Air conditioning in an ordinary British house?! 4K HEAT PUMP
My experience installing air conditioning in every room of a three-bedroomed semi-detached house in the UK. And since it’s winter, let’s call it a heat pump and see if it can keep me warm for less.

can you fully air condition an ordinary three-bedroom semi-detached house in England I didn’t think it would be practical surely there would be big air ducts to route and the entire house would have to be torn apart to do it but my American friends who also have the opinion that a lack of air conditioning was somewhat uncivilized told me I should investigate mini split air conditioning systems a mini split system has a condenser or compressor unit outside and an interior unit inside the two are connected by a thin set of copper pipes and electrical power and signaling cables a single exterior unit can connect to several interior units and different types of interior units are available including wall and floor mounted ones so to get AC into a room all you need is a place for the interior unit a place outside for the exterior unit and a route for some pipes to connect the two [Music] I hired sub cool FM to do my installation first they send around a designer to look at the house ask you what you want and figure out where everything can go and they give you a quote if you decide to go ahead they order the equipment and schedule the installation my installation took five days for each unit they first put on the wall brackets then they drill holes through the exterior wall for the pipes and cables [Music] [Applause] [Music] they braise pipes to the interior units so there are no chances of leaks inside [Music] the interior units are mounted on pipes are fed through the holes to the outside foreign [Music] pipes are routed to the exterior units [Music] the pipes are quite bendable [Music] [Music] and can negotiate all sorts of obstacles including flat roofs everything is hidden inside trunking where appropriate both inside and outside [Music] pressurization tests make sure there are no leaks foreign [Music] vapor is removed from the pipes [Music] before they are filled with refrigerant finally the external units are wired into a ring Mains via the back of a socket these units only draw a maximum of 1500 watts so there will be plenty of capacity for them on most normal ring Mains the interior units take their power from the external ones and those wires just take the same route as the refrigerant pipes the interior units can be controlled with an infrared remote control they tell the exterior units what to do system can be controlled by Wi-Fi with an app I’ve even got it working through a home assistant integration which can even monitor the power usage [Music] [Music] you might wonder why I’m posting about air conditioning at the start of winter but these units can also be used for heating because they are heat pumps they’re very efficient and for heating one room during the day when I’m working from home I think it might turn out to be cheaper than running with gas Central Heating and I need to run more tests before reaching any conclusions I’m very happy with the installation many thanks to the guys from subcool FM who are impeccable house guests made no mess and were always happy to answer my questions and keep me informed about what they were doing and put up with me filming them I might do future videos going into more detail but for now I can say that my five room installation uses about 0.8 kilowatt hour each day just in standby that’s about 30 Watts from each exterior unit but I can warm up my kitchen on a chilly November morning for a couple of hours using on average about 250 Watts whereas my central heating system uses 6000 Watts on full power although it does get things pretty warm in an hour and then the house stays quite warm without much energy use for the rest of the day our experiments are needed that’s all for now

Comfort during hot days but you're stuck constantly with big ugly units on your inside walls and ugly trunking on the outside your house. Im looking for the units that fit flush in the ceiling. No ugly eyesores and no taking up wall space.
Mind me asking location of your indoor units?
I want to do something similar for my 3 bed house, with conservatory. How have you installed so that it could cool your whole house?
External brick blown out when drilling. My personal pet peeve.
Why would you need AC in the UK?
What state was the copper pipes in after being forced through that unlined hole in the wall?
Can we get an update a year on please?
So it's exactly as you thought: you still have hideous white PVC pipes everywhere, just slightly smaller than in your first thoughts.
That's one ugly install. Bet all that exterior insulation is shredded by now. As for the electrical… 😖
Great video. I've a similar house and I'm thinking about a similar installation.
Looks like a pretty low quality install, but you get what you pay for I guess!
I prefer an install with a compressor in the loft and just ducked into each room, no trunking around interior or exterior of the house that way.
What a fucking bodge that install is 😂😂 not even a dedicated circuit from the fuse board
Any chance of an update?
Wiring up an AC to the mains plugs…. Yeah I would have spent a bit more money and put them in a separate circuit. You'd be saving yourself some big headaches troubleshooting any electrical faults in the future.
I imagined Adrian Newey would live in a bigger house and already have his AC installed.
What size Kw are the outside units? And how many do you have? Cheers
The real question is how much would my electric bill be in July?
Any update on this? How’s it going? How cost effective is it? Any suggestions / changes you would make if you were to do us again?
Installers licence plate is illegal!!
What's SU5 4OOL when on DVLA it should be SU54 OOL.
I'll report it with the other 'entitled' illegal plates obtained without ID, proof of ownership and with BSA markings.
I want to move to England one day, but not without AC! I am too used to it at this point. 😅
Hi, did you end up testing whether your boiler or AC was more efficient for warming up the house? Cheers
Hi mate, great vid. I'm definitely finding the AC much cheaper to heat my main room rather than the CH radiator.
@RobFisherUK – Thank you for this video!
Have you noticed a significant increase on your energy bill? If you were to put a number associate and use on your aircon, what would it be?
