Best home remedies for common cold

WFAA's Sonia Azad shares the best ways to fight a common cold and some things to consider researching before using.

If you're suffering from a cold. Not the flu, a cold. You might be desperate to try some different home remedies with the hopes of feeling better, maybe for you or a loved one. So which ones really are best? Doctors at Cleveland Clinic say herbal tea with a little honey and lemon is a good option. It can soothe those sore throats. And also Speaking of honey, by the way, research has shown a spoonful before bedtime can help a coughing child to sleep. Giving your body enough rest is also recommended, along with acetaminophen and ibuprofen to relieve body aches. Drink lots of fluids. Non caffeinated beverages are the best. So remember broth. Whatever kind of broth you like or whatever kind of soups you enjoy, whether it be chicken soup, lentil soup or any sort of miso soup, anything and everything that is water based that you can get in is quite helpful. OK, now doctors say it might be tempting to try some experimental remedies or supplements that you might be checking out online, but do be careful. They could wind up making you feel even worse. Now I have gotten emails from people who are like don't hate on supplements. I'm not hating on supplements. I'm just saying you have to be careful because they are not regulated by the FDA. So just food for thought. You mean just because the label in the bottle says it'll make you smarter, that's not that's not a proven just because the influencer. That's OK. Sorry. You know what marks been taking, right? What have you been taking? I didn't get my all my nutrition advice from TikTok. Yeah, he's so much smarter now, too. I can tell. OK, Greg, what about you? I know Greg's not taking. Greg listens to me. I do. I'm hanging on every word that you say I and I try to apply some of them anyway. Alright.

  11. I swear by garlic tea for curing a cold. At the first signs of feeling a cold coming on, I will sip a few cups of hot garlic tea throughout the day and my symptoms will disappear. I have been doing this for the past couple of years and it always works. Sometimes I will add ginger to the tea for added flavor and increased health benefits. Also, the ginger helps reduce the strong garlic odor.

Garlic tea is an herbal tonic made from lemon, honey, and garlic. When the tea is served hot, it is an excellent remedy for cold symptoms, such as congestion, runny nose and cough. The garlic oils inhibit cough and cold microbes, and they are effective decongestants. Lemon juice reduces and thins mucus, which makes it easier to unclog a stuffed up respiratory system. Lemon juice also changes the body's pH, making it less hospitable to viruses and bacteria.

Just fill a saucepan with three cups of water. Add 3-4 garlic cloves that have been peeled and cut in half. Bring the water to a boil. Remove from heat and let it steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Take out the garlic and then add 1/2 cup of lemon juice and 1/2 cup of honey. Sip at least a 1/2 cup of the hot tea, three times a day. Store the leftovers to reheat for later. It really works!

There was some research on foods that, if eaten alongside the garlic, seemed to destroy the odour. Some top performers included whole-milk plain yogurt, apples, lettuce, chicory, celery, potato, parsley, mint leaves, peppermint, basil, and mushrooms.
