living longer it sounds nice we've all thought about it but there are certain places in the world called Blue zones where people just live longer without any strict diet expensive Foods supplements or rigorous exercise routine it probably sounds too good to be true but it's true our next guest has some answers for us in his latest book on Blue zones and he also has a new Netflix series out let's take a look at it what's the best tea to drink on a daily basis wine I like the way you roll I have found that most of what people think lead to a long healthy life is misguided or just plain wrong what if we could reverse engineer longevity I spent the last 20 years trying to do just that joining us now is New York Times best-selling author Nat Geo fellow award-winning journalist and producer and that list goes on but we don't have the time damn view nurse in studio with us Dan thank you so much and you know people will start by listening to that and going oh he has a silver bullet he he knows how to do this but this book and your research for 20 years shows that it is not a silver bullet that it's actually a lot of different things right and you found these places tell us about them and why you wrote this book well on assignment for National Geographic we we set out to reverse engineer longevity so instead of looking for it in a test tube or a petri dish we work with demographers to find areas around the world where we know people are making it to 90 and 100 the highest rates without the diseases that are killing Americans and then we brought a second wave of scientists to find out the common denominators or the correlates and no matter where you go in Asia or Latin America North America or Europe essentially the same things are showing up over and over and over again at producing long-lived people and what are some of those things well if you want to know what 100 year old ate to live to be a hundred you would have to know what they were eating their whole lives so we got dietary surveys over the past hundred years in all five blue zones and we found that overwhelmingly they're eating a whole food plant-based diet the five foods in every Blue Zone are whole grains green tubers like sweet potato nuts and beans and if you're eating a cup of beans a day you're probably not only getting all your protein in most your fiber but also It's associated with living an extra four years exercise and supplements because I'm I know from just talking to you before we went on so fascinating is no it's not just about food so exercise supplements 151 billion dollar a year industry um I know you say exercise has something to do with it but supplements well actually I I think exercise is an unmitigated Public Health failure only 23 percent of Americans get the minimum which is about 15 minutes a day in blue zones they're not pumping iron or going to the gym they simply live in places where every time they go to work at occasions of walk they have Gardens out back and they haven't they don't use all the mechanical conveniences that have engineered physical activity out of our Lives they keep their metabolisms higher all day long because they're nudged into movement and that seems to be the big idea you spent time in these blue zones you're spending more time in them coming up um what is it about a place like Sardinia or Okinawa that they're doing something that we hear in America or not see that's just it you know in America we longevity we think I want to live longer I want to be healthy healthier to find this diet I'm going to find this supplementary regimen I'm going to get on this biohack and I'm going to get healthier and blue they don't do any of that longevity ensues they are simply a product of their environment this was this was interesting I I asked you if I wanted to do this you know personally how long would it take for me to get started you say about a month but it's beyond what I want to do right it's what my community is doing and when you talk about the community around you whether it's a blue zone or anywhere uh that that we're living it's not just exercise it's not just these choices you make you say the unconscious choices it's even about who you hang out with yes if your three best friends are obese and unhealthy there's about 150 percent better chance that you'll be overweight yourself you know there are areas in Kentucky where the life expectancy is 20 years less than that of say Boulder Colorado that's not because people in Kentucky aren't good Americans but they just live in an environment where it's much harder to be healthy and find healthy food and and move so you're in the right environment to make the best decisions for you a place like Singapore you talk about Singapore what did they do in Singapore to Buck the trends and increase average life expectancy so I know I announced that Singapore is a new Blue Zone it's in the book and it's it's a Blue Zone in my lifetime they've seen life expectancy go up by almost 25 years they now have the longest healthiest life expectancy in the world that's because they it's not because people in singaporeans have better diets they just live in a place where healthy food is subsidized and junk food is taxed driving your car is taxed and and walking is subsidized they're very hard on drugs and the most interesting thing uh if your aging parent lives with you or within about 500 yards you get a tax break and that kind of assures that older people are cared for and doesn't rely so heavily on retirement homes which aren't necessarily healthy all right Dan thank you so much the book is the blue zones secrets for living longer and it's out today and the Netflix series is streaming starting tomorrow Dan Singapore is one of them
In Icaria in Greece and Costa Rica were simply misreporting their ages in order to enjoy state pensions for longer. They are not longevityChampions but scam bugs Champions!
As a singaporean, our diet isnt one of the worst, our diet OUTSIDE our homes is literally the worst but the prices arent what you would call affordable now, hawker food is at around $4-6 sgd= $2.50-4 usd while 300g of fresh budget vegetables cost less than $2 sgd or $1.6 usd approximately, the system is evolving towards one that encourages people to eat at home rather than outside
Blue Zones / anti-aging has been totally disproved. Take a look at other podcasts.
I'm pretty sure it's genetics.
