan gourmet meals using plant-based ingredients fake means, no soy, a gnothing Hill Joannes Food eveything with me from scratch! After the first six months, it was all down. You don’t have to believe me just look at all the YouTube stories of people And lost their health their lives following this pseudo science diet. There is not enough nutrition yes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, scenes for you to be healthy.
Plant based with minimal meat sounds about my speed. Fish, chicken and turkey✌️🙏
Looking into organic plant based diet due to the hormones and chemicals being added to the meat these days. @Dr.Jen how can we still get the minerals and vitamins in meats from plants?
Went whole foods, planted based this January and have eliminated diary and meat (except a dab of butter occasionally.)
Very nice reminder! I been doing the same here going more plant based less meat is the key, and more produce, in the morning I do my best have fruits for breakfast even if I decided to eat something with it.
I didn’t know about cows and methane and the environment. The only meat I eat now is chicken, turkey and seafood, but I’m wanting to eat more plant-based
I do exactly the same you just described my diet 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼to a T

Great video! I switched to a mostly (80%) planted based / vegetarian diet about 8 months ago. Took a few weeks for my body to adjust to my new diet (especially on days when I lift or do multiple hours on the mountain bike trails). But with adding other dense protein sources, it has been a great change! My weight dropped 15 pounds and has stabilized there. Plus I feel great and have consistent energy all day. Overall, I feel a lot healthier and my digestive system has been very appreciative.
You're fuckin beautiful
Folks, listen here. If u don't eat any animal products u will be unhealthy…period. need iron. Meat protein is better for muscles. Meat consumed is used almost completely in your body as opposed to veggies that end up mostly as your stool. Yes, vegans are mostly full of shit! Literally. U will feel better on short term eating veggies but comes as a deficit on the all around. Since they are easier to digest, but less nutrient rich. Try the carnivore diets as an experiment. If u sit in a desk for a job…maybe veggies work. Also, if u like animals you should eat bison, cows and meat. The reason is simple. When u plant an acre of veggies you kill hundreds of animals. Vegetables are by far the bigger killer of animals than slaughter houses. Here's the explanation: when u till a bean field u killed hundreds of animals and insects. The soild plowing kills the bunny rabbits in the soil. The frogs get chewed up. Even little fawn deer get killed. Also, the harvesting can be more brutal to animals. Then large animals can get trapped. So eat meat to save animals.
I was a vegan for 1 year i can tell a complete difference in eating as a vegan vs eating meat. I'm really feeling like God is pushing me to go back vegan again
Sounds great!
You are absolutely beautiful I love your blue black hair color
I've never heard of meat on a plant based diet.
Totally vegan here, for over 20 years.
Getting cured from
HPV/ wart using herbal medicine was a dream come through after 6 year's of been diagnosed. I got contact on an article and made talks with #drokosodo via YouTube channel https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCTCB6CtuS14dGW0vbNFl6SA/about
Omg so many benefits!!!
Fascinating!
This sounds manageable.
What about goats and camels meat and goats and camels milk ? I think they are realizing natural organic foods in this planet ….
Really! I love a Plant Based Diet ♥️👍…
Beautiful Smile ❤😍
Hello Dr Jen Caudle….. sounds good to me.
Can we date…. love a good hamburger and fries myself. All that sounds like is a good diet
First of all, I eat kosher to the best of my ability (Leviticus 11). I try to eat fish rather than meat. Lots of legumes ad whole grains. Almond milk rather than dairy. Meat would be once a week at most. First choice would be chicken, then beef. Lamb or veal on occasion. I do have a weakness for cheese such as mozzarella, ricotta, and farmer.
I need to eat more fresh or frozen vegetables and/or juices.
Totally open to plant based diets.
Hey Dr Jen
I am open to going completely plant based also!!! I’m finding it so difficult to do but I’m determined to find the right path for me. I want to go completely no meat, no dairy.
