1:03 Foods to avoid for hypothyroidism
4:00 Discover the best foods for hypothyroidism!
Let’s talk about the top foods to avoid if you have a hypothyroid condition.
Goitrogens are things that cause a goiter. A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. Goitrogenic foods interfere with certain enzymes and hormones and can lead to a goiter.
Foods to avoid for hypothyroidism:
1. Cassava
2. Lima beans
3. Sorgum
4. Sweet potato
5. Flax seed
6. Cruciferous vegetables
7. Millet
8. Soy products
9. Onions
10. Gluten
If you have cruciferous vegetables in very small amounts (less than five ounces), it shouldn’t be a problem.
Cooking, steaming, or fermenting cruciferous vegetables also reduces their goitrogenic effect. Having sea kelp as well may also help.
You would also want to avoid anything that depletes selenium, iodine, iron, and vitamin A.
Good sources of selenium and iodine:
• Seafood
• Sea kelp
• Sea salt
Good sources of iron:
• Red meat
• Animal products
Good sources of vitamin A:
• Egg yolks
• Butter
• Cod liver oil
• Beef liver

Thanks for watching! I hope this increases your awareness of the top foods to avoid for hypothyroidism. I’ll see you in the next video.
let's talk about the foods that you definitely need to avoid if you have a thyroid problem specifically a hypothyroid condition and so the biggest thing that you need to be aware of are these things called goitrogens now what is a goitregen it's things that cause a goiter okay now what is a goiter basically a goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland and the thyroid gland is right at the bottom of your neck about two and a half inches wide so when that thing starts swelling up that's called the goiter and there are foods that cause that and those are the foods that you need to avoid because what they do is they interfere with certain enzymes and they stimulate certain enzymes and they increase certain other hormones like they increase the thyroid stimulating hormone which comes down from the pituitary and then it makes the thyroid actually get bigger so there are many different aspects to what a goiter can do for the thyroid but I'm just going to make you aware of what these goiter foods are specifically all right number one cassava okay cassava is a goitrogenic food number two lima beans number three sorghum okay which is a type of grain number four sweet potato number five flaxseed number six cruciferous vegetables and that would include broccoli kale brussels sprouts cabbage radish Watercress bok choy cauliflower horseradish and arugula but you do want to avoid consuming a lot of cruciferous but if you're consuming like small amounts like less than five ounces you're not going to have a problem okay I'm talking about large amounts and even if you do have cruciferous if you cook them or steam them or ferment them as in sauerkraut you're going to reduce the amount of this effect and also if you have a little c-calp that will also help as well I mean if you look at the research you would have to consume a good amount of this over a period of time to create a goiter I'm just bringing up all the foods because you may be consuming a lot of these Foods maybe not individually in large amounts but across the board another one is a grain called Millet the next big one is soy tofu soy milk especially soy protein isolates any soy now the next one might surprise you but onions are the food that have the most quercetin and quercetin can give you a goitrogenic effect so if you have a goiter you probably should be careful about consuming too many onions now this last thing I'm going to talk about isn't classically you know considered a uh goitrogen but it definitely destroys the thyroid especially the autoimmune thyroid Hashimoto's in fact ninety percent of all hypothyroid cases are Hashimoto's and the biggest culprit is this gluten okay in grains a lot of different grains so gluten is something you have to avoid now the question is why this is related to an area called molecular mimicry if you have antibodies to gluten which a lot of people do those antibodies can cross over and start to attack the thyroid because of this molecular similarity now when dealing with the thyroid you would also want to avoid anything that depletes selenium iodine iron and vitamin A these are key nutrients that you want sufficient amounts so to get enough iodine and selenium that would be all the seafood that would be also the sea cow Brazil nuts and also you can get both of these if you do sea salt of course iron is pretty easy to get if you're doing like red meat or animal products and vitamin A you can get that from egg yolks butter cod liver oil beef liver things like that now that I talked about what foods to avoid let's talk about what you should eat and for that check this video out

Can people with goiter eat soybeans?
Well that's good I don't eat any of these
When I was 16 years old I had a big lump in my throat, I had my goiter removed.
And on levothyroxine.
And I have hypothyroidism
Why no sweet potato and millet?
Very interesting thank you. However, what about some medicines im taking for various health issues since the last many years (am 60 years now) ; how would they affect the thyroid (have been diagnosed now with borderline hypothyroid and slight nodule/throat swelling) ? And the diet im already following for previous/ongoing health issues ? For example, i am a diabetic on metformin and also have blood pressure and cardiac issues , taking beta-blockers and statins and daily aspirin . I also have occasional anxiety /stress and have to take a nightly tablet for that. Im already not allowed to eat many things and i feel there are very few dietary options left . I am completely at a loss now . Can you please guide me how to proceed ? My local GP doesnt even seem to understand these concerns . He just goes by the medical textbook . I really need urgent, practical help and solutions . Thanks
Hello Dr. If I am on HRT, will this be a problem for the thyroid. Also what can I take to stop the symtoms of menopause and protect my spine heart and brain? I think these things are made of soy or wild yams I have issues since I have been taking them dry skin, pain in my joints.
