ECCO14: Cancer prevention strategies

Professor Peter Boyle, International Prevention Research Institute

Cancer prevention strategies

Prof. Boyle discusses the issue of world cancer disparities such as risk factors and treatment and how the International Prevention Research Institute is working on prevention strategies.

first and foremost is that the risk to an individual of dying is coming down bizarrely but what is incredibly Rising what Rising incredibly quickly is because of the Aging of the population is the global cancer burden so although the mortality rates are coming down quite nicely in many countries the burden of incident and the burden of mortality are going up because of the strong aging of the population so you take the whole of Europe including the Russian Federation and 2004 there was one there was 2.9 Million cases of cancer that had risen to 3.2 million in 2006 and that rise is essentially due to the rapid aging of the population well uran plus has been an incredibly brilliant opportunity to look into the future to see what's going to happen and try and shape the future we all know that Europe doesn't kick its weight in terms of the number of cancer researchers and the output that they have so what we're trying to do with this mandated by the European Parliament is to come up with a strategy for increasing coordination and Co collaboration in cancer research in Europe going forward we've identified several key areas where we really can make a difference but the important thing is to try and make sure that everyone makes a contribution directly not merely by replicating what other people are doing we don't lose time we don't lose money we spend everything more wisely and we move the European cancer Asser in ahead quite quickly
