and chief social impact and diversity officer at headspace Health wisdom Powell is joining me now for more on this wisdom according to the psychiatric times women of color seek adequate mental health care less than half as often as white women despite their higher risk for mental health problems is there a sense of why that is and how to fix it I'm glad you're asking this question because I think a longstanding misconception is that those resistances to seeking care are so attributable to individual attitudes when in fact the reasons for that lack of help-seeking are also rooted in historical um mistreatment and Malice by Health Care Systems a time in our history when medical um systems use Mental Health um and weaponized it in ways that uh forced institutionalization among black women and also rendered many black folks who were fighting for equal rights and civil rights um you know subjects to the mental health system so I think we have to pay attention to the historical alarms that get rung for black women when depressive symptomatology erupts for them or when they find their themselves standing at the edge of an emotional cliff and you say systemic racism and discrimination not only create barriers to care but they also have their own impact on black women's mental health can you talk more about that yes there's a longstanding scientific evidence-based to document that across time and in incidents and momentary incidents that racial discrimination and exposure to bias can produce deleterious impacts on one's mental health there are associations between exposure to racism and depression um associations between racism and anxiety U symptoms and they're also sadly associations between exposure to racism and outcomes like suicidal ideation so I think that we have to pay attention to the ways that those structural um you know exposures those environmental exposures get involved Ed by black women in ways that keep score and cause them in some ways to experience more um pronounced emotional um distress and burden all right Chief social impact and diversity officer at headspace Health wisdom pal always great to have you thank you you're so welcome hi everyone George Stephanopoulos here thanks for checking out the ABC News YouTube channel if you'd like to get more vide show highlights and watch live event coverage click on the right over here to subscribe to our Channel and don't for get to download the ABC News app for breaking news alerts thanks for watching

  1. Black women are being hunted stalked and surveilled by groups of therapists, crooks, the police and when they go to tell they are deemed crazy. This covert tactic is used to destroy zmart talented beautiful black women by causing trauma, suicide, reactive tactics by using covert tactics and psychological warfare. America is not what evryone thinks and neither is white America amd blackz that engage in tnis criminal behavior.

  14. There are practically no psychiatrists who take Medicaid.
    Non-Medicaid shrinks aren’t abundant either
Not to mention I certainly could never afford one

  15. We're always going to be at the bottom if you keep coming up with excuses for why we're there..It's 2024 and its time my people get rid of this losers attitude and start striving much higher..Apparently most of us cant even get I.D. thats how low you're ranked or seen in democrat eyes…If we cant do that what can we do?

  16. Are you a socialist? Do you agree with Joe Biden's socialist agenda? Do you support Joe Biden's policies? Why do you live here, in the capitalist country of the USA? My suggestion to you is to go to Cuba, or Venezuela or maybe China (communist country) and stop being a hypocrite, saying that you support socialist ideology and live in a capitalist country. Do you love buying products like cell phones, laptops and traveling around the world without government control? Buying a car and owning your own home? Then you're a capitalist. Think about it, people.

  17. I'm pretty sure trans can solve it.🌈 Black women need more lgbt education.

  18. Why did you say black to women?
Why do you constantly engage in racism?
    Just a woman

  19. Is this real?……Seems like it's made up in delusional land…..ABC News happy to spread the nonsense to their indoctrinated ignoramus viewers….
