foreign certified dermatologist here in Seattle thank you for your support thank you for subscribing to the channel today's video Is Not Just For Men but for everyone but I started the channel three years ago during the start of the lockdowns of kovid and the pandemic and I really wanted to spread good information good skin care Dermatology information education for the world but not medical advice I did want to though increase men skin care awareness I wanted guys to jump in to the skincare game I wanted all of you the audience to see a male a dermatologist put on skin care on the face and so it's been really great to meet other people like out in the public one in particular shout out to the cashier at Dick's Sporting Goods who recognized me and said hey I watch your tick tocks and YouTubes and because of you I'm on a vitamin C serum by La Roche Jose and also I believe he picked up olay's vitamin C as well big muscular guy and lots of facial hair didn't think he would be putting on a vitamin C serum but now we just don't know because we are normalizing skin care and so it's really nice to see guys get into it patients are also more receptive to my male patients A lot of times those only my female patients talking about moisturizer sunscreens retinoids and now I have males coming in for all types of things from chemical peels to Botox or we call Botox this video is also dedicated to my brother who asked for this topic and he's jumped into the skincare game always easy for me to think of presents now for family members and loved ones and friends because the best gifts for Christmas or birthdays would be skin care so let's jump into a skincare routine for guys but as you may know there's no real big difference between men and women but we'll go over some subtle differences let's say all right so let's jump into it so I want to generalize too much but in general men tend to have a little bit more oily skin we have more of a tendency to have sebaceous glands be sebaceous heavy on her face our body we get a lot of body acne as well on the face not just through puberty but also in adulthood after a workout not to say that men can have dry skin but we definitely have a lot of oily skin when we go through puberty a lot of that testosterone will cause more of that body and facial acne and so I'm going to focus more on like oily skin types or combination skin which I have combination skin meaning my forehead nose chin are oily and I have dry cheeks so you have a little bit of both the way to tell your skin type is after you cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser wait 30 minutes and if you feel dry then you probably have dry skin if you're oily all over then you have oily skin combination like we mentioned the T-Zone being oily dry cheeks and normal being just everything seems pretty much in Balance you don't really feel dry or oily so you guys know I like La Roche posay's tularean purifying foaming cleanser this is great for combination skin or if you have oily skin I like foaming cleansers to help pick up excess sebum another good one good one for oily skin or combination skin will be CeraVe hydrating cream to foam cleanser I talk about this one quite a bit it has amino acid technology plus it has the hyaluronic acid ceramides going back to Jose this one has niacinamide which we all like vitamin B3 because it helps regulate sebum production so I like niacinamide in my skincare products so great way to start off the morning if you have really oily skin in the summertime you can consider the foaming cleanser by um CeraVe that one's also a great one for oily skin another one that you could consider would be I don't have it here but the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cleanser is also a nice one you can consider if you have that little bit of oily skin because a gel cleanser or a foaming cleanser are both nice formulations for you to cleanse with if you have combination to oily skin let's jump into shaving really quick shaving in the morning use warm water to wash your face either with the La Rose Jose or CeraVe use warm water to cleanse your face get your hair follicles ready for the Shaving process use a clean blade of course and go and shave with the growth of hair not against the grain so you don't get ingrown hairs so you can get this really bad razor burn called pseudofliculitis Barbe if you don't do it correctly and after you're done with the Shaving process rinse your face with cool water now if you want to use shaving gel or shaving cream there are tons out there some have irritated my skin severely the one that has never irritated my skin or my patients is aveeno's therapeutic shave gel this one is so good so I give this to all my family members and friends as gifts I throw this in the bag because this is so essential this is such a great shaving gel and it's just soothing never hurts the skin never stings the skin never irritates my skin no added fragrance and so women can also use this too for shaving consider Aveeno when you shave guys that one's my little tip there after you cleanse your face you're going to go from thinnest to thickest and next will be the serum vitamin C we like vitamin C a lot because it helps brighten the skin it helps with fine lines and wrinkles potentially if the vitamin C isn't too unstable it can potentially work on the second layer of skin but primarily works on the epidermis and brightening the skin helping with hyperpigmentation which I deal with especially after acne get a little acne blemish afterwards that can last for months we all know about that if you are skin of color especially especially and so vitamin C serums I know guys don't like to have droppers where you gotta take out a dropper drop in your hand patting your face put it back I'm gonna say let's go for convenient efficient skin care today vitamin C that comes in a pump let's start off with an affordable