"a cup of beans a day=prob getting most of your protein." At this point, I had to stop listening
Surround yourself with genuine kind honest people , move your body , do what you love ! Eat good nutrition food and chocolate too , live simple, sing , drum , walk in nature . Service is a biggie , laugh daily , hug more and most of all a deep connection with God/source/ Divine consciousness❤
Total BS about beans. One cup is no where close to enough Protein. Eat EGGS … 2/3rds of your Diet should be Fat & Protein.
In Singapore healthcare schemes are elaborated easily accessible. The parks and exercise facilities are everywhere. HDB flats are not big not too small and u have no choice but to go out for a walk every day!
i rather live shorter and enjoy my life, than bend over backward to live an extra 5 years being old, frail,
Basically live like it’s 100 years ago, then you are in the blue zone.
Do these things if you want to never get sick, never get depressed, never go to hospitals, and have a long lifespan:
1 Be omnivorous and eat in moderation 95% certified organic food until you feel satisfied, not bloated.
2 Totally avoid fast food, junk food, and all (il)legal drugs, including coffee, tobacco, and alcohol.
3 Exercise moderately three or four times a week, fast once a week from 24 to 38 hours, sleep from eight to 10 hours a day, laugh a lot, have awesome orgasms, and above all love a lot. 💕☮🌎🌌
When you help your family you help the government not to have to provide so many social services
The car makes you have higher blood sugar because you don't walk as much.
The thing to do is get out of super stressful places.
True fact: The nation with the highest life expectancy, Hong Kong has the highest percentage of meat consumption per capita in the world…explain that vegan idiots…
The genetic factor is also a big part. On my mother’s side of family almost everyone lives to their 90s unless they compromise their health with extreme lifestyle risks. I actually have an ancestor on this side of my family that fought in the revolution war and lived to be 96 years old. He never lived in a blue zone. The environmental factors are an enormous part of the increase in life expectancy in mass.
I plan to reach the age of 150 by the end of my life.
debunked 100%
This is dangerous. You are confusing correlation to causation.
Eating healthy and remaining active are one thing, but another thing all of those people have in common is that they are all light spirited, and careless. None of them live in big cities, and work corporate jobs, with deadlines etc. Watching cows, and planting vegetables isn't exactly a lot of pressure lol They don't have real ambitions. If everybody was like that, we would be 200 years behind in technology. Even the guy who made this Netflix documentary said that he spent most of his life travelling the world on a bicycle..He doesn't have a family either, no kids, no stress or anything.
LOL. Stay away from sugar, processed foods and seed oils. Get off the couch and move your ass. Be a good person to others and yourself and the blue zone is within you. Not a secret.
Red meat is the answer or just meat period.
Brillant! I love this está of thinking. And living! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I GUESS AFRICA DOES NOT EXIST? THE WORLDS LARGEDST CONTINENT HAS NO "NATURAL" ENVIRONMENTS? YOU SOUND LIKE A CHEAP TRAVEL AGENT.
THIS SO-CALLED RESEARCH IS WEAK AND NON-INCLUSIVE. MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT, WILL NOT AND CANNOT LIVE IN SOME TINY, RURAL, DISCONNECTED ISLAND OR HAMLET.
ANY FOOL KNOWS GOOD FOOD IS BETTER. AND ASIA IS FULL OF SHORT LIFESPANS AND INCREDIBLY UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLES. SINGAPORE IS A TINY ODDITY AND THE WORLD IS FULL OF SUCH PLACES. YOU JUST THINK THAT RURAL EUROPEAN AND ASIAN PEOPLES ARE SOMEHOW PURE AND FREE? THEY SMOKE LIKE MANIACS, GAMBLE AND BEAT THEIR WIVES, DRINK EXCESSIVELY BETWEEN THE SALADS AND GARDENING.
THE SUDANESE, WITHOUT WAR, LIVE VERY KLONG ON AS NATURAL DIET POSSIBLE IN HUMAN LIFE. ALMOST EVERY SOCIETY, NOT CORRUPTED BY WESTERN BIG PHAMA AND FOOD POISONING, EATS FRESH AND NATURALLY AND LIVES WITHOUT ALL THE DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES AND NONSENSE THAT YOUR BELOVED ASIA AND EUROPE.
MOST OF GHANA IS DIRT POOR AND ONLY EATS FOOD LOCALLY FARMED AND GROWN. SO DOES MOST OF THE WORLD, SO MAKE SOME REAL COMPARISONS AND NOT ALL THESE "SOUND BITE" TRIVIAL SURFACE DEPICTIONS OF ASRDINIA AND OTHER MEANINGLESS ENCLAVES.
MAYBE ONE DAY YOU MIGHT REALLY DO SOME REALITY RESEARCH AND SEE HOW POOR PEOPLE REALLY LIVE AND WHY THEY ALL CANNOT STILL LIVE IN RURAL HAMLETS AND VILLAGES.
Haha. Plant based diet in Sardinia where suckling pig is the favorite delicacy. Good one
I BELIEVE THIS GUY IS 100% CORRECT, I'M DECIDING WHERE TO LIVE THE REST OF MY LIFE.
