Mental Health Matters- Time Management

[Music] hello my name is sandy hurst i'm a district school counselor with our mental health wellness department i want to talk to you today about time management and organizational skills many times in our life we are stressed and anxious due to these two things today i want to share some strategies to help you lessen your stress and be prepared for success what is time management it is the process of organizing and planning how to divide time between specific activities good time management helps you work smarter not harder this requires us to shift our thought that being busy is not the same as being effective let me say that again being busy is not the same as being effective being in a frenzy of activity many times will cause us to achieve less and increase our stress the benefits of learning time management skills can change your life how by reducing your stress anxiety reduces the fear of failure improves your confidence helps your overall days run much smoother and this is something we can learn not just as students but also as adults our 35th president john f kennedy once said we must use time as a tool and not a crutch how true that is by understanding that working time as a tool and not as an excuse produces a much more balanced productive you so here are some tips to start today not not yesterday not tomorrow but today so first prioritize prioritize your tasks by importance meaning what has to be done first start by making a to-do list daily weekly monthly whatever works best for you to keep you on track this helps you drop the constant mental checklist that we try to do to keep up with every day i'm guilty i understand that that's why i'm the sticky note queen it seems the second thing after prioritize is organize by focusing on the most important and quickest tasks that need to be completed first so if you've got something's quick and easy to do do it first then go to the next level of what needs to be done when you start prioritizing and organizing then it sets up the big picture for the week break larger tasks into smaller pieces reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed many times when i talk with students that's the number one thing they don't break it down into smaller pieces and then they're overwhelmed and then nothing gets done so that's very important use your phone your tablet planner set timers goal timelines to stay focused that's what these phones you like your phone so that's a great way to use to help you keep you on track and meeting those deadlines limit distractions the next thing limit time on devices set a time for work on tasks that need to be done and completed set alarms to help you i know it doesn't take much when we start going down the rabbit holes when we get on facebook or instagram or tick tock or snapchat or we start netflix and because then we get away from the task that needs to be completed so limit those distractions setting timers and that will allow you the media time plus other times to get the jobs done that needs to be done to keep your life runner much smoother and another one is lastly let go of perfection you always maintain high but attainable standards and be realistic about what you can accomplish do your dead level best on any assignment or task that has to be completed but don't beat yourself up on perfection hard work and doing your best says much more than perfection ever will seek help when you need it ask a lot of times people are willing to help you and you just don't ask so ask for help strive for excellence and continuous growth instead of perfection you got this so make a plan today manage your time and organization increases our success and work in daily life i promise you a promise it will reduce stress anxiety and will enhance all areas of your life and in turn produce a more balanced you i end this quote with a quote from michael at schuler who is an entrepreneur and speaker he says the bad news is time flies the good news is you're the pilot have a great day [Music] you