Guys flax seeds are fine for hypothyroidism. Flaxseed contains small amounts of synogens which can cause a goiter if the seeds are raw and it also absorbs iodine. Based on scientific research, this can be resolved by roasting your flaxseeds. Hope this helps.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr Berg!!! I got my husband listening to this. He listens to you but wont listen to me. 😆😆.
So what can one eat then? Its limited?
I had my thyroid removed, what can I eat?
I'm convinced that food in general is bad. Just stop eating, and you will get all better.
Other doctor said eat broccoli does any of these even have a clue
If you take np thyroid meds do you still have to avoid these.
Wow…I have a mild symptom on my thyroid and these are the foods I eat every week. Hmm… how to strike a balance ?😅 Feels like darn you do and darn you don't?? 😮😅😊
I'm not giving up eggs…love eggs
I suffered graves disease for a few years…however changed my diet and had less stress and blood tests showed normal so I don't suffer it any more….I think stress was the biggest culprit.
So just eat nothing
Wait. Don't supplement with Quercetin?
Sorgum doesn't have glutens, so why should it be avoided?
What is the best way to consume brazil nuts ? By soaking or not and how many to have per day? Please enlighten us!🙏🏻
Do we need to take brazil nuts in subclinical hypothyroidism or not ?
What about teas? white green black?
My gosh. How I'm going to fix my problems if I cannot consume any type of seafood, any type of meat or sea vegetables, due to having mast cell activation syndrome (mcas) in the gut? 😔
Thank you for the video, Dr. Berb! 🙏
what about if dr did a iodine radiation ? and i am taking synthorid
Why sweet potato
What is about greentea
The secret is meat, my friends. Just eat meat! 🍖 🥓 🥩 🐔 🍗 🐓 🍳 🥚 🐟 🐠 🎣 🐖 🐷 🐗 😊
I eat veggies because it's better. Can't eat beans. Can't eat rice. Wtf can I eat? All of these I love. Can't even drink water because the bottles have plastic in it.
Please help, so I have hahimotos and it’s suggested not to eat these foods yet I also have endometriosis and told I should eat cruciferous vegetables and sweet potatoes so what to do?
My cause behind Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is animal fats. Saturated fats. My body creates TPO antibodies against my thyroid.
I think you need to make an updated Hypothroidism video. There are some contridictions. One video you said to eat broccoli and cabbage for selenium but this one you said not to. Then Do iodine, don't do iodine…
If I drink a green powder that has a lot of these "goitrogens" in them, would that count as not good? Especially if I drink it right before going to bed
How much sea kelp?
I have been taking DIM 200mg per day for 2 months, my random thyroid test last week shows 5.4 which should be considered as hypothyroidism, I am 27 years old, have no history or symptoms of Thyroid issues, could it be the DIM that has made it go above the normal level?
Egads gave my pup quercetin for his mast cell tumors but he is hypothyroid. Add quercetin to the list of what to avoid though it isn’t a food.
But cabbage is on your list for selenium high foods in another video about hypothriodism.
Can i drink 1 cup coffee?
Ty Dr. Berg for being a health promoter. I have complex Thyroid Nodules 😮💨 but despite many blood tests & ultrasound scans no Dr has told me if I have HypErthyroidism. I am medically Anorexic! ( (the older I get the harder it is to gain weight), am Nervous/Anxious/Depressed 247! , Chronic Insomnia, chronic hair loss, Chronic Sensitive to cold. As some of the symptoms of Hyper & hypothyroidism ovrlap I'm Confused; Does it sound like I have HypErthyroidism?*** I've viewed videos of Dr's saying to avoid Cruciferous vegetables if youre Hyper w/Thyroid Nodules* so I have been on an Anti-cruciferous diet & Anti-gluten diet since 2018 but Idk if its Shrunk my Nodules any***. It sounds like Cruciferous veg if more than 5 0z is risky for Hyperthyroidism as well as hypothyroidism. Do u have a video on foods to avoid if you have HypErthyroidism? Ty
I was given Iodine by mistake by my General Practitioner instead I have Hiper not Hipo , for 6 weeks I vomited daily , didn’t eat much living on bananas , boiled rice as my flora is not there Dr , will I ever get healed Dr ? 👀❤️♥️💓
About kelp, an addendum: if one is on levothyroxine meds, it's officially recommended to avoid kelp because of the iodine content.
