This video is about the benefits of minimalism (for mental health and to reduce stress). I think, for many people minimalism is more like a lifestyle an umbrella term for simple home decor / living. But it's really more than that. So I want to share why I think minimalism helps with stress and other issues in everyday life.

So, in a way, minimalism is a kind of mindfulness practice, or at least it can be. Minimalism is pretty helpful with stress reduction, I'm pretty convinced of that. Things can weigh us down in ways that we don't even understand, or that we are not aware of. I personally chose minimalism to feel more free and calm, and it worked. hey hey my name is andina this video was about the mental health benefits or psychological benefits of minimalism and how it has helped me in the past i think that the minimalist lifestyle can help with a lot of things that stress us out in everyday life and i want to share my thoughts on this with you the first thing that has helped me to reduce especially work stress is that my minimalist environment at home in my apartment really helps me to wind down better when i come home from a stressful workday from a cluttered office and believe me developers offices or offices where a lot of physicists or scientists work in general are not very tidy usually a lot of measurement instruments are laying around there so this has been like a big stressor for me so i found that when i have like a clean and tidy and very minimal apartment then when i come home it helps me a lot to wind down to have that clear safe space without any visual clutter and it even helps me to be less stressed when i am in a cluttered environment later because i always know that i can go back to that place that my apartment is there waiting for me and it will be the room that i need after stressful days so just knowing that really helps me to deal with the cluttered environment better i mean maybe at that point you're thinking something like what i don't have a problem with other people's clutter in some office or what but for me that really was an issue and just knowing that i had my apartment where there was almost no stuff in it really helped me to get through the day because i was always looking forward to to coming home to that safe space so yeah anyway point number two i really enjoy the fact that as a minimalist you really don't have a lot of cleaning to do or you don't have to tidy up so much because everything has its place it's really done super fast i need five minutes to clean up my room tops and that really saves me a lot of time and i think that a lot of the daily stress that we experience comes from being in a hurry and not having enough time to do the things that we want to do and i want to be able to spend that time with my family with my kid or maybe in nature or on some hobby like filming these videos so having more time in general makes me less stressed and i think that's the case for a lot of people isn't it now my point number three is the visual calm i mean it's kind of the same point number one but i just wanted to put a little emphasis on that again because it is so important to me as a minimalist and i think it's a reason for many people who um take on that journey to become a minimalist that they are seeking some sort of visual calm of a clutter-free environment and for me this comes with things like simplistic furniture or muted colors because for me like very intense colors i think they feel almost loud they they are shouting at me it's hard to explain but i have this with numbers and also with the colors and they just produce a certain emotions or certain impressions like even i think i associate numbers with colors and i also associate colors with sounds so i don't know maybe someone has the same um weird experience then let me know in the comments because um yeah well that is one of the reasons why i like muted colors because i don't think they are so loud i think that they are more calm or relaxing and i also rarely use decorations i have these little branches here in the foreground and um i thought they would be nice in the video um but in general i only take things from nature and i don't really like to decorate my room in any way special way with a lot of things so all this stuff i don't know just i like clean walls i like white walls and simple muted colors white furniture and this kind of stuff is pretty cliche and i think that the benefit of that is really that it is less stressful for the brain it is less stressful for the eye and when you look at these things they all match they all give you this calm picture like a little bit like a catalogue but more human anyway next point is not having to search for anything really but my files on the computer sometimes but i also have a system for that so if you want to know then let me know in the comments because i rarely ever look for anything neither files on my computer nor things in my kitchen the kitchen is a very good example actually because just um think of a drawer that you you open the door and you have to look inside and do you have to look do you have to take a close look do you have to search for anything because i really don't like doing that i like to take like one quick look and grab my tool and be done and having a lot of unused space i mean like a new space is good space for me and it saves a lot of time and also i don't know it produces like a feeling of gratitude like just opening the drawer and there's not almost nothing in there or only like the absolutely necessary things and that is just such a good feeling to to know you have so little things but you have everything that you need and you don't need to waste any time on your things so i think overall this this feeling of gratitude is completely associated with this minimalist lifestyle for me and it makes me happy to be able to save time and to look at my things and to see everything that i have and not be overwhelmed and it just makes me it's like it sounds so stupid but it's really like that every day that i just enjoy not having much stuff i don't know i think if you're a minimalist you probably get it and if you're just looking into minimalism then maybe you're intrigued now anyway the last thing that i want to mention is um the effort of saving time over saving space i rambled a lot about space before because i really enjoy it and how it looks but overall i find it very important that if not having enough time stresses you out then maybe you should put emphasis on saving time first before just saving space and having a clutter free and whatever you know just basic idea of saving time whatever that means for you if that just means um getting your things in order and finding a place for all the things that you have if that is like the first goal that you have that's perfectly fine it's um it's not the definition competition so um just focus on the important things first and then you know move forward step by step the most important thing here is i think is finding routines that work for you like a workflow in in your office even or also a morning routine or an evening routine that just stays the same like every day you do this every day i get up and i do yoga and i have my matcha and or makeup coffee whatever so there is this consistency that comes back every day and in general routines make people feel more safe and they are something you can rely on in a stressful time because you just have to recall them your brain already knows that but in a stressful situation you can rely on your routine and then you can use it and it will give you back some of your calm so i have found that this helps me a great deal because i don't want to rush anything i want to rely on my routines i want to try and save time so that i have time for things that are really needed for because for instance when i have to work when they have a stressful work day ahead i still want to make that time for my yoga session or for having my cup of tea or whatever and to be able to do that to be able to prioritize this is all part of this minimalist mindset and yeah i think i think that's it

