Healthy relationships – elementary (English)
This video discusses the importance of building positive relationships with a variety of people in our lives, and describes what healthy friendships and relationships look and feel like.
[Music] There are lots of different people in our lives and each of them has a different role. Some are family members, others are friends, teachers or community members. No matter why they are in our lives, building positive relationships is an important part of our happiness, growth, and success. Each of us has unique needs, and we depend on healthy friendships to be our best selves. Respecting zones of comfort is important in any relationship. When we're treated with care, respect, and kindness, it means a lot. Be understanding of others and think about how comfortable and safe they feel. In a healthy relationship, you're an equal. You should be able to be yourself and feel safe, trusting, and supported. Having good relationships and connecting with others can help you feel good about yourself. Positive friendships can help us feel happier, and less stressed, and even help you handle difficult things. Technology and the internet make it possible for so many to connect in different parts of the world. But having hundreds of friends online isn't quite the same as having a few close ones you can get along with on a deeper level. It's great to have virtual buddies. Just make sure you see friends in the real world as well. Sometimes there are friendships where things happen that can cause feelings of stress, worry, sadness, and confusion. Mean or hurtful behavior can lead to an unhealthy relationship. If you're not sure if this is happening for you, you can always talk to a trusted adult or your teacher, school counselor, or other helping adults at school. It's important to value the positive relationships and figure out the negative ones. If a friend is causing more pain and problems than joy and happiness, it's time to think about whether to be in that relationship. You might need to take a break from it or make a list of the good and not so good things. Never feel you have to be in a friendship that makes you unhappy. Take your time and decide what's best for you. Above all, remember that relationships matter. You don't have to be friends with everyone you meet, and you may become closer to some people than others. Just know that healthy and happy friendships contribute to a healthy and happy life. [Music]
