What does a Breast Cancer lump feel like? How to Identify Them with Dr Tasha

What does a lump in your breast feel like and how do you check for lumps?

In today's video I am discussing self-examination, and explaining what a lump actually feels like, so you know what to look for when you are examining yourself.

Early detection through self-examination plays a crucial role in improving survival rates. Self-examination involves carefully palpating the breasts to detect any unusual lumps, changes in texture, or skin abnormalities.

Regular self-exams empower you to become familiar with their breast tissue, enabling them to recognize deviations from the norm promptly.

While self-exams are not a substitute for professional screenings, they serve as a valuable proactive measure, facilitating early detection and timely medical intervention.

Hi, I'm Dr Tasha

I’m a Doctor, Breast Cancer Surgeon, and Medical Educator. After 20 years of helping people understand and overcome breast health problems, I’ve seen firsthand the fear, frustration, and stress that my patients go through.

As a breast specialist with over a decade’s worth of experience, I understand finding the right information, processing a diagnosis, understanding treatment, and getting accurate, practical advice as you ride the rollercoaster of emotions can be really tough.

you are examining your breast and you have felt something you are not sure whether this is a lump or just normal breast issue you are worried and concerned andure as to what you are feeling you continue to examine your breast again and again until it hurts you are losing sleep and your mind is spling out of control what is it that you are feeling if you want to know what a breast lump actually feels like then stay tuned to find out hi my name is Dr Tasha and I'm a breast surgeon here to help you navigate the world of Health in general and breast cancer specifically now breast examination is something that for some reason is not taught at all no wonder many of us are worried that we don't know where to start and what to look out for and if you have never felt a breast lamp before you will have no idea what it feels like and actually even if you have felt a breast lump sometimes you may still feel unsure firstly it is important to know how to do a breast examination the correct way now if you have not done one before and you don't know what to do and how to do it then check out this video all about how to do it the correct way once you have mastered this then examining your breast is going to be so much easier you'll be more confident about doing it and you'll know what you're looking out for broadly speaking the breast is made up of glandular and fatty tissue and these two components are responsible for how the breast feels when you are younger the glandular aspect of the breast predominates and that is why young women's breasts generally are more firm and denser feeling as we get older the fatty aspect of the breast becomes more dominant and as a result the breast will feel softer and with time become you know more droopy knowing these differences is important because it will help you determine what a lump may feel like it is really vital that you examine your breast with the flat of your fingers don't pinch the breast or prod the breast examine the breast first with a light touch and then press a little bit deeper but don't press so hard that you are hurting yourself if you are hurting yourself then you are examining your breast way too hard now the question I get out all the time is I don't know what a lump feels like well a lump really does feel like a lump within the breast there's no mystery to it imagine a small pee a marble or a broad Bean Underneath Your Clothes or jumper that is what a l will feel like now when you are feeling the lump you may feel that it is smooth and soft and has well defined edges meaning that you can actually Define the top and the size of the lump sometimes the lump may feel a little bit less discrete and more vague you may be able to feel the top of the lump but not able to fill the edges so well the lump may also feel firmer rather than soft now of course the take on message is always that if you find something that doesn't feel quite right and you are worried about it then do get it checked out the doctor will then reexamine you and confirm whether what you are feeling is something that needs further investigation so how do you know whether something is new or different the best way to answer this is by knowing what your normal breast feels like and the best way to get familiar is by doing regular examinations do it once a month after your period if you are premenopausal and if you are postmenopausal you can do it at a regular and similar time once a month so let me know if you examine your breast regularly and whether this video was helpful I'll see you in the next one
