7 Must-Eat Fermented Foods for a Healthy Gut | Dietitian Q&A | EatingWell

at this very moment there are hundreds of trillions of microbes in your body most of which are in your GI tract yes we are talking about the microbiome today what it is what it does and foods that you can eat to help it thrive why does gut health matter so those trillions of bacteria have jobs to do they help you digest your food into usable energy absorb nutrients and they can even support a healthy immune system so they're not harmful and they can actually be beneficial everyone's microbiome is different and certain factors can influence it like genetics antibiotic use age geographical location diet exercise stress levels and more certain things might be out of your control but there are other things you can do to help it Thrive so there are many health benefits to keeping your microbiome healthy some of which we might not even understand yet it feels like every day there's new research coming out about why a healthy gut is good for your overall health and it can affect things like sleep mood weight and chronic disease risk what are probiotics when we talk about foods that help our gut Thrive there are two main types prebiotics and probiotics so prebiotics are fibers that are not digestible to us but they are digestible to the bacteria in our GI tract this includes foods like bananas onions and garlic probiotics are living organisms that are found in other Foods typically fermented foods and these can help add to the diversity and variety of microbes in our gut what are the best fermented foods to eat for better gut health luckily for us eating for a healthier gut can be a delicious Endeavor so in no particular order here are seven Great fermented foods to eat for gut health first up sauerkraut made with just cabbage and salt this is a fiber rich and probiotic rich food we also have a recipe if you want to make your own but if you're in the grocery store just keep in mind that refrigerated types will have more active probiotics than those that are shelf stable or Jarred second kimchi if you aren't familiar kimchi is a spicy Korean side dish usually made with cabbage or other vegetables and it's pouted as having some potential anti-cancer properties and other health benefits look for it in the refrigerated section near pickles and sauerkraut or at your local Asian market third kefir Kefir is a fermented milk beverage that basically tastes like drinkable yogurt which I have fond memories of from childhood it is packed with calcium and the probiotics in the kefir can eat some of the lactose so if you're lactose intolerant you might be able to enjoy kefir try it and smoothies are on its own fourth is kombucha so kombucha is a fizzy probiotic beverage that's made from when sweet tea is introduced to a scoby which is short for symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeast so the scoby will eat the sugars in the sweet tea and the tannic acids and caffeine leaving you with a fiber rich fizzy drink you don't have to be a home Brewer to reap the benefits most grocery stores have a variety of flavors that you could choose from fifth is miso miso is a popular Japanese condiment that can give a Savory boost to your dishes it's typically made by combining steamed and boiled soybeans with Koji which is grains like rice or barley combined with mold and salt and yeast regardless of what type you choose miso is packed with probiotics and it's super versatile you can use it in soups marinades salad dressings I sometimes even throw it in baked goods next is tempeh so tempeh is similar to tofu in that it's made with soybeans but it's actually fermented and it has a chewiness and nutty texture and flavor that can be really nice not only is it a good source of probiotics but it's also a complete protein meaning it includes all the essential amino acids our body doesn't make itself last but not least is yogurt yogurt is made from fermenting milk so it's a rich source of probiotics and when the milk ferments the milk sugar AKA lactose is eaten by the bacteria so if you're lactose intolerant you might actually be able to enjoy some yogurts all also if you're vegan or dairy free there are plenty of non-milk options for yogurt that also contain probiotics it might sound a little creepy but we have as many microbes in our gut as we do cells in our body and it's important to be a good host if you look out for them they'll look out for you too thanks for watching and we'll see you next time