  2. I enjoyed this video. You spoke of the place for everything and in computer science there are these 2 different types of collections. 1. A list 2 A dictionary. To find something in a list you need to look at each and everything in the list to see if the thing is what you are looking for until you find your item. In a dictionary every value has a unique key. So, you go directly to where the value or item you are looking for and this saves time. It is the same thing with having a place for everything. Your brain builds the key value set, but once you know its place you just go directly to the right place to get the item.

  5. me again today – youtube keeps suggesting your videos, and i'm not complaining. just jumping in to say that i also have the numbers=colours synestesia, but i don't hear colours.
    i always thought the numbers=colours might come from kids blocks with coloured numbers that many kids have when they are wee little, and some sudies seem to have found some correlation.

  8. I do like a lot of colors… it makes me feel at home. I don’t like the idea of alot of stuff in my cabinets and wardrobe. Therefore I only keep clothes that are my favorite (so my whole dressing exists out of 60 pieces that I adore) and stuff that I use. All the rest I donate or give away. I feel mentally at unease and stressed by the mere thought of the stuff that I don’t use and that’s stored in my home… so I guess my minimalism is more mentally aimed while yours is maybe more visual? 🙂

  11. I like muted colours too, and generally tones of the environment around me. For most of the year that means greys, browns, soft greens, grey-blues and off-white. My comfort with brighter colours seems to increase in summer when there are colourful flowers around and bright sunlight de-saturates colours a bit. I know just what you mean ab out feeling like the colours are screaming at you. Bright colours are sometimes described in English as 'loud' and I think that is very apt.

    That being said, even though it does sound pretty cliche as you said, I truly understand your point (nude colors, empty walls..), and the fact that you've been minimalist for such a long time can only tell that this is your true self speaking 🙂
    I might consider myself being a minimalist, even though I don't really like labels.. I've always had a tendency for tidying up and as far as I can remember it, and would never know what thing to ask for my birthday as I was content with what I already owned (my mum was calling me blasé). I've been enjoying decluttering my belongings these past few years and really like the clearing process and result of course! However I do wonder if by seeing all these minimalist contents here and there, I would not be influenced by my surroundings. I personally don't mind colors, I like them even, however need a tidy space at all time which is not easy with a walking baby! I don't identity myself as the 'cliche minimalist' you described 🙂 But I also believe that daily objects can be decor on their own, such as nice pottery pots in the kitchen, displaying a design coffee maker, I just bought some locally made cotton panels (bronzey orangey color!) that a taylor will make a duvet cover out of: that will add a nice touch of color and decor to the bedroom without doing too much (nothing on the wall yet). I don't say no to a few photos and artworks on the walls even though I remember my sister would always point the fact that I would barely hang anything on the walls of my student studio! Simplicity girl!