option notorium vitamin C so this is at Target 20 something bucks it used to be 20 bucks but I know the prices for everything has gone up quite a bit comes out of a pump I love the texture of this just put a little bit on just great so you can do two strategies just do a little pump in your fingertips break it up put on your entire face with your fingertips or you can place on the back of your hand and then make little dabs on your face after that just rub the rest into the back of your hand to treat the back of your hand guys because we don't want to neglect our neck and back of the hands you can treat your neck as well with the vitamin C but going back to back of the hands this shows your age quite a bit we don't want to have dark spots and wrinkles and such so next would be peels vitamin C this is 12.5 vitamin C and hyaluronic acid this one's interesting because it's like a moisturizer and a vitamin C together I'm going to show you the texture of it real quick and this is a pump of course so it's nice and convenient but look at that it looks like just like a moisturizer so if you want a vitamin C serum with a moisturizer check this one out it is a higher price point but hard to go wrong with kiehls Kiehl's had an amazing lineup of products from acne to anti-aging they're moisturizer gain they're Ultra facial moisturizing cream with glacial glycoprotein the squalene is just one of my favorite moisturizers of all time now if you want to go for a very high price point I'm not going to say skinceutical c for like for you guys because it isn't a dropper bottle but I will talk about another favorite brand of mine skin better science now the alto has 19 antioxidants vitamin C vitamin E coenzyme Q10 acai cocoa green tea blend of coffee anti-pollution complex licorice extract linoleic and lenolenic acid ceramide blend so you have a lot of goodies in here you know usually I say don't go crazy with your ingredient list or multiple products but it just works really well and this is the same price point as Skin suitable see for like as backed by science I have Dermatology colleagues that do the clinical trials for this brand it's an impressive one so now this is available online I'll have the link down below but Alto very nice textures and a pump just a Twist top pump and then very lightweight look at that I don't want that to go to waste it's good stuff here vitamin C vitamin E synergistic antioxidants they work well together in brightening your skin that is your vitamin C game next you can consider a moisturizer if you're very dry this summer you might want to just skip the moisturizer step and go into the most important part of your routine is where I sunscreen at the end and I'm going to go over some moisturizers with SPF just to combine things because again this video is about efficient skin care right so let's jump into it starting with the very affordable option CeraVe am facial moisturizing lotion this one's a nice OG one a lot of my patients are on it and they are on prescription medications especially the my acne patients who are using drying acne medications they do well with the CeraVe am and the CeraVe PM so the am has sunscreen the p.m doesn't this one has niacinamide the ceramide blend and hyaluronic acid so very great and lightweight to layer over your other skin care products you can see how lightweight that is very good you got the moisturizer with SPF this one is SPF 30 and it has zinc oxide with chemical UV filters so it's a hybrid sunscreen here all right next you can consider LaRoche posay's tolarian double repair moisturizer UV with SPF 30 and it has its Prebiotic thermal water which is a special thing about La Rochelle the thermal water is from France in the town of La Roche Jose this one also has niacinamide ceramide and this has four chemical UV filters very lightweight I'll show you that looks nice A little bit of that do we finish there nice so that's another option for you that's like I said SPF 30. now none of these mention that they're water resistant so just keep that in mind that if you are going to go for a workout go for a water resistant sunscreen oh I don't have the l10d UV Shear out but that's another nice moisturizing sunscreen that has a nice finish it's a hybrid sunscreen with zinc oxide and octocrylene but that one is a nice sunscreen Everyday Use but also with water resistance next would be exuviance this is a nice brand this sunscreen is moisturizing with SPF 35 and so this is a chemical UV filter based sunscreen with resource and all has antioxidants like turmeric and this is a very nice moisturizing sunscreen helps with repair let's go into sunscreen reapplication which is very important now I know for guys I know we tend to lose hair and I wanted to start before going to reapplication we may have more hair facial hair we're dealing with more body hair and also a loss of hair that's male pattern alopecia or androgenetic alopecia where we start to lose hair at the top and we have a receding hairline especially at the temporal Peaks there sprays are very popular amongst my male patients sprays though had rough go in the last couple years after Valley sure came out with that study and found that there were some sunscreens with contaminants in them specifically Benzene even in small amounts we don't want Benzene in it because the carcinogen and can lead to hematologic cancers now that's where people jumped on and said hey oh we told you the sunscreens are bad for you you shouldn't be using them they could be cancer no they do not give you cancer the contaminants in them through the manufacturing process those should not have been in there and unfortunately they were and so a lot of the sunscreens that were dinged were actually aerosolized sprays so like even out to MD they're UV Arrow which was so popular amongst my patients was on that list I believe and so they pulled that from the shelf and they now