hello my name is julia zumpano i'm a registered dietitian at the cleveland clinic with the department of preventive cardiology today i'm going to discuss whether or not there is a cardiac diet there are several diets that can support cardiac health the main diet that we tend to encourage the most often is the mediterranean diet the mediterranean diet is high in fruits vegetables grains and fish extra virgin olive oil and nuts and it really minimizes processed foods packaged foods and salty foods the dash diet is a diet that is helpful to lower hypertension which is also high blood pressure dash stands for dietary approach to stop hypertension or high blood pressure so again it is a similar diet to the mediterranean diet focusing on fruits vegetables and grains does encourage dairy low-fat dairy and meatless meals the dash diet also takes it a step further to reduce sodium levels or salt in the diet another common diet that is known to be heart healthy is a plant-based diet also known as a vegan or vegetarian diet that is when there's the avoidance of animal products this can be considered heart healthy because it does restrict or limit the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol on the diet now oftentimes plant-based diets can include some unhealthy snacks poor choices are made so if a plant-based diet is being chosen for cardiac heart health then really focusing on minimally processed foods and whole foods being the foundation of the diet you

  3. So how do patients know which diet to choose from? The Dash diet is a no-brainer, but how does a patient choose the between the Mediterranean and plant-based diet. The Mediterranean and plant-based diets contradict each other in every way.
