Live Bearded, Brother!
doing the right things for your beard is important but more important is avoiding the wrong things and while you might think a shorter beard is easier to groom and maintain it can be just as hard to get it right my name is Spencer and I'm one of the founders here at live bearded and in this video I'm going to discuss the top five mistakes to avoid when maintaining a short beard mistake number one trimming trouble now one of the most common mistakes we see when perfecting a short beard is improper trimming we see this all the time and with a short beard your trimmer guards are going to be your best friend they're going to help give you the exact length and look you desire now I always recommend grabbing the guards before you put them on the trimmer and start trimming you want to do a dry run to really gauge how much hair it's going to take off before you start actually trimming I always recommend starting with a longer guard as you can take more off you can't put it back on so do your dry run run it up and down see the hairs that are sticking over the trimmer guard and really gauge how much you're going to take off before you start trimming now once you get your beard dialed in and trimmed to Perfection right down the L lengths you used in each section of your beard so you remember for next time the last thing you want to do is use a two on your Sideburn and think you used a one you take it too short and then now doesn't quite look right mistake number two hydration neglect now many guys are short beards don't think that they need beard oil and that couldn't be further from the truth you see beard oil is actually designed for the skin under the beard not just the beard hairs themselves so regardless of how long your beard is you really should be applying beard oil daily to avoid itch irritation and promot healthier better beard Growth work it into your morning grooving routine just as you brush your teeth and apply deodorant dab a few drops into your hands massage them into the skin under the beard for best results mistake number three undefined borders now the smallest little difference in positioning your beard lines can make or break your beard and not setting borders to your beard well it just really just tells the world that you're lazy and don't give a damn so it's important you get these lines right the first time there are three lines you need to trim in to shape your beard and really Define it the Top Line the back line and the neckline now the top line should be trimmed in as high as naturally possible this is your cheek line and the idea is to really just trim away any Rogue hairs growing above the bulk of the beard now if you have thinner cheeks super common just work with what you got still recommend keeping these lines as high as naturally possible while chin straps may have been cool at some point in the past actually I don't think they were cool ever and they're really honestly still not cool don't want you to see those cheek lines trimmed Too Far Low giving you a chin strap it's not a good look all right now for the back line you want this line to run off the back of the Sideburn down to the corner of your jaw at a slight angle back to the back of your neck often times we see guys take this line much too far forward and it really gives you a weird side profile so you want this naturally curv back towards the back of the neck and lastly is the neckline this one is often gone wrong and is taken much too high by trimming on the jawline guys you don't want to trim on a jaw you want to trim this really where the head connects to the neck A good rule of thumb is is about a finger width above the Adams apple and shorter beards you guys have a little bit of Grace here you can go slightly higher than if you're planning to grow a full long beard because the lower you are the more neck hairs you get for that nice full long beard but with the short beard you can afford to take this up a little higher just don't take it on the jawline you want to come underneath again where the head connects to the neck mistake number four neglecting maintenance in order to maintain a consistently good look when your beard is short you need to trim much more often and here's why a week or two of growth may not noticeable for someone with a long or medium beard because the added length is really negligible in comparison to the overall existing beard length with the short beard that week or two honestly is super noticeable because the beard is so short to start with that means you may need to trim much more regularly to avoid your beard looking noticeably different over time so to combat this I recommend you create a grooming routine where you create time really every single week consistently to go through your standard settings and trim your beard this may be Sunday thing for you to get ready for the week and you grab your trimmer you grab the guards that you know that you wrote down from last time and you you set in those guards at the different lengths in your beard to get that consistent dialed in beer trim creating this weekly routine will be super helpful to avoid missing a week it may turn into two weeks and then 3 weeks and then before you know you've gone a month without trimming your beard and it looks like a mess mistake number five impatience and growth rush now this last mistake is honestly something that we all struggle with when growing a beard regardless of the length of beard going after your beard only grows about a/ inch per month so those first few weeks may be slower than expected don't give up on growing your beard and finding the length that you really want just make sure you set your expectations so that you are going into this with eyes wide open you know what to expect and you don't quit too early it's also worth noting that any thin spots that you might have may come in Fuller over time as different hairs on your chin and your Sideburn different areas of your beard are going to grow at different rates and depending on the short beard style that you're after you might actually want the chin hairs be longer so it's really important to have clear expectations have some patience and not rush through being disappointed if your Beard's not we you thought it should be after 30 or 60 days it may just take a little bit longer and that's okay all right guys that's all I have for you today I hope you found this video helpful it's our mission to help beardsmen look feel and be their best so if you have any questions about this or anything at As a 17 year old who has been shaving wrong for years(just clean shaving) now Im thinking about growing it out and this is very helpful
OK, I am 67 and at about 30 days for a first time beard. Having been in the military and law enforcement, I just never was able to go more than a week without shaving. Because of going bald and shaving my head and now going into Winter, I thought that I would give it a try. I use an oil daily and brush it. The mustache and chin are thick but the sides are pretty thin. I was happy to hear that it may take more than 60 days to come into being. Thanks for the positive info in your video.
The unnecessary background music was distracting from what you were saying.
Subscribed today have a short beard, I use beard shampoo and conditioner every 2 days along with beard oil, any advice? Thanks
Beard butter or beard balm for a shorter beard?
bro lower the music, its very annoying.
About trimming direction, is better to go downward or upward?
Lose the music otherwise nice video
Thanks for the advice, i am growing my first beard and almost 50. Regarding the music, i personally did not really notice it. Thanks again.
Just started growing mine after 34 years in the Army. It’s so nice not having to shave everyday!
A good video, but the music is very distracting
Thanks Spencer for the useful info. Live Bearded is the best brother. I like the background music in the video but I have one request for future videos. The volume of the music makes it hard to hear you speaking. Otherwise the content and illustrations are awesome. Thanks for all you and your crew do.
When using beard guards on a short beard, is it better to shave up or down? Also, is using just one length guard good for the entire beard?
You look so alpha with your beard 💯💪 very nice 👍
Growing mine back out after a few years with a naked chin. Full stach…. Always!
I have a recommendation. I would suggest to not have the music in the background so loud it’s kind a hard to hear what you’re saying even when I have the volume turned up inside the vehicle through Bluetooth, your voice is getting drowned out by the background music.
You boys have Facebook my beard grow so slow 😢
LOL you should see the epically manicured chinstrap I had like 12 years ago and then maybe you'd change your mind, Spence 😂
Solid advice. The weekly routine is key.