have the Alx UV aox Mist which is really nice but just to let you know that not all products are on this list is they can't just generalize and say all sunscreen is bad go through that list by Valley Shore and see if you want to do a spray make sure their spray is not on the list but there are some really nice Brands out there with nice sprays that you could do for hair bearing areas if you're a golfer you want to just quickly spray yourself before starting your around or at the turn the turn mean after nine holes after two hours you want to reapply I do encourage any form of sunscreen use that is most convenient and possible for you guys but for reapplication I like to talk about sticks sticks are really nice so this is is intrigued this is a nice portable small stick here that doesn't give you a white cast when you apply this this is just like invisible I like reapplication with sticks the other one is MD solar Sciences solar stick the Alta MD UV stick those are all great options Neutrogena makes a good one too that's water resistant if they have the White Castle I don't mind because it actually tells me where I missed the spot I say about four to five passes over an area is sufficient so real reapplication is important after two hours all right let's jump into the PM skincare routine all right you just finished your game of pickup basketball you went to the pool you worked out you went for a run now what do we do after all that or after just going to Clinic like myself and seeing 30 patients you want to wash your face with something really good that will go down in the pores and clean it out those two ingredients that come to mind would be salicylic acid or use benzoyl peroxide don't use the don't use two together use one or the other and I alternate it by the day one you can consider salicylic acid CeraVe essay cleanser with vitamin D salicylic acid also has ceramides of course so this is a nice cleanser but the newer one that came out would be a very oily skin is their acne control cleanser with hectorite clay and niacinamide so the hectorite clay will help absorb the excess sebum and oil on your face and wash it all away so this is a two percent salicylic acid cleanser the other nice one by um La Roche Jose is their medicated Gel Cleanser this one's also two percent salicylic acid and this has lha which you see in their very viral Alpha Clark dual which is that spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide the lha is a micro exfoliant so it helps with gently exfoliating the skin with the salicylic acid so this is a really nice one that doesn't irritate my skin the other nice one that comes to mind would be cosrx cell alsoic acid if you're into K Beauty I've been really uh impressed by this gentle one this one's only 0.5 percent salicylic acid and very very gentle so you can use these for your body too in the shower so I like to have some on the sink some in the shower and I can wash my face my body especially if you worked out you want to wash your body to prevent body acne the other ingredient I mentioned is benzoyl peroxide benzoyl peroxide this one looks very similar the color scheme to the salicylic acid cleanser but you can see this is acne foaming cream cleanser this has niacinamide hyaluronic acid and the four percent benzoyl peroxide benzoyl peroxide is antimicrobial so it kills the bacteria that causes acne and it works really well with your acne medications especially if they have antibiotics so it helps prevent your body from getting resistant to those antibiotics so I I like benzoyl peroxide a lot it also has exfoliative benefits as well the big thing though you can wash their face and body with it but make sure you cleanse off all of the benzoyl peroxide because if you have a little bit on your skin when you go and get your towel over it or you put your clothes on you can bleach everything it comes into contact with your pillowcase your Linens so please wash it off well or just have everything very white but I've heard people even with their white towels they've somehow discolored them too now after you're done with your shower wash your face and body let everything dry and then going on to the fun part of retinoid retinoids are great it's a vitamin a derivative you can find it over the counter as a retinol retinol or retinaldehyde or you can see a dermatologist and we prescribe retinoic acid or tretinoin and their other prescription retinoids like adaptolene 0.3 percent to zaratine tripheritine but that's all like acne discussions with your dermatologist for a pure anti-aging purposes you can consider a Retinol for brightening your skin helping with fine lines and wrinkles keeping your pores clean and so they look small and they don't enlarge with time so they don't get clogged up and enlarged so this is a really fun topic for me but instead of using like a jar where you gotta dip your finger in like Olay or Neutrogena which are both great retinols I'm going to go over stuff that are pumps and again let's talk about CeraVe a very affordable option I've done a video on this one versus the purple I like the resurfacing Retinol Serum a lot that says licorice root extract as well as niacinamide and niacinamide is a jack of all trades that works on sebum but also helps brighten the skin the licorice root extract in this is good if you have hyperpigmentation because that also works on decreasing melanin production it helps with brightening your skin so this is a nice lightweight serum you can put a little bit of pea size amounts all you need whether use a prescription retinoid like the stuff like tretinoin I would prescribe or an over-the-counter so I'm just putting a small like half pea sizing on my face here and yes you can layer this with your vitamin C but I usually like to break up vitamin C in the morning and doing your retinoid at night the rest I'm just going to rub into the back of my hand so that one