welcome to health alert i'm dr alan mandel chiropractic physician today's topic is preventing osteoporosis osteoporosis is a loss of bone mass it's a common part of the aging process that may affect as many as 40 percent of all women over the age of 65. as osteoporosis progresses bones become thin and weak making them increasingly susceptible to fracture fortunately by making sure you get adequate amounts of calcium and by doing regular weight-bearing exercises throughout life you can strengthen your bones and even prevent loss of bone mass as you age calcium is a mineral found in highest concentration in human body and with phosphorus it's important in forming bone tissue ninety percent of the calcium in the body is in the bones before menopause women need approximately 800 to 1000 milligrams of calcium per day that's the amount of food in about four to five glasses of milk after menopause women may need as much as 1200 milligrams of calcium per day excellent sources of calcium are dairy products broccoli tofu and canned salmon with bones if you cannot tolerate dairy products your physician can recommend a supplement to ensure adequate calcium intake in order to absorb calcium the body also requires vitamin d which is found in milk multivitamin pills or from 30 to 60 minutes of sunshine a day one of the best ways in preventing osteoporosis is weight bearing exercise that's correct like walking or running or anything that requires weight bearing are you a risk of having osteoporosis do you have a family history of osteoporosis are you thin petite build early menopause before 45 never been pregnant avoided dairy products as a child are you a smoker do you drink alcohol every day a diet high in salt caffeine or fat you really exercise caucasian have you lost height in the past few years today's the day to make the changes eat well exercise do the right things it's all about prevention thanks again for listening with me here on health alert i'm dr alan mandel
