Grundfos 26-99 Circulation Pump Noise – What are your thoughts?

In this video, I’m actually asking for your input and expertise. I have a Grundfos 26-99 circulation pump that is making a noise that is pretty annoying at times. I don’t think it’s cause for alarm, but I do believe it means I’m going to need a new pump, or a pump cartridge at some point. The cartridge that has all the moving parts can be removed from the pump and replaced individually. I believe that cartridge will fit ALL the 26-99 series pumps, but I want to make sure. Also, if you happen to have parts for one of these pumps, or any of the Honeywell V8043F1036 replacement powerheads I also show that you want to get rid of free or really cheap, let me know. I would certainly appreciate any help you guys can offer.

all righty guys i need your help on this one i am standing in front of my hydronic heating system looking at my grunfus i don’t know if that’s the way you pronounce it 26-99 pump hopefully you can hear that the humming sound i’m gonna put the phone against the pump to see if it transmits through as well [Music] i have not seen the pump with that exact part number which has got me a little bit puzzled but these if you see they have these hex head screws on four sides you can take this portion completely off of the flange portion back here and this thankfully has a check valve in it and i’ve got a shutoff over on this so these isolate thankfully because whoever put this system in didn’t put a shut off over here i found a lot of things the people that put this system in didn’t do right such as this pump isn’t supposed to be mounted this way these really are supposed to be vertical mounts i mean it’ll work like this but i think because it is mounted like this if you listen to that get some dust on it doesn’t it and it’s echoing through the pipes catch up against one of the pipes right now i think the bearings are starting to go bad now if you look at this little screw on the end that actually attaches to a cylinder that mounts in here i think grenfell calls these the cartridge and you can take the cartridge which is all the moving parts out of this just kind of tap this on this end lightly once you get this body off and the whole thing will come out and you can replace it they do make a replacement cartridge for this and it’s a whole lot cheaper than buying the whole body but my question is i don’t find that part number anywhere i do find the ups 26-99 in a different part number that says the cartridge fits and i think the cartridge fits any of the 26-99s this is where i need your guys help i want to verify that before i spend 180 bucks to replace to buy that so one that buzzing that you hear is that a bearing wearing out i think a bearing is wearing out and the arm the um armature or whatever it’s called that spins inside there is starting to brush up against the edge somewhere just ever so slightly i think that might be what that is it’s not bad it’ll probably run like this for the rest of the winter and i may let it run like this for the rest of the winter until i save up a little bit of money so i don’t have a lot of that let me not know what you guys think anybody out there that’s had experience with these tell me what your thoughts are can i just replace that cartridge in this regardless of the model number and i’m good to go and if anybody wants to sponsor me to find out let me know i mean like i said i’m not made of money here uh i try to do some of this stuff by myself and i’ve got a ton of uh zone valves to replace i got one done but i’ve got one over there that sticks open these are working but that one right there if i wiggle the wire for the motor the wrong way it’ll stop working so there’s like a a break almost inside the motor so i gotta replace this these don’t have the adapter plates on the back of them they’re the original pre mid 80s ones that’s a solid unit so i’ve got to buy the power head and the adapter plate and with shipping that’s like 90 bucks times four of those things i’m looking at almost 400 bucks worth of power valves there or zone valves at least the powerhead and uh adapter plate so any help would be appreciated any of you guys that are heater you know if you’ve got any of these that you’re not using laying around uh collecting dust let me know i’ll take whatever help i can get so anyway thanks for watching guys um let me know what your thoughts are on this this sound though i don’t think it’s gonna cause any harm and i think it’ll run like this for a long time my only problem is my bathroom is just right up above here and it echoes in there because it’s that going through all these pipes and it gets rather annoying so thanks for any help you guys can help uh you can offer

  1. Hey……..I am NOW having this EXACT same problem. What did you do to fix it??? I am worried I may have to get a new pump!??!

  2. mine is mounted vertically and i still have the noise problem

  3. Bearing is getting noisy and will eventually fail.

  4. I suggest you and everyone reading this search more and read what other people have to say, most suggest a whole raft of things to check first, like header tank water levels and bleeding air out of the system before dismantling or replacing the pump.

  5. I had a similar noise problem only louder. The outside of the pump was hot. I noticed the little square hole on the right side of the pump. I sprayed some WD 40 it it and turned the pump on a d off a few times and after a bit the noise stopped

  6. Bear in mind that these pumps have a motor run capacitor in the terminal case. This can fail partially or totally. It's easy to find replacements (the value is printed on the motor label). Partial failure can cause the motor to run rough or hot or both. Total failure will mean the pump won't even start.

  7. 1:17 That pump mounting is perfectly fine. You can mount it in any orientation where the motor shaft is horizontal. What you cannot do is mount the pump with the motor shaft tilted or vertical, so you can't mount the pump with the face up or down. The installation instructions are readilly available with a quick google search.

  8. I would just replace the whole pump and once it starts humming the bearing assembly is failing. Just replace it I live in Alaska and replace mine every 4 years. It will always go out at the least convenient time. When the pump fails you have NO heat transfer and since my boiler powers my hot water heater I won't even have hot water….