is I don't know 20 25 bucks for that for one fluid ounce which seems pretty standard it is encapsulated so technically maybe it is photo stable but I always say just in case use your retinoids at bedtime on dry skin you don't want it to be on damp skin because it will absorb too much and cause irritation another good one going up in price point Keels retinol micro dose this is really good if you have very sensitive skin rosacea and you're not sure if you can tolerate a retinol or if you're a beginner it has a very small percentage of retinol but also has a peptide to help with anti-aging purposes it helps with self-signaling and increasing collagen production but one pump gives you that pea size amount all you need there I'm gonna apply just a small amount here don't forget your nose because you want to clean out all the pores on your nose or keep them clean and then the rest will just rub on the back of my hand don't waste that it's good stuff next would be Rock here not as expensive as Keels but I've been using Rock the longest this is the first retinol I've ever tried as a Dermatology resident at Harvard a nice convenient pump as well all about this is a little smaller pea size them off so you might want to pump a little bit more but that one's a nice lightweight one the one in the tube is pretty heavily fragrant the one in the jar has no fragrance this one has a little bit of a scent to it very nice rock is just reliable a lot of my patients use it and I like the capsules for traveling if you're a guy and you're willing to open up a capsule and squirt on your hand get on your face and your neck it's all dose appropriately for your face and neck very convenient retinol capsule and then you throw away the capsules they're biodegradable and so it's pretty simple so if you don't mind using the capsule try those out guys now going on to skin better science they make a nice retinoid I talked before on the channel the alpha red so we have the Intensive and the non-intensive alpha alpharett is a double conjugated retinoid with lactic acid molecules attached to it and it has exfoliative properties from the lactic acid and also glycolic acid and it also has a retinoid in a in a trial a split face trial they found that the tretino 1.025 and the alpha red were comparable and couldn't say that one was inferior to the other which is pretty neat and so I even recommending alpharet for a while and I've used it for myself for over five years now and I think it's a great retinoid it's been so good it's helped change my skin and so the Intensive is if you're not a beginner start off with the non-intensive if you're starting off always start off with your retinoid about twice a week and then increase to Nightly as tolerated some people can only do it every other night otherwise they'll get super dry that's totally fine but this one has niacinamide and a whole bunch of other goodies in it as well we have a peptide blend which we like peptides because of the cell signaling capabilities it has squalane the niacinamide ceramides fatty acids metabolol which is soothing and you have vitamin c and e lots of goodies in there so you got your antioxidants in it so Tom what efficient skin care this embodies that okay now next after that you want to use a moisturizer after your your retinoid and when you're first starting off you might want to do a retinol sandwich and put a layer of moisturizer your retinol and then your another layer of moisturizer to start off in the first three to four weeks after that when you got a good routine going moisturize after your retinol and so you can consider cerave's PM lotion which we said had niacinamide hyaluronic acid but no sunscreen you can totally use this in the morning as your daily moisturizer and then put your sunscreen over that or just use it at night after your retinol and this works really well with a lot of actives vitamin C your exfoliant your retinols okay other one that you can consider would be La Roche posay's talarian double repair this one's their matte moisturizer and is good for those with combination to oily skin and I'll show you the texture of this one very lightweight has niacinamide and ceramide just a couple swipes and it disappears supposed to leave you with a matte finish so I like that moisturizer a lot if you have the oilier skin types and then of course if you want to do a real fancy see you know you could do Kiehl's Ultra facial cream like I mentioned and then the other one I wanted to bring up was the solo hydrating defense for men and that's by skin better science and this has really nice benefits so let me just show you the texture of this one here this is all higher price points so not gonna waste this guy either I'm gonna put this right over this one is an award winner by Men's Health editor's Choice in 2020 and 2021. this has hyaluronic acid ceramide blend lenolic and lenolenic acid salicylic acid sabalol sea whip extract which also soothes the skin with the sabalol and it has vitamin C vitamin E coenzyme Q10 coffee licorice root extract so a lot of things going on in there to help with brighten your skin again talking about efficient skin care if you're thinking whoa that's a lot going on with the alpha rep they work well together you can totally layer your alphabet and then put your hydrating defense men right over it okay I'm going to be doing an I don’t doubt that the SkinBetter science stuff is good stuff, but you don’t need $135 /30ml product, the cheaper CeraVe, Olay, and Roc products are just a good but that’s my opinion.

Would you recommend using the Blemish Control Cleanser in the morning and in the evening? I have acne prone combination skin and I wanna make sure i'm not over exfoliating my skin, as I have started using retinol recently. Would it be better to use the Cream-to-Foam cleanser in the morning and the Blemish Control at night, especially as I shave in the evening?
