The Science Behind How Acupuncture Helps Relieve Pain: A Doctor Of Chinese Medicine Explains
We asked Dr. Daniel Hsu, a NY-based doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, to explain how acupuncture works.
I mean, everybody generally knows what acupuncture is but ya know, I picture like the Hell Raiser guy. (laugher)
Yeah! Me too! A bunch of needles coming out of his face. So, what is the theory behind acupuncture? Okay, so real quick, acupuncture, I'm gonna talk to the doctors out there, okay, acupuncture works in two major ways, one endogenous opiate release, and two down modulation of sympathetic up regulation. Did you get all that? Can you dumb that down? Now, in human speak, that means it makes the body release its own naturally occurring pain killers and naturally occurring feel-good chemicals and it also helps to relax the nervous system. It calms that fight or flight response, you know? That kind of tightens everything up in the body and it loosens it all up for you. And that's why in dogs… It improves circulation and healing and it helps with pain and healing. But as many many levels of care being delivered through tiny little needles. Exactly.
And you told us earlier… And all the acupuncture points are in areas where there are a lot of nerves, a lot of mass cells, which are for the immune system, and also for the lymphatic system, so when you do acupuncture you're improving circulation. Can you perform, with accuracy, acupuncture on yourself? Is it easy to do on yourself? You can, yeah, absolutely. So we're going to do one on a major point. And so these acupuncture points have a lot of, channels, have a lot of lines in them, right? Right. Imagine these lines like train lines or bus lines and there are stops along that line and those stops where you can access a line are the acupuncture points. On the hand.. Like us subway New Yorkers. Or trains, if you're not a New Yorker. Yeah, so there's a lot of lines, so there are a lot of points in the hand, but there's some major major points in the hand, like major train stations, Grand Central, Union Square, New York if you're a New Yorker, but major train stations, major points. There's one major point that's right here. Hey look, NYC! There's a major point right here. You would think that I don't mind needles, I actually hate needles. Yeah, sure you do. And there's one major point that is, I think you got over it Bob, you're tattooed from head to toe, come on.
(laughter) So the major point in the hand is good for headaches, its good for pain all over the body, it's also good for toothaches. And there's a point on the back of the hand here, on the side of the hand here, for back pain and knee pain. Wow, this is good for toothaches? Yeah, they used to pull teeth by doing this point. Wow! Who wants to go first? I'm using these little, tiny little needles, they're single use, they're disposable. Alright, alright, it's a one hour show, you're like him! (audience laughter) And there's a needle in you now. How did it feel, did you feel it? That's great, didn't feel a thing! Hold on Bob, I'm gonna use these needles on you. What!
(laughter) Why do I get the big needle? These are six inch needles, we're gonna do this in Bob. Oh my God!
(laughter) I'm just joking. I want to party with Dr. Shu! Alright, let's do a couple more. We're gonna do one here, we're gonna do one here. We're gonna do one here, alright. You don't even feel it comin' it's great. Oh, I felt it.
I didn't. Now, I gotta calm down too. Just for kicks, I'm just gonna do one on myself. Whoa! Do you do parties Shu? Yes, I do.
(laughter) I do bar mitzvahs and birthdays, ya know, there ya go. Is that, you see, I would think that would help with headaches. And what does this do?
Yeah, what does that do? It just calms me down. (laugher) It helps me relax. That's how Shu rolls at home, boop! That's it, I'm walking around with needles all over myself (laughter)
Who wants one? How many needles do you put in a person at one time? So, in a real treatment you'd put, you'd have an acupuncture list of needles you put in and it could be, you know, one two three ten twenty, it depends. (audience cheering) (audience cheering) (audience cheering)

With all the giggling and laughing this is no joke people. I had years of severe neck pain and neck stiffness that was cured through only 3 sessions of acupuncture. This of course was after all sorts of medications such as Meloxicam, steroid shots, muscle relaxers and opiates. I've had MRI's, xrays you name it not to mention thousands in medical bills. Nothing that modern medicine did helped me at all. If you are on the fence with acupuncture, just do it and you don't even need to thank me later.

I had like 60 days of acupuncture and i didnt notice anything but then taxi driver who sits outside my apartment rolled his window n said: HEY YOU DONT LIMP ANYMORE with a big smile on his face. I have other pain issues and maybe thats why i didnt notice my walking has improved.